Critically Appreciate character of Jagan in the novel “The Vendor of Sweet”.
Introduction:-
Jagan is the central figure of the novel “The Vendor of Sweet” by R.K.Narayan. He has his sweet shop in the market Road, and he is running his business very nicely. He is nearly fifty –five year old. He is depicted as a typical south Indian sweet vendor. His appearance is slight and elfish. He has brown, translucent skin. Everyday he spun for on hour.

1. His daily routine:- Jagan is quite successful in his business He earns nearly one thousand rupees a day from his sweet shop. He has four cooks, one counter boy and a watchman as his staff. He has his throne at a central place in the shop. He could see the four cooks working in the kitchen and the boy at the counts from his throne. He used to read “Bhagvad Gita” there. Since early morning to 7:3o. His shop ran successfully it was his routine. The reason of His success was that he never allowed any compromise. He always used pure “Ghee” for making sweets. At six o’clock the counter boy used to bring the bronze jug filled with cash to him. At seven the boy had to bring another installment in a smaller container at seven. He made an entry in a small note book and then more elaborates entries in his account book. As the day got over, He used to look his door and asked the captain if it was all right. He chewed the bitter leaves of neem tree or a month as it destroyed all bacteria in the ryes He used to collect the yellow flowers of neem tree freed them in ghee and used once in a week. He used to cook breakfast for his son, placed it on the table, with five rupee note for his lunch and the other expenses. He was always worried about his son’s eating. All the demands by Mali were satisfied, so he was spoilt. He never understood that he should respect his caring and loving father. He always remained aloof. 5. His love for his wife:- Jagan had married Ambika with typical Hindu customs. After marriage he had her obsession. He passed most of his time with her in their bed room. He had to hear sarcastic remark from his family member on account of that. For ten years they were not blessed with a child. After pilgrimage to the temple of “Santana Krishna at Badri Hill, Mali was born. There was much happiness in their home but it couldn’t last long. Ambika died of Brain tumour.

6. His reaction on Mali’s an Unfavorable Action:- Jagan has very high dreams for his son and his studies. But one day suddenly Mali declared to his father that he didn’t find the study interesting so he could not study more. Through cousin Jagan came to know that Mali wanted to become a writer. Finally Mali decided to go to America as he wanted to learn the art of story writing in America. For Jagan this unbelievable thing. He says. “Did Valmiki go to America or Germany? in order to learn to write his “Ramayana”. But Mali had fixed his passport and other such things. For the fare, he had taken money from his house even without his father’s knowledge; it gave the great shock to his father. His actions always hurt Jagan but Jagan never complained him or never rebuked him for anything Finally Mali paid for the air ticket and went to America leaving his father alone.

7. His Dislike of Mali’s intended Business and Demand of two lakh rupees:- One day he went to Jagan and called Grace by telling that he was discussing business. At that time he came to know that Mali wanted fifty one thousand dollars from him to set up a factory for manufacturing novel writing machines in collaboration with his America associates. Mali explained each and every detail about the story writing machine but For Jagan it was a risky business and fifty one thousand dollars was not small amount. Jagan felt his sweet stall was running quite successfully; if Mali wanted to run it. He had no objection; but giving that amount was not without risk. Mali and Grace insisted a lot but they couldn’t change his decision.

8. The greatest secret of his life;- Mali’s idea of sending grace back to America disturbed Jag a lots. So, when you are in the Philippines, testing your palate with the Filipino street foods, while not necessary, is commendable. Not only would it be fun to try the unique local dishes, but it is a great way to immerse and understand the Filipino culture. It is easy to spot street food vendors; where there are churches, schools, recreational parks, or jeepney terminals, you will also see kiosks, makeshift stalls, or food carts. In suburbs, you will see vendors or hawkers with their bicycles or push carts almost everywhere. Street food is a way of life for many people in this part of the globe. It is a source of income for many Filipino families—some vendors testified that their street food businesses enable them to send their children to school. For students and working adults looking for inexpensive meal, street food satisfy them for just half-the price of a meal in any popular fast-food restaurant. Instead of dining in a restaurant for an authentic Filipino dish, why not go out in the street and have a quick bite. There is nothing more authentic than those food in the streets—untouched with the modern culinary flair. You will not only get to enjoy the food, but you get to join the locals who are eating with much gusto. Let you save couple of...

My Home State Fruit

...happens to be the best in all the country. There is no other like it. Other drupe fruit are taste great, yet none of them live up to the high standards of the Georgia peach. Down in Georgia, where I was born and raised, is where I was first introduced to the infamous Georgia peach. Peaches were grown nearly everywhere in Georgia; in fact, there were a few peach trees in my backyard. If there was not any trees nearby, you could easily buy them in stores or from a vendor on the side of one of the country roads. On hot summer days after my brother and I would play, a peach was always my snack of choice. I would hop off the swing set and jog down the sandy pathway until I came upon the tall, skinny round trunk of the tree. The peaches were a little further up than I could reach; therefore I would stretch on my tip toes and examine branch by branch until I saw the mother load of all peaches. I would feel through the bright luscious leaves until found just the right peach. When I would bite into its firm yet gentle flesh, sweet juices would drip down my face. The country summer breeze mixed with the sugary smell of peach juice created an aroma of pleasure. The peach with its reddish orange color and fuzzy ripe skin is the most succulent fruit to have ever existed. Peaches are used for a number of things. They are mainly consumed where I come from. My grandmother would always make rich syrupy peach cobblers and creamy homemade peach ice cream. The texture of the inside of the peach is...

Hershey Sweet Mission

...Hershey’s Sweet Mission Alia Dodson Dr. Juanita Murrell HR Management Foundations January 27, 2013 Hershey’s sweet mission The redesign of Hershey’s performance management I would fully recommend the redesign of Hershey’s performance management system by appealing to the younger generations. Our world is run by modern technology and fast paced workers. By employing younger workers, Hershey’s will not have to spend a lot of time and money on technology training because the younger workers are eager to learn and ready to take on new challenges. They are enthusiastic about working and jump starting their careers. Young adults will push for results because they will want to reap the benefits of moving forward with their career. The performance management system is a great tool to use because the knowledge is shared between the baby boomers (older generation) and the new millennium (younger generation). This system helps to boost morale between the two types of employees. The older generation is eager to teach the new generation everything they know to make sure all duties are performed. The new millennium workers are also eager and willing to learn and start their career at a well-known company. As part of Hershey’s mission they embrace diversity and want their employee to strive for the best both while at work and socially. It helps boost the employees’ morale throughout the company. In my opinion, the Hershey’s company could improve the quality of life for...
