A theatre is a platform where artist and actors can bring their talents as well as skills to a story, to perform for a live audience. Being able to put on a production is something that requires many different elements. The Welland Canal Play utilizes many different elements that are incorporated in the show. A significant portion of the play includes semiotics attributes, which is the study of symbols and signs and how the audience interprets them. (Taucar, Jacqueline “theatre as a sign system.”) Semiotics components are featured in The Welland Canal Play; specifically, with Patrick and Seymour characters whom Landon Doak and Nicole Joy-Fraser play. The actors of Patrick and Seymour characters demonstrate a connection of friendship, family and being coworkers. …show more content…
They are always by each other’s side throughout the entire play. As the show progresses, their friendship continues to grow. The semiotic element of their friendship is equivalent to a signifier and the signified. This alternatively means that the signifier cannot exist if the physical presence of the signified does not exist. (Taucar) This ultimately ties in with Patrick and Seymour friendship because if one of them did not exist in the production, then the connection of friendship would not be in existence. An example of how strong their friendship progresses throughout the play is when both Patrick and Seymour consistently spend hours and days together due to their jobs working on the Canal.
