The White Picket Fence: Tremonton Valley View Highway should not be one to cause dismay. The country road is a straight drive, but one that has caused people to die. Tremonton makes sure to mourn for the victims of the crash, but not many people seem to care who created all the ash.

Richtel immediately dives into A Deadly Wandering with a nail biting story of James Furfaro and Keith O’Dell’s deaths, and Reggie Shaw and John Kaiserman as survivors. This is a bold literary move, where what would appear to be the climax in most stories is introduced during the second chapter of the book. After starting with such a strong introduction, Richtel must use effective rhetoric to keep the reader’s interest for the rest of the book. Although Richtel displays the picture of the town to be pleasant, he also shows the readers the dark side of Tremonton. Through use of specific diction, Richtel is able to convey information about the town and an ironic statement in one sentence, “There were also dark secrets people didn’t talk much about, along with a gray market of gossip that could spread the ill-informed rumor as fast as any IM or text network.” (Richtel, page 41-42). Here, Richtel states that Tremonton has the tendency to gossip about wrongdoers in the community, and provide the ironic simile “as fast as any IM or text network.” As the reader, we know that if Reggie admitted guilt, he would become the main focus for the town gossip. The reason: he was texting when he shouldn’t have been. So, the word usage of “text network” is appealing to the reader’s attention. The use of diction on page 41-42 provides an important piece of information about the town of Tremonton and an ironic simile for the reader.
