Adulthood and Aging Social Processes and Development

My topic and article are about social selection that can begin in early adulthood. The individuals a person surround themselves with are crucial to who that person is and becomes. The article was enlightening and gave me insight into the ways in which I interact with people. I am better able to understand many of the choices in my life when I compare it to gathered information about others. The article states that as a person ages they tend to maintain a consistent amount of close relationships. “In the last quarter of the twentieth century, it became increasingly clear that understanding older adults requires an examination of individual experiences across the life course.” Antonucci, T. C., Vandewater, E. A., & Lansford, J. E. (2000). Adulthood and aging: Social processes and development. In A. E. Kazdin (Ed.), Encyclopedia of psychology, Vol. 1 (pp. 79-85). Washington, DC New York, NY USUS: American Psychological Association. This is very interesting to me as I try to mold my kids and direct them to make the right choices. Our lives center on our careers and relationships, leaving less time for anything else. Early adulthood is the period between adolescence and adulthood where we live in limbo. We are not quite adults, and we haven't left some of our adolescent games behind. As we do begin to leave our adolescence, we say goodbye to proms and high school football games and stumble into the work force and the beginnings of passionate love. I am finding out that not only is it important to have a solid foundation as a youth, it is also important to be surrounding my kids around positive and wholesome people as youths. Kids these day and age face some many stress factors and peer pressure that it is so important that we choose wisely who they are...

We Are in the World, but Not of the World.

...We are in the world, but not of the world. ”This we know; the earth does not belong to man; man belongs to the earth” – ”We are in the world, but not of the world”. Are we the owner of the earth, or are we just here to maintain it? Jesus told us in the bible that we’re in the world, but not of the world. Since the creation of the Earth we have struggled with the desire of being mightier and greater than God. We wanted to separate us from God, even though God gave us the earth to rule, but we didn’t care: we wanted to have dominion. Every man and woman is born with the same desire. Some can control it, but some follows this desire. This feeling is presented trough the texts “Selling our land” and “Dominion over Nature”. The white man is described as a stranger who comes in the night to take from the land whatever he needs, and it is because the earth is the enemy to the white man, and when he has conquered it he moves on. He considers the world as his own. Chief Seattle describes the white man’s carelessness like this: “His appetite will devoir the Earth and leave behind only a desert”, and that the white man thinks he can buy a land, even though he doesn’t own it. Chief Seattle’s attitude to nature is positive, but his opinion on the white man’s attitude to the nature is very negative. But shall the nature take dominion over us, or shall we take control over nature? The desire of being the greatest is clarified by Robert Pack trough this quote “Taking dominion......

The World

...My aunt to me the greatest person in this world, one of a kind and one in a million Sometimes I know the words to say, Give thanks for all you've done, But then they fly up and away, As quickly as they come, She has the biggest heart with the most caring touch, which she shares with so many of us. How could I possibly thank you enough, The one who makes me whole, The one to whom I owe my life, The forming of my soul, Her soul is made of pure love, yet she's worth way more than gold, The one who tucked me in at night, The one who stopped my crying, The one who is an expert At knowing when I am lying, In my eyes, she will always be, the most beautiful person to walk the earth. The one who makes such sacrifices, To always put me first, Who lets me test my broken wings No matter how much it hurts, To me she's the smartest woman I know, and it truly does show. For accepting me as I changed Accepting all my flaws, Not loving ‘cause you had to, But loving just because, There is no one that compares to her, no one that even comes close, For never giving up on me, Even when your nerves had reached the end, For always being proud of me, For being my best friend, On a high pedestal is where I hold her, for I admire her so much more than she knows. Having her apart of my life is the greatest gift of all, being in her presence is god's blessing to me. Looking deep inside of her, I see that strong, wise woman I hope to become, So thank you Auntie for everything, And most of all thank......

Cravens World

...Cravens World When you first walk into Cravens World Exhibit the walls and floor are painted white, very simplistic in order to avoid overwhelming the observer. The observers eye is automatically drawn to a circular shelving system, which holds many of the aesthetic artifacts. The center piece is transparent to provide the observer the opportunity to examine objects from every side and perspective. There are no distractions in the exhibit, other than the other marvelous artifacts mounted on the wall and in clear cases. Surrounding the main circle are artifacts in display windows from all around the world. There is close to no description as to what each artifact is on the main display, only an inventory number which the viewer then has to search in a detailed book to find more information on each item. Tucked away in a corner is a touch screen computer that allows you to explore all the tagged items to find out where they came from. Cravens World exhibit is “designed and constructed for visual encounters— you enter a transformative space. Hundreds of objects surround you, human achievements from other places and time”(Cravens World, p.27). The center piece was specifically designed to mimic a globe in real life, and the artifacts are placed strategically placed in relation to their origin on the globe, hence Cravens World. The artist wanted the observer to experience the world of the human aesthetic through artifacts which were created over many generations. Within the...

My "Two Worlds"

...can say that I have had an amazing childhood growing up in Nimes France and moving to the States. By moving to the States I have had the privilege to see how the other half of the world lives, literally. I have learned that the two “worlds” aren’t that different, except for the language of course, but it has taught me how to look past the differences in people. Just by looking at me you have your own idea of who I am, I have blue eyes, brown hair, and wear glasses. But that’s all you can really “see” about me. There are a few things you can’t tell by just looking at me, like that I was born on a Naval Ship in the Atlantic Ocean and lived in Nimes France till I was four. Or that I have two younger twin brothers, an older sister, I just turned nineteen this past Saturday, and I love the countryside. I love to draw which is why I am looking for a major in the Architectural field. But really I am just like any other students here were all trying to find where we belong in this world. There are A couple events and people that have influenced and in away shape who I am today. One major influencer in my life is my parents, because of them I have become in mind a fairly well rounded student and person. With their help and the help from friends and some teachers, they have all prepared me for the “real world” and helped me become an outgoing independent person. My dad has always taught me to work hard for what I want and I can say he has done a pretty good job at showing me that,......

The World in 100 Years

...GS152 The world in 100 years I can’t truly state whether the world will be worse, or if it will be better 100 years from today. What I do know though, is that everything will be different; all the way from the creation and development of things to the construction of our everyday lives. As of right now the world in my eyes is hard to picture in 30, 20, or even 10 years from now, let alone a whole 100 years from today. Advancements in every aspect of the world happens in what seems like less than 2 years, meaning that in 2115 the world may be entirely remodeled; if it’s here at all. Looking back on the recent years there is one huge key factor that has easily changed the world and will continue to do so for centuries. What I am talking about is technology; with the extremely rapid growth and expansion of technology I see the world doing two things. One is becoming ran by electronics. Not in the way that some see technology taking over today, but in a literal sense. For example, the movie iRobot, everything is ran by technology and there are a mix of robots and humans. Secondly, and the largest belief of mine, I see the advancements in technology curing many of today’s problems. What I’m meaning by that is everything will be so advanced that it’ll make living easier. The United States Government will be straightened out and organized by the advancements, meaning war will be stopped and peace will be throughout us all. This will lead to all of the world working together......

Computer Simulated World

...Introduction Conspiracy theories are some of the most talked about topics in the entire world. Many of the conspiracies out there range from either it’s possible to completely off the wall. The one conspiracy theory that caught my interest out of all the others though, was the idea that we are living in a computer simulation created by an intelligent race. Many of the most intelligent people in the world believe we are actually living in a computer simulated universe, and these are some of the most brilliant minds in the world. The computer simulation theory is primarily based around the matrix movie which I have a small picture of in Figure A (hitman, 2011), but not entirely based around it. In the theory, scientists believe that we are all in a computer simulation being run by a higher being or beings. One of the biggest arguments here would probably be that we have free will, so we cannot just be in a simulation. Many people believe though that God works in mysterious ways and in the end has a master plan for us all. What if God is just controlling us just like we control characters on games like the Sims, and we just think that we are actually in control of our destinies? One of the leading theories scientist claim proves this idea is the Brain-In-A-Vat Argument. In this theory a person’s brain is removed from their body and is floating in life sustaining fluid. The brain then is connected with wires that simulate the impulses it would normally be receiving, all......

Immigrants in the New World

...Immigrants in the New World Essay Immigrants encounter several issues when moving from different areas of the world. The three main issues of migrating are employment, social integration and language barriers. They must encounter the struggles arising from a change in society and with its advancing development newcomers must bear even greater challenges. However, as the people of our society tend to grow outward in a positive, encouraging and welcoming manner, growing wary through stressful considerations of migration are become less and less of an issue. Immigrants, despite their intellect, skill and abilities in any general field, they are less likely to be considered for a field of employment and/or position than that of one who is native to the country. Many newcomers come to realize that they are unable to receive anything more than low-paying positions. Those possessing foreign qualifications may find it difficult to compare to the standards of the new country. In some cases, employers may not consider employees of specific racial backgrounds. These factors make job availability increasingly more difficult that it already is which his rather disappointing considering societal development. The world is composed of people who perceive culture views and standards of society in very different manners. Preparation for the World of Work

...Preparation for the World of Work As a college student it is very important that we utilize our time wisely to prepare ourselves for the world of work. With little or no preparation at all, it is very likely that failure will come sooner or later in some form. There are many small things you could do now to make sure when the time comes you are more than prepared. Watch your dress code. Sometimes, most fashionable isn’t always the way to go. Certain fads are not business appropriate, and some clients and managers find some styles offensive and distracting. Business casual should always be the style of choice concerning the world of work. The same goes for hairstyles. We all know that sometimes females more so than men like to dye their hair different colors. This is fine; just try to go with natural like colors. Hair color can also be a distraction. Always turn your phone off during important meetings and such. If you are expecting an important call, by all means leave your phone on silent NOT vibrate. This way you will be able to see the missed call and return it at an appropriate time. The “vibrate” option is never a smart decision for meetings. We all can clearly hear someone’s phone vigorously vibrating in one’s pocket or suitcase and it’s just as distracting as the phone actually ringing. Don’t over multi task. Taking on too many things at once means something is definitely going to get overlooked. It is easy to skip past important detail when trying to do too......
