In today`s world, the development of the younger generation is greatly affected by digitization. Technology changes the experience of childhood not only socially but also in both economical and cultural aspects. Technology has the greatest influence on the world today, and we are constantly surrounded by it and life will almost be impossible without it (Davies, 2010). In the below summary, I have outlined briefly how the media has changed the lives of the young generation:

The article basically outlines the social, economic and cultural changes that have come about due to digitization. The media is so much engrossed in our lives that it would be impossible for our young generation to survive in its absence. The internet, video and television dictate the morals, cultures and characters the young pick up as they grow up.

There are some economic aspects of change brought about by the digital age. In today’s era, Children seem to be staying younger longer. This creates financial dependence which is worsened by the stagnating youth labor market and consequently leading to delayed entrance into adulthood. In addition, there has been tremendous rise in the spending power. The main concern here is not only on the money young people spend but their influence on family decision concerning expenditure and how they might be incorporated into consumer life. The spending power has significantly increased since the 1960s among teens while children between 4 and 12 years influencing the spending in their households (Muller, 2010). The spending habits among the young are also influenced by their different tastes as some may prefer Facebook to Twitter.

The digital has also brought about some social changes. Today, many young people are spending 50 hours per week indoors watching various media. This raises concern as to whether the child will be able to form face to face relationships and also whether the children will be physically fit due to spending hours of inactivity, among other issues

On a nutshell, this article elaborates how digital mediation plays an important role on how children developing a digitalized world. It also outlines evidence through research how technology has affected the daily lives of our young generation.

Student's response: I have noticed how much at the digital age has been affecting children at younger ages. I volunteered last year with Peacy by PEACE, an organizational that conducts conflict resolution workshops in elementary school classrooms. The biggest issue in my classroom was bullying amongst girls via Instagram. This was so new to me because this is so different from any form of bullying I had experienced or noticed around when I was growing up. I agree with the part of the article that mentions the importance of keeping up with the digital age. It is important for us to know these things, not only to keep lessons new and modern, but also to know what is happening outside the classroom and off our watch .In addition; it is also a concern that children are exposed to sexual orientation early thanks to the media. This is attributed to the many sources that offer sex related content. As we well know children learn best on a monkey see monkey do basis thus they will not hesitate to try out what they see on the media weather positive or negative. It’s therefore important for parents to monitor their children closely to avoid regrets at a later time.

The article explains how children aren’t able to recognize emotions on each other as a result of constant use of the technology. The use of technology has decreased the face to face interaction between individuals, especially children who communicate through phones, chatting online, Facebook etc. In the article they did a test where two groups of students were taken to camp and in each group there were 5 kids. In group one the kids weren’t able to bring along their technology and in the second group the kids were able to bring along their technology such as phones, laptops etc. What was noticed was that the non-use of technology in the first group showed significant improvement in the children’s ability to recognize emotions and understand feelings. Technology is key to learning but it can also be degrading to the learning process. It may enhance some aspects of learning while degrading others, but what if in the future recognizing emotions is not important, then does it really matter if our children aren’t able to recognize emotions and feelings. Overall does the degradation that technology poses; pose a threat to our future? This article relates closely to the main article where parents raise concerns whether their children will be able to hold face to face conversations in future due to much exposure to the media. The media is effective if used in moderation as too much of something is poisonous. Children should not bury themselves in the media and forget to live a happy fulfilled life which can only be achieved when we relate to mankind.

Student’s response:

-" we live in its constant presence, even when we are not plugged in and turned on” Here, the writer meant that we are surrounded by technology even when our electronic devices like the T.V, Laptops and the likes are turned off.

- "It is now virtually impossible for children and youth to imagine what it would be like to grow up with or without the internet, television, video games and pop music This means that the youth has paid so much attention to the media that they cannot live without it. During their free time for example most young people prefer to stay indoors watching movies or browsing through the internet. They prefer staying by themselves than relating with their peers. This in turn creates bad social skills among our young generation.

What is the role of the media in controlling the content our young people are exposed to?

In response to this question, Marrisa mentioned that the media like Television broadcasts can censor media adult content. They can also try and air such content late at night when most children have retired to bed.

What is the role of the parents in ensuring our youths are not slaves to technology?

Mahta stated that Parents can encourage their children to socialize with their peers especially on weekends rather than sitting by themselves buried in various media.

How teachers should deal with media in future?

In response to this, Gayahiri mentioned that teachers should expose children to computers for example later contrary to most schools that introduce computers to children as early as the first grade.

Can the youths live without technology?

On this response, Kaitlyn mentioned that the youth can indeed live without technology though it can be a tough adjustment .Technology is not a necessity to life that many can do without it.

Has the media simplified the way our children should be raised up?

In response to this, Dakota mentioned that the media has complicated the lives of our young generation. This is especially so as digitalization is being abused and there is no limit of how much is too much.

In conclusion, as discussed above, technology has come with it blessings and curses and a balance is the only solution to too much of a good thing is poisonous.
