Throughout the coarse of this semester, this course has demanded me to expand the amount of critical thinking I put forth while reading and discussing literature. Prior to my experience in this coarse I had a very narrow mindset as to what I received from the words and events that took place in in the various books I had read. Like many people, I picked up the critical events that took place throughout plot. However I never really fully engaged myself into thinking outside of the box and trying to see the meaning behind such events and why they were truly meaningful in what was happening to the characters. Now that I have been exposed to this the detailed analysis over the coarse of several short stories, I think I am now more aware of what I am actually reading, as well as what the deeper significance is to the surrounding plot. There were a few quotes and events that took place during some of these short stories that really caught my eye and was able to for a connection with in result.
The most notable quote I can think of that stood out to me was in one of the more recent short stories we read, The Colored Museum. The quote is as followed, ““... ,cause I’m not what I was ten years ago or ten minutes ago. I’m all of that and then some. And whereas I can’t live inside yesterday’s pain, I can’t live without it.” I found this quote appealing because I feel like it relates to me and a lot of people in my age group. I feel this way because we’re all at a point in our lives where were trying to find out whom we truly are and also what direction we want to move toward for our future. I for one feel as though at times people can forget who they truly are and what they believe in. This is especially the case with people like me going away to college. We all feel as though, since were in a new place, were able to have a fresh start and almost erase negative things that

Explain Why Movie Theaters Should Be Allowed To Eat At The Theater

...After the lights dim in the movie theater, your sibling asks if you could pass them the snack they picked out at the gas station down the street. Then, 1 of the theater workers walks in to check on the people. The worker sees you pull something out of your bag and walks toward you. “Is that outside food, don’t do it again,” he says. Outside food should be allowed in movie theaters. Food in movie theaters is unhealthy. If you are on a diet or just can’t eat food that is not healthy, you would have to bring something from home is you want to eat during the movie. You could be allergic to ingredients that is in most of the food there and can only eat food that doesn’t contain that ingredient, but the theater says no outside food. Leo's Four-Plex Theater

...Leo’s Four-Plex Theater To address the issue of cash receipts, the owner would be well advised to create a control making the cashiers more responsible for any shortages by either having to pay for their shortfalls or linking their salary to the shortage that occurs. Furthermore, additional data should be printed on the tickets to address from which ticket booth each sale took places and have a designated schedule to cross reference which employee was responsible for selling the tickets associated with the shortfall. As the refreshment stand suffered from a lack of cash collection for sales and failure to process sales for many items, the management should segregate the duties and have separate employees responsible for delivering the snacks (only after payment with a receipt) and entering sales/collecting cash. This would ensure that any one employee couldn’t give special treatment to their friends or preferred customers. Another option would be to hire employees from a different town where they would be less likely to provide free food to customers with which they are unfamiliar. The ticket collectors should be instructed to focus on the existing control system regarding the ticket dating and coloring and be held accountable for any deviations between those who view the movies and the number of tickets received along with their respective ticket colors. Additionally, security cameras or other surveillance techniques should be implemented to reduce the number of non ticket...

Comparing Theater and Cinema Essay

...Comparing Theater and Cinema Essay Milagros Torres ARTS/100 February 2, 2015 Lisa Turner Comparing Theater and Cinema Essay Jaws is a perfect movie. A movie that is the standard for the “animal on the loose” genre, and it is unlikely to ever be overshadowed. The movie preys on the human mind’s ability to construct horrors beyond any the screen can provide. The audience does not actually see the shark until an hour into the movie. But the shark isn’t just a shark. The shark is a representation of consumerism in this memorable movie. Symbolism The shark in Jaws represents consumerism in society. This is first demonstrated in the scene where the sheriff, a recent transplant from New York and therefore an outsider to the town, tries to close down the beaches after learning of the first shark attack. The sheriff is confronted by the mayor and fathers of the town in the confined space of one of Amity’s ferries, suggesting the island’s isolation and dependence on beach-going summer tourists for its livelihood and survival (AMC Filmsite, n.d.). Amity’s mayor informs the sheriff that he cannot close the beaches on his own authority, and must have a civic ordinance or resolution by the town’s Board of Selectmen. Their one and only concern is what impact closing the island’s beaches will have on the businesses in the exclusive town. The sheriff, symbolizing the “everyman” of society, is forced into a cover-up and ordered to keep the beaches open. Because of this...

Home Viewing Versus Theater Viewing

...watching it in a theater Watching a movie at home or watching a movie in a theater, which one do you prefer? This answer could vary, depending on who you ask. It could depend on the amenities that a person has in their home, such as a home theater system. It could also depend on if a person is a home body, or if the person is someone who likes to go out for social interaction. Then it becomes home viewing versus theater viewing. Regardless on the person you ask there are definitely similarities and differences which will be covered in this paper. Watching movies at home has come a long way over the past few years. With technology increasing and prices decreasing on high definition televisions, projectors, and surround sound stereo systems home theaters are becoming more popular. With home theaters you have the convenience of viewing a movie at home with the same viewing experience as you would in the theater. When viewing at home you are able to watch movies at your convenience, while being able to pause, fast forward, rewind, a convenience you would not have if viewing a movie in a theater. Also viewing a movie at home you have the comfort of lying in bed, relaxing on a sofa, and eating whatever you like. Whereas when viewing a movie at the theater you have whatever amenities they provide. Another convenience of home viewing is the aspect of cost, when viewing a movie at home there is little to no cost for the movie. Whereas if you go to the theater to watch a movie...

...classics in translation as well as notable Filipino plays, as it aimed to promote the cultural development of the youth and of the Filipino language through theater. Teatro Pilipino popularize a number of classic masterpieces of world theater among Filipino audiences by translating them into Filipino. Rolando S. Tinio believed that by translating these masterpieces for the Filipino audiences, he was also translating the philosophies and ideologies behind those plays as well. As such, the production of such plays serve as vehicles to intellectualize the Filipino audience. After a 1975 pilot season of two plays sponsored by the Department of Public Information and the Cultural Center of the Philippines, Teatro Pilipino was formally introduced as one of the two resident drama companies of the CCP. After a change in government in 1986, the new CCP Management decided to let go of its two resident drama companies, forcing Teatro Pilipino to move to its new home at the old Metropolitan Theater (MET) at Lawton, near Downtown Manila. After the death of its principal actor, Dame Ella Luansing-Tinio in 1991, the closing curtain fell for the last time, and fittingly on its take on William Shakespeare's The Twelfth Night (IKALABING-DALAWANG GABI). The play was produced as a showcase piece for the then ongoing Unang Tagpo: National Theater Festival hosted by the CCP. The most notable productions of Teatro includes the maiden presentation of Bienvenido "Boy" Noriega's Bayan-Bayanan in 1975;...

...PHILIPPINE THEATER Theater in the Philippines is as varied as the cultural traditions and the historical influences that shaped it through the centuries. The dramatic forms that flourished and continue to flourish among the different peoples of the archipelago include: the indigenous theater, mainly Malay in character, which is seen in rituals, mimetic dances, and mimetic customs; the plays with Spanish influence, among which are the komedya, the sinakulo, the playlets, the sarswela, and the drama; and the theater with Anglo-American influence, which encompasses bodabil and the plays in English, and the modern or original plays by Fihpinos, which employ representational and presentational styles drawn from contemporary modern theater, or revitalize traditional forms from within or outside the country. The Indigenous Theater The rituals, dances, and customs which are still performed with urgency and vitality by the different cultural communities that comprise about five percent of the country’s population are held or performed, together or separately, on the occasions of a person’s birth, baptism, circumcision, initial menstruation, courtship, wedding, sickness, and death; or for the celebration of tribal activities, like hunting, fishing, rice planting and harvesting, and going to war. In most rituals, a native priest/priestess, variously called mandadawak, catalonan, bayok, or babalyan, goes into a trance as the spirit he/she is calling upon possesses him/her. While entranced...

...In his book, Act One: An Autobiography, Moss Hart says, “The theater is an inevitable refuge of the unhappy child.” (Hart, p 10, 1959) This theory, coming from a man who created some of Broadway’s brightest and most memorable musical comedies, represents a duality that is crucial to understanding his life and its works. While he was notorious for his extravagant belongings and spending indulgences, reaping the spoils from his place at the pinnacle of the world he’d always obsessed over, Hart also suffered from massive bouts of depression and self-doubt. (Wolcott) If his lifetime worth of work that brought people such joy really was a result of experiencing the lowest of personal lows, it may shed light into why he was such a tireless worker throughout his thirty year career on Broadway. Moss Hart was born October 24, 1904 in the Upper East Side of Manhattan in New York City, New York. His parents, immigrants of England, worked as cigar makers and had their dreams of a better life in a new country dashed not long after moving to America with the introduction of the machine manufactured cigar. (Teachout, p 90, 2010) Hart would frequently joke that he was, “Born on Fifth Avenue… on the wrong end.” While some might look back on a hard upbringing with gratitude and appreciation, even as he grew very rich Hart always viewed his impoverished childhood with contempt and disgust. (Aronson, p 170, 1995) He described it in his autobiography as growing up with, “the dark brown taste...

...Summary  of  “The  Importance  of  Being  Earnest”   In Oscar Wilde’s “The Importance of Being Earnest,” Jack Worthing, the play’s protagonist, is a young man who shoulders many responsibilities as a respectable citizen of Victorian society. In Hertfordshire, he is appointed the role of guardian to Miss Cecily Cardew, by the deceased Mr. Thomas Cardew, who adopted Jack when he was found abandoned as a baby. He also carries the title of Justice of the Peace and controls a large country estate. As such, he invents an alter ego for himself whom he calls Earnest. Earnest possesses all the qualities Jack pretends to disapprove of; he is exciting and irresponsible. Whenever Jack seeks freedom from his responsibilities he goes into London and tells Cecily he must take care of his brother Earnest who is always getting into trouble. In truth, Jack is posing as Earnest in London and Jack in the country. In Act I, Jack goes into London to tell Algernon Moncrieff, his friend, that he intends to propose to Gwendolen Fairfax, Algernon’s cousin. Algernon, who has begun to suspect Jack’s alter ego, asks Jack why he has a cigarette case addressed to “Uncle Jack” with the inscription, “From little Cecily with her fondest love.” Jack explains that his true name is Jack Worthing and that he takes the name Earnest in London whenever he wants to indulge in certain pleasures. Algernon confesses that he too tries to escape the boundaries put on him by pretending he has a fictitious...

Theatre or theater is a collaborative form of fine art that uses live performers to present the experience of a real or imagined event before a live audience in a stage. The performers may communicate this experience to the audience through combinations of gesture, speech, song, music, and dance. ...The theater performance that I viewed is named “Bonnie and Clyde”. This performance is of the musical genre. It contained a series of musical acts that provided a different view to this historical event. The performance was directed and choreographed by Jeff Calhoun. Ivan Menchell wrote the performance and the music was composed by Frank Wildhorn. The musical selections within the performance developed the story in a unique way. Rather than having a narrator explain scenes and sections of the storyline, the performers revealed the plot with songs and dance numbers. While this helped the audience to understand the plot it also drew them in to the performance by stimulating emotions. There were musical selections such as “Raise a Little Hell” that revealed the pain of one of the main characters Clyde Barrow, while selections such as “You Love Who You Love” stimulated the audience in a passionate way. The characters were identifiable from the very beginning of the performance. All the characters in the performance were representations of real people in this story. The story was historical in nature therefore realistic features such as wardrobe, speech and settings developed most of the performance. One of the main characters was Clyde Barrow. His character was identifiable from the moment his story began because it started with his childhood and his parents would often scold him by yelling his name loudly. This is also similar to the second main character Bonnie Parker because she...

...Response Paper #1: Race in Theater The issue of race was prevalent in society during the times when theater first came about. It is only natural that this way of thinking would push through in different plays, whether it being Greek or African American. When people hear about ‘race issues’ they tend to automatically think of black and white racism. Of course this is one of the main segregations, but race issues can be seen in many different circumstances and cultures. For example, there was some type of discrimination shown in the play, Medea. The film, Master Harold and the Boys definitely brought to light another aspect of superiority issues; as well as the play, Death and the King’s Horsemen. Stereotyping is a very common way in which racism is perpetuated in theater. The Minstrel shows, which were performed in the 1830’s, were a major way that people stereotyped blacks. The whites would dress up with black masks and portray dumb characters. This was purely for entertainment but it affected our culture and how people view African Americans. Even cartoons in the earlier days would have characters with huge lips or black skin that were always the dumbed down silly characters. This just made racism worse by displaying it on television, making it a part of our culture. In the play Medea, Euripides portrays Medea as being a foreign woman, barbaric, and not as important as the Greeks. This shows how racism exists in all types of cultures. The play, Death and the King’s Horsemen...

A Theater for Everyone

...A Theater for Everyone When a play is performed, the theater is filled with spectators of all races, genders, and backgrounds. Most theaters target the vast majority of the populous using broad ideas and plots we’ve seen before in movies and other theaters. However, since the 1960’s a great number of theaters have been formed devoted to plays by and about specific ethnic, gender, and political groups. These theaters have many different purposes and the plays performed are altered in ways they may reach different people. Plays make money by corralling people in a theater and appealing to their senses in different ways. But, these plays and theaters must attract as many different people as possible in order to make a good profit. Plays like Twelve Angry Men have been altered in some theaters to incorporate women roles in order to appeal to a specific gender. Seeing as though fifty percent of the world is composed of women, a play with all male roles seems a bit outdated. Twelve Angry Men has had it’s name altered to Twelve Angry Jurors in order to add women roles to the jury and even the main character. Gender is a big factor in playwriting. Women enjoy plays as much as men do and diversifying roles is a good way to bring more women into the theater thus increasing profit. Profit is not the only reason for reaching out to specific genders. The Weird Sisters Women’s Theater Collective is based in Austin, Texas and is dedicated to promoting women in Theater and other arts...
