Theme Of Burnout In Athletes

The topic of burnout in athletes is becoming a big problem underlying sports in today’ssociety and can happen as young as ten years old. According to The Foundations of Sport and Exercise Psychology, burnout is defined as physical, emotional, and social withdrawal from a formally enjoyable sport activity. In a recent article written by Devin A. Markle and Kathryn Scardino, they stated that, “more is not always better.” There are many different causes to burnout in athletes such as overtraining, injury, travel, negative parental influences, dissatisfaction with social life, and unfulfilled expectations (Weinberg, Gould, 2015, p. 514). When dealing with burnout, there are many different signs and symptoms athletes may demonstrate. Some of these …show more content…
Marckle and Scardino’s first suggestion for athletes was to make sure to take at least one day off during the training week to give your brain and body a chance to recover. Taking time to rest is very important and can help reduce the risk of burnout. According to the book, Foundations of Sport and exercise Psychology, taking relaxation breaks is very important and is essential for mental and physical wellbeing. When athletes trains all week, have games, and practices it can produce mental and physical fatigue. Therefore, when an athlete cuts back on training loads and intensities it can be associated with an increase in positive mental health (Weinberg, Gould, 2015, p. 522). Another tip for athletes given by Markle and Scardino is to develop stress management and coping tools. Developing stress management and coping skills is very important for athletes to prevent burn out because it will help reduce some of the stress that the athlete is facing. There is a finding by Raedeke and Smith that shows a significant relationship between burnout and the amount of stress athletes feel (Weinberg, Gould, 2015, p. 514). Also, developing psychological skills such as relaxation, imagery, goal setting, and positive self-talk can ward off much of the stress that leads to burnout in athletes (Weinberg, Gould, 2015, p. …show more content…
Markle and Kathryn Scardino, was a very informative article. For someone who may be looking for information on athlete burnout this would be a good article to read. There is a lot of information listed and very straightforward. For someone who did not have any knowledge about sport psychology they would easily be able to understand the information. When Markle and Scardino gave tips and suggestions on how to prevent burnout it can be easily carried out. The suggestions given were for athletes, coaches, and parents and if each individual where to read their suggestion they could understand and have no problem completing that task. I would consider this article good because the information is very straightforward. It gives a lot of background information on burnout itself so one can easily understand it better. I also think it is a good article due to the way the information is assembled. The article started off by giving general information, then going into the causes of burnout, burnout warning signs, and then tips to combat burnout in
