Then and Now

Life, is it the same as it was millions of years ago? No, this is because of what is known as evolution. The world is forever changing. There seems to be something new discovered all the time. This maybe because the scientist have not had time to explorer everywhere and everything. However, there could also be another explanation to this, evolution. Evolution is a scientific theory that helps to explain the presences of new varieties of living things, both now, in the present as well as in the history of the earth. The theory of evolution is based on the differences and similarities that occur within living things over a period of time and among habitats. It takes in consideration the biological processes that occur of genetic drift, natural selection, gene mutations, and changes in the habitats that occur. This theory explains why in the past there may have been many different varieties of a species, but now there are far less of them.

A species changes over time. It can grow bigger, smaller, develops new traits, or many other things can change in it. The evolution of a horse is an example of this. Over 50 million years ago, the horse was an animal that was about the size of today’s dog. The earlier horses were better suited for a tropical area than the plains of out west. However, because of evolution they adapted this maybe because of other animals that were predators or because of the lack of resources that were available. Horses even had multiple toes similar to what humans have that they used to walk on. However, not only were animals evolving, the earth was as well. There were new land formations and new vegetation that different animals had to learn to live in. The evolution of the horse allowed it to start changing in several ways. One of the main ones was the need it had for being able to run from predators that allowed it to start placing most of it weight upon the three middle toes. In doing this, the outer toes were no longer needed and eventually what was once the toes became the hoof of today. This is just one example of what evolution is it is a species developing traits that are needed over time to survive. Due to what is known as speciation, where it is the strongest that reproduce, the members of the species that have the most useful traits survive while the ones that has either the less desired or the less productive traits do not.
Human evolution has be a subject that has been studied and researched for many years. People are interested in where man came from and what humanity use to be like. There are a large number of different things that could show where man came from. However, when most think of evolution they just think of what the differences are in how man looked over time. Yes, this can be seen in the different developments of the human fossils that are found. These fossils allow scientists to look at the changes of the body size, brain size, and occasionally the diet. However, unlike in the case of the horses, just looking at the size of the physical body does not tell everything. With humans there is much more to learning the changes of evolution.
Though the physical traits of man have changed, some of the most noticeable things that man has developed have been the way that they did things, or how they did them. This would be in how some the first men are thought to have lived as nomads that roamed the land. This was due to them having to look and hunt for food. Though at some point man stopped roaming and began to farm the land. The evidence that has been found to show this has been tools that were used changing. Some evidence has also been found that they started to develop a type of art even. The art objects found have also progressed as evolution continued. This was in the details of the objects as well as the medium that was used to create it. As man evolved so did the items that were created to help with the existence of life.
The beginning of man though is the same as the apes of today, they are both primates. Through the study of genetics, it has been learned that humankind is related to more of the species on the earth than ever before. Also in using genetics, scientists can track the movement of Homo sapiens and the history of their beginnings. Between the genetics and carbon dating of things, humanity’s history is being revealed. It has been learned that humanity is related to most every species that lives upon earth.
The mystery of early man has always made people want to know more. Did we evolve from apes? Were there many different species of types of men that did not survive? Are today’s man a descendent of what most have heard of as the Neanderthals? There are not answers for most of the questions that could be asked for this subject. However, there has been descendants to the Homo group found that can give some insight to these questions. The Homo sapiens of today appeared in the fossil records around 250,000 years ago in the regions of Africa. The direct descendants are believed most likely to be the Homo rhodesiensis. It is also thought that some of the Homo sapiens left Africa around 100,000 years ago and went toward northern Europe and did inter-populate with the Neanderthals.
Many things have been learned of the history of humankind by studying the fossils of yesterday years. The most impressive could be though the evolution of not just the earth and the creatures upon it, but the evolution of man. If man was wandering around millions of years ago just trying to survive similar to what the apes of today do, what might the world look like in another 5 million years? Could the apes evolve to what humanity is today?

...A Tool Used Then and Now My tool is a sharp-pointed stone. It’s usually made from flint, a type of stone. Homo Habilis made it by banging two stones together and breaking one of them, leaving it with a sharp edge. It could also be made by just flaking and chipping pieces off the edges of a flint stone. Early humans used this tool to cut bones, meat, twigs, and dead animal skins. Although this tool was substantially distinguished from others, it is very easily made and has multiple purposes. This tool was also used as a weapon, allowing early human ancestors to travel to different regions where they may have encountered dangerous animals. This enabled early humans to use this tool to hunt and to protect themselves. This tool reflects the past because it was created by ancient ancestors in ancient times. It reflects the present because knives and arrows were invented from the idea of a sharp pointed rock and are used in similar ways today. It reflects the future because overtime people will develop and discover more ways to use and make sharp objects. Time has affected this tool because where in ancient times this tool was hand-crafted using stone, modern inventions are often made from metals using robotic machinery. The one thing that remains the same is its purpose. My perspective of this tool is different from an ancient point of view because I simply see it as an ancient tool used long ago. We no longer have to make our tools by hand. I can just go to a store and buy...

...AUGUST 8, 2014 ARIEL G. VILLANUEVA BSBA-111 CASE STUDY: QUALITY IN PRACTICE “UNDERSTANDING THE VOICE OF THE CUSTOMER AT LAROZA’S PIZZA” I. COMPANY PROFILE: LaRosa’s is a privately held chain of neighborhood pizzerias with 54 location in Cincinnati, Ohio, northern Kentucky, and southeast Indiana, that offers full-service dine-in, carry-out and take home delivery. In 1997, as a part of a new strategy planning process, LaRosa’s identified growth as a key strategic goal. The executive management team had developed three growth strategies but could not agree on which one to follow because of a lack of a fact-based foundation for the decision. In 2000, a project team was formed to tackle this issue and was given complete latitude to make any recommendation for an Italian/pizzeria concept based on customer needs and expectations. The key tool that successfully led to an understanding of their customer’s and to a new and innovative restaurant design was Voice of the Customer ( VOC). VOC is a structured methodology for listening to customers that is promoted by the center for Quality of Management ( CQM) an industrial consortium based on Boston. The experience of using VOC changed the company focus from “ product-out” to a “market-in” mentality. It gave them a decision making tool based on factual data, broke down communication silos within the company, and eliminated the age old sales and marketing versus operations conflict. II. Now They Are Gone

...0480775 Professor Diamond English 51 (T/R) 18 September 2012 Now They Are Gone. Black clouds covered the sky, scraps of buildings flying and the terrifying screeching and crying of the crowd is how many remember September 11th, 2001. The city that was full of life, lights and people changed in an instant. September eleventh was a chaotic event that changed the views of not only our country, but the world as well. What seemed like a normal day in my life was actually a life changing event two thousand eight hundred miles away. I was in the fifth grade when terrorists crashed a plane into the twin towers. I lived in a decently small city in San Diego, California. I had never been to New York, but I always wanted to go. I got up and got dressed for school then walked to school. My teacher’s name was Mrs. Brady, and she was a cheerful and outgoing teacher, but on this morning she was unusually somber and seemed nervous. I remember her on the phone for the first few minutes of class. The principal spoke over the intercom “Students, we are releasing everyone early to go home.” I was happy. My father did not have work, so I went to his house. The news was on every channel and I just wanted to watch a “kid show” I kept telling my father. When my mother got off of work, my parents sat me down to talk. “Why don’t I have school today?” I asked. “The school felt it was best for everyone to be home because there has been an attack on the largest building in New York City...

...writing requires many different tools, strategies, and devices, which could be applied by Sharpe to improve her argument.  Although Sharpe has many flaws in her argument, she also utilizes many positive tools.  One of these positive aspects in her argument was the comparing of time periods.  By stating that there has been a significant increase in foreign language speakers from 1990 to 2007, and specifically stating how much, she concretely gives an example of her argument and the scale in which her argument is relevant.   Although this comparison of time periods is a positive aspect in her paper, there is also a problem with her information.   Sharpe’s data is no longer current. Now that the current year is 2011, any 2007 data is considered out dated, and is less relevant to the present day.  Now that her positive aspect of time comparison has been evaluated, a second positive aspect of Sharpe’s argument must be discussed. The second positive aspect of Sharpe's writing is the fact that she gave a reason for the problem.  Sharpe states in her article, "gone are the old night schools that once taught English to immigrants"(722).  She includes this fact in her article to further back up her...

Astronomy Then and Now

...Astronomy: Then and Now Have you ever heard the saying you can’t teach an ole dog new tricks? What about the one where three old dogs teach new tricks? I’m sure you have heard that one, anyone who knows about our solar system can thank the three old dogs. Well, they’re not dogs at all, and at their time they weren’t old but in our time their long gone. Of course, I am speaking about Ptolemy, Copernicus, and Kepler. Funny thing is each one of them challenged and changed their predecessor's work, for the better of course, but we will get to that later. We have these three men to thank for a whole lot of new tricks. To name a few would be, our solar system, the way we form our maps, and we can’t forget the numerous mathematical formulas used to make ideas come to life. In this research paper, we will touch base on the lives of three great astronomers and the tricks they have taught us. We will also see how astronomers of today contribute to our everyday lives. Some say that our first astronomer was a great astronomer. Other say, “Ptolemy was the only great astronomer of Roman Alexandria.” (Brown, 2016) It’s all a matter of opinion, but what we cannot deny was Ptolemy was a great astronomer of his time and today. We do not know much about Ptolemy’s personal life. What we do know about him came from his work. He was born around 85ce in Egypt to a Greek family even though he bore a roman name. To say Ptolemy was diverse is an understatement. He was also diverse in his studies...

Apocalypse Now

...Joseph Tanaka Dr. Whipple Eng 150 Apocalypse Now Review The sound of machine guns, the whirl of helicopter blades, and “the smell of napalm in the morning” makes Apocalypse Now by Francis Ford Coppola look like a traditional, action-packed Vietnam War movie. However, upon further examination, the film reveals a much deeper, ominous, and senseless reality that realistically depicts the Vietnam War. Apocalypse Now is a masterpiece of the nineteen sixty counter culture movement that is transposed into the characters of the Vietnam War. The aspects of Apocalypse Now that make it one of the most horrifying movies of the Vietnam era are the characters, the plot, and the setting. The horrifying way human beings treat one another is an enduring quality present in the characters Apocalypse Now. Lt. Col. Bill Kilgore’s Ninth Air Calvary embodies the brutality of the war because of his callous attack on a village filled with non combative residents. In the scene of the helicopter attack on the Mekong Delta village, a Vietnamese villager comes up to an American helicopter loading a wounded soldier and throws a hat with a grenade inside, blowing up everyone inside. Upon seeing this attack by a single villager, Kilgore exclaims, “Holy Christ she’s a savage, somebody get that Dink!” and a group of helicopters decimate her family trying to run away. Not only ruthless was Kilgore’s response but also the amusement that his own soldiers felt while shooting the woman and other innocent civilians...

Apocalypse Now

...will be investigating the use of Walter Murch’s Sound design on Apocalypse Now (1979) and The Conversation (1974) whiles exploring the use of different sound aesthetics found in a scene from each film. Examining these different techniques will shed light on just how much it affects the nature of the film itself and it’s audience through an audio-visual perspective. Apocalypse now has a fascinating use of sound that conveys tension, character subjectivity and at times suggests a psychoneurotic mind state in which diegetic/non-diegetic sound and music together alludes. How does Murch use sound and music to push the films narrative? In what way does Murch’s theories on sound help us understand the way in which it helps shape its accompanying visuals on screen or vis-versa. This will form part of a theoretical inquiry into sound in cinema as a whole whiles looking at the possible outcomes of a film without the use of some of these groundbreaking methods. Apocalypse Now, directed by Francis Ford Coppola is set during the Vietnam war, Cpt. Willard travels up the Nung River in Cambodia to kill Colonel Kurtz as part of top secret mission that apparently ‘doesn’t exist’. Apocalypse Now is widely regarded as a timeless masterpiece, unsurprisingly gaining Walter Murch an Oscar for his work on the beautifully orchestrated sound mix. Right from the start Murch describes his approach to this film as ‘jumping with both feet into the fire’ (Jarrett & Murch, 2000). This expression sums up...

Shopping - Then and Now

...Shopping – Then And Now There is no discussion that shopping habits have changed dramatically in the past 60 years. One of the biggest differences is online shopping. Many people now enjoy shopping from their computers, without a need to drive from store to store or standing in line to check out. But what is this kind of behavior doing to the social values on which the society is built? Will the malls and stores eventually stand empty? In 1950 there was no Internet and no super stores. When people needed groceries they would go to the grocery store and when they needed toys they would go to the toy store. There were a lot more small towns then and each town would have a large number of small stores to accommodate every shopping need. Each store was managed by its owner and emphasis was put on making the store an inviting place for people to go to. Stories were often exchanged in the stores and this way everyone knew when something was going on in the town. For holidays, many stores would work together to decorate the streets and store fronts and going shopping became a treat that involved more than just shopping. A family could spend a whole day looking at decorations and exchange news with friends while taking care of their shopping needs. Malls and department stores did exist in 1950, but they were more common around bigger cities and more densely populated areas. Malls were created to move shopping districts away from downtown areas and it was not unusual for someone to...

...Jordan Alexander Tuesday 6-8:50 History 1846- Present Document Analysis According to Black Elk, what atrocities took place at Wounded Knee? Black Elk as described it as just that a massacre that just destroyed a town/civilization, with no remorse whatsoever towards the people. Black Elk went into more detail about the whole fight and how it happened as to the others schemed over it. It was like a planned attack of these people and it wasn’t safe for any human being at that time. Kids, adult’s men and women, and babies that some were still attached to their mothers while dying. Overall just an unbelievable sight to see and vision as lives were taking and just left there like trash as a storm comes through and covers the bodies. As Black Elk stated at least they were in a better place for as the older children and adults but the babies were more innocent than anyone else. How did President Harrison describe these atrocities? The President described this as a way for the Sioux tribe to maybe test the waters on the laws that were being handed down to them by the government and engage with these issues. He also describes them as a turbulent group almost warlike in actions so they were excited to see what would go on. Harrison says because of their hostile ways, that this massacre could have be determined as to the result of them being so violent. Whom did Black Elk blame/ whom did Harrison blame? ...The Philippines is considered as a third world country which means, our economic status is still struggling, compared to other countries. In fact, we are known to be one of the countries who are leading in graft and corruption of government officials. These government officials work hard to propose projects which could help our country in various aspects. But are these enough for the Philippines to be progressive in terms of economy? Are these programs enough to offset the corruption in the government? I am not satisfied with the achievements of the previous presidents because I can’t see the improvement in our country through the years. The government officials promise us great plans to look forward to but once they get elected, these promises would be gone with the wind. Although some of their plans had benefits and were implemented successfully, most of the programs they launched were not credible and insufficient to meet the needs of the citizens. There were a lot of irrelevant projects that were prioritized more than the important ones. That just goes to show that some of them just formulated projects just to be able to say that they did something for the country, disregarding its importance. It is normal for a president to encounter problems in his administration, but he should focus on addressing the problem and not deal with insignificant programs first. One more thing about their programs is that they have good intentions and ideals but there were hidden agendas behind...
