In the play Seminar, by Theresa Rebeck, four young writers in New York turn to an experienced writer and editor in hopes to improved their work. The English writing seminar cost them $5000 each for a total of ten weeks. However, they are unable to finish the seminar because of differences. The very distant character traits allowed for the audience to clearly see the changes that they experience. Before reading and watching the play the word seminar gives the audience the idea that the play would be set in a classroom or lecture hall however setting it in an apartment allows for the atmosphere to be more casual. The play’s setting and dialogue helped the audience understand the characterization of the actors, while the lightning, scenic design and costumes aided in the …show more content…
One dramatic element that helped my understanding of the play was the characterization that was given. To really understand why the conflict and why they reacted to certain scenes. The audience learns the basic characteristics of the each character very early in the play, which allows a lot of time for character development. The audience gets sense of the type character Douglas, played by Schuyler Scott Mastain, from the very first time we heard him talk. He is very self-involved and self-serving person. We can gather that from the initial conversation in which he doesn’t really converse with any other character or invite them into the conversation. Martin, play by Myles Bullock, interrupts Douglas, unlike the two female characters Martin is not enthralled by the story. The character of Martin is does not appreciate the phony life of the privileged. This along with his reaction to how the price of the apartment the seminar takes place in shows us that he is a struggling writer. Izzy,
