THEORITICAL FRAMEWORK

One of the problems that beset our educational system is poor study habit. Several studies found this problem challenging and therefore, efforts have to be exerted in order to determine the root cause. According to Lass and Wilson (1965), student fails not because they do not have intelligence to understand why they are studying, not because their lessons are too difficult for them, but because they do not know how to study or understand what study means. Students’ failure in his academic subjects may not be to lack of intellectual capacity, but perhaps it may be due to negative attitude toward school or toward study or his not being able to posses good and efficient study habits.

...period just before a significant or concluding moment such as a deadline, due date or scheduled event. But in term of study, last minute is known as cramming. In Commonwealth countries this technique usually occurs during the revision week (week before exams), also known as “swotvac” or “stuvac” In education, cramming or last minute study (also known as mugging or swotting, from word swot, similar to "sweat", meaning "to study with determination") is the practice of working intensively to absorb large volumes of informational material in short amounts of time. It is often done by students in preparation for upcoming exams, especially at the last minute. Cramming is often discouraged by educators because the hurried coverage of material tends to result in poor long-term retention of material, a phenomenon often referred to as spacing effect. H.E. Gorst(year) stated in his book, 'The Curse of Education', “as long as education is synonymous with cramming on an organized plan, it will continue to produce mediocrity.” Generally considered as a negative study technique, cramming is becoming more and more common among students both at the secondary and post-secondary level. Pressure to perform well in the classroom and engage in extracurricular activities in addition to other responsibilities often results in the cramming method of studying. Cramming is a widely-used study skill performed in preparation for an examination or other performance-based assessment. Most common among......

The purpose of this article is to describe an information-processing perspective on the contribution of study skills to academic competence, and to identify evidence-based strategies that are effective in helping students to improve their study skills. Study habit, skill, and attitude inventories and constructs were found to rival standardized tests and previous grades as predictors of academic performance, yielding substantial incremental validity in predicting academic performance. We found that study skill inventories and constructs are largely independent of both high school grades and scores on standardized admissions tests but moderately related to various personality constructs; these results are inconsistent with previous theories. Study motivation and study skills exhibit the strongest relationships with both grade point average and grades in individual classes. Academic specific anxiety was found to be an important negative predictor of performance. In addition, significant variation in the validity of specific inventories is shown. Scores on traditional study habit and attitude inventories are the most predictive of......

...learner. Since the Philippines is gearing up toward the K to 12 program, much preparation is needed. According to Fairhurst and Fairhurst (1995), many teachers are familiar with other learning theories. One theory describes learners as auditory, visual or kinaesthetic. Howard Gardner (1983), describes learners as verbal/linguistic, logical/mathematical, spatial, musical interpersonal and intrapersonal. These theories are valuable in helping teachers recognize and respond to differences in learning styles. However, like most available learning theories, these theories focus primarily on the student’s learning process without taking into account the needs and skill of the teacher. According to Vygotsky (1978), also raised a significant point about teaching style when he argued that children’s understanding was not only developed through their interaction with the physical world but also through their active encounters with other in relation to the world. Related Studies About Study Habits

...The first Study Habits Inventory (SHI) was prepared in 1933 by Wrenn, with a view to survey this feature among students. In 1935 research workers interested in the improvement of study habits, they paid attention to the discovery of effective study techniques and tried to improve study skills and habits of work through ‘how to study’ courses and other systematic procedures. Cuff (1937) carefully derived study-habits inventory and found that it aids in finding the pupils in need of special guidance and helps to identify remedial work for the good and bad study habits of individual cases. Brown and Holtzman (1955) constructed a questionnaire to survey students ‘study habits', as well as their attitudes and motivation towards academic work. Items were compiled from group interviews with good and poor students, existing inventories on study habits, studies using observational and interview techniques and reports on related experiments in the field of learning. Scoring keys based on validity studies in ten colleges were developed. Study habits basically consist of effective methods of study (Sorenson, 1954). Study is the total of all the habits, determined purposes and enforced practices that the individual uses in order to learn. Study is hard work, no easy substitute is available (Armstrong, 1956), Brown and Holtzman (1956) and Srivastava (1967) point out that for good academic success, good study habits and attitudes are important. Some reports stress that certain personality......

...comes along with really knowing your subject matter. At the same time, though, there are many temptations when one sits down for study regardless if one is a high school or college student.(Sarah Donaghy, 2006) Study habit is a technique or a strategy used every time a person is studying. Some students would have the same study habit or may have a different one. Based on the researchers’ point of view, it depends on whether a specific study habit is effective for them. Students may use different kinds of techniques. For example, a student may study better when he/she is alone and without any distractions while some may study better if with group or if with some music. Others would learn better visually or auditory etc. These techniques or strategies may help to have an effective learning and studying. Beginning college is an exciting step toward a brighter future. Most teenagers expect it to be an exciting and fun adventure in their life, but worry about how to keep up with all those homework assignments. There are simple ways to keep up with studying and homework, but it takes dedication. It’s not really hard to keep up your grades, but you have to dedicate yourself to school and worry less about working full-time and partying. (Virginia Graces, 2008) The researchers became interested about this topic which talks about the different study habits of third year HRM students at DLSUD today. Since the researchers are part of this generation, they wanted to have better......
