I believe I deserve to be considered for the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority scholarship because I am a hardworking student who takes advantage of scholarship opportunities available to me. As a hard working student, I strive to commit myself thoroughly not only in my studies but also in my community. I constantly aim to improve my character by doing volunteer work and projects for the community. Recently, I have volunteered at South Central Regional Medical Center and Great Expectations Daycare. I was also a member of the Future Leaders of Jones County in which we helped restore the war memorial to pay respects to our veterans. I am a strong believer that education is the key to being successful. This is why I aim to do my best to get my education

Essay On Lambda Theta Alpha

...In 1975 Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority, Incorporated (LTA) was founded and the goal to revolutionize the image of Latina woman was born. It started at Kean University where seventeen lovely women joined together with the desire to create a Latina Sorority. A sorority that would allow minorities to have a voice and pave a way for the success of future generations. Lambda Theta Alpha would have a great impact on social, political and community values. Forty two years later, LTA is governed by the principles of unity, love and respect and promotes the development of the universal woman through social activism and community involvement. The concerns of Lambda Theta Alpha were the lack of unity, love and respect in our community. They created a sisterhood where women could feel a sense of belonging and have a support system our community did not provide. The goal was to present an empowering and uplifting atmosphere that promoted confidence, professionalism, academic excellence, success and compassion. This fostered the creation of a new universal woman. Lambda Theta Alpha steered away from traditional Latina roles and created a new role for women to take on that pushed for a new ideal in society: women’s success and empowerment. Lambda Theta Alpha was established as an academic sorority made to promote education for...

Statement Of Purpose: Delta Sigma Theta Sorority

...I am interested in membership in Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. because the sorority has a unique sisterhood. Because there is a great need for resourceful services in the black communities, I would like to be associated with an organization that is committed to sisterhood and providing assistance to others. My desire to become a part of the sisterhood began when I was in the sixth grade, after receiving the Highest Average Award from Tuskegee Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. My interest became stronger after I received the Scholarship Award when I was in the twelfth grade. My interest continued to mature throughout the years as I became aware...

Analysis Of HBCU In The Film Stomp The Yard, Directed By Spike Lee

...What is an HBCU? HBCU, stands for Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Are there any movies that revolve HBCU? Some movies include; “School Daze,” a musical comedy drama film directed by Spike Lee and another movie is “Stomp the Yard,” a dance drama film directed by Sylvain White. Both movies have an ample amount of conflict in the plot, whether it is being internal or external. During the movie “School Daze,” there is conflict in fraternities and sororities on who can join and who is forbidden to join at Mission College in rural Georgia. The women on campus are separated into two groups, the Wannabes, which are the lighter, curlier-haired sisters (posers) and the Jigaboos, who are the darker, more natural-haired women on campus....

Influence on Reference Groups

...specific situation (p.227). Groups may be classified according to a number of variables. Four criteria are particularly useful: membership, strength of social tie, type of contact, and attraction. Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is a private, non-profit organization whose purpose is to provide assistance and support through established programs in local communities throughout the world. A sisterhood of more than 200,000 predominately Black college educated women, the Sorority currently has over 900 chapters located in the United States, England, Japan (Tokyo and Okinawa), Germany, the Virgin Islands, Bermuda, the Bahamas and the Republic of Korea. The Sorority was founded in 1913 by 22 students at Howard University. These young women wanted to use their collective strength to promote academic excellence; to provide scholarships; to provide support to the underserved; educate and stimulate participation in the establishment of positive public policy; and to highlight issues and provide solutions for problems in their communities (Delta Sigma Theta, 2010). Delta Sigma Theta’s website is about heritage. This site speaks volumes about how these women wanted to be a part of an organization that consists of excellence. These women have a lifetime membership within the sorority. The influence that this organization has, as well as the site, is remarkable. The information on this site will allow younger women that have the desire to go to college and be a part of an organization that...

...Content A fraternity (Latin frater : "brother") is a brotherhood, although the term sometimes connotes a distinct or formal organization and sometimes a secret society. A fraternity (or fraternal organization) is an organized society of men associated together in an environment of companionship and brotherhood; dedicated to the intellectual, physical, and social development of its members. History There are known fraternal organizations which existed as far back as ancient Greece and in the Mithraic Mysteries of ancient Rome. Analogous institutions developed in the late medieval period called confraternities, which were lay organizations allied to the Catholic Church. Some were groups of men and women who were endeavoring to ally themselves more closely with the prayer and activity of the Church; Others were groups of tradesmen, which are more commonly referred to as guilds. These later confraternities evolved into purely secular fraternal societies, while the ones with religious goals continue to be the format of the modern Third Orders affiliated with the mendicant orders. The development of modern fraternal orders was especially dynamic in the United States, where the freedom to associate outside governmental regulation is expressly sanctioned in law. There have been hundreds of fraternal organizations in the United States, and at the beginning of the 20th century the number of memberships equaled the number of adult males. (Due to multiple memberships, probably only 50%...
