The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian; Ban It?

...Some parents even go as far as to banning books for their controversial content. Books such as The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie has been banned from many high schools. The story is about Arnold Spirit Jr. who lives on the Spokane Indian Reservation and endures many challenges while searching for hope. Although The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian remains banned from some high school for its “unsuitable content,” it should actually be added to the curriculum instead. The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian should not be banned for it’s positive messages. In the chapter “How To Fight Monsters,” Junior stands up to Roger who had been bullying him: “Did you know that Indians are living proof that n****** f*** buffalo?...that was the most racist thing I’d ever heard in my life...So I punched Roger in the face...I felt brave all of a sudden...I was telling the world I was no longer a human target.” (Alexie64-65). Teens should be able to read this book in school because it reveals an inspiring story of how a weak boy with health deficiencies overcomes a larger worldwide problem: Bullying. Maybe violence isn’t always the answer but what is there to make of the situation when another option of salvation isn’t given. Banning this book would deprive young readers from an encouraging and uprising novel. Many people argue that The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian should indeed be banned in high schools for its violent content...

...to corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely” Essay “Power tends to corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely.” Over time this statement has been changed and interpreted into its own meaning. Some say power does not corrupt it only attracts the corruptible, however, past events have given proof to dispute that theory. Power corrupts absolutely. This can be seen as we look back at previous leaders, for example: Louis XIV of France, Henry the Second of the Roman Empire, Katherine the Great, Joseph Stalin, Mao Zedong, and Adolf Hitler. These names all have something in common, they were leaders, but unfortunately, power got to their heads and they were corrupted by their lifestyles and position of power. Some of the most brutal and powerful acts have happened when these names have been reigning over us. Given this, the point I am addressing in my essay is ‘how leaders corrupt absolutely and why’. Leadership is at its core, all about power and influence; however, there is a distinction between two types of power, socialized and personalized power. Socialized power is used to benefit others, and personalized power is used for personal gain. Most power that evolves starts out as wanting to help others but once the realization sets in that they can help themselves more, power starts to be used for personal gain. Examples of this have happened in history as dictators started out with good intentions but got corrupted absolutely because they became consumed by the obsession...

Animal Farm

...“Absolute power… corrupts absolutely” How is this explored in Animal farm and film Antz To a large extent absolute power… corrupts absolutely. Total control perverts governments unequivocally, as the consequences of power versus powerlessness are explored. Composers have used varied literary and film techniques to highlight totalitarianism, the abuse of power and propaganda. Animal Farm and Antz firmly demonstrate this. Absolute power corrupts absolutely. In Animal Farm satire is used to demonstrate the impacts of totalitarianism. The faults of the government system dictating Manor Farm are exposed as being a totalitarian dictatorship; echoing the effects of the 1917 Russian Revolution. Napoleon as well as Snowball compose “The Seven Commandments” for all animals to follow. However power gets to Napoleon and he chases away Snowball to have complete control. His psyche becomes corrupted with the leadership and simultaneously all the pigs, go against “The Seven Commandments”. Biblical allusions of the Commandments are used to emphasise the pig’s outrageous behavior where satire is used to reflect how they obtain absolute power and in becoming corrupted. This pretty much echoes the human condition! Moreover, total control perverts governments unequivocally. This is illustrated via the use of allegory portraying the abuse of power. Animal Farm is an allegory depicting the Russian Revolution in a more childish yet ominous manner. Power was abused during the Russian Revolution...

...Decision Support Systems 24 Ž1998. 29–43 An empirical study on consumer acceptance of products in electronic markets: a transaction cost model Ting-Peng Liang ) , Jin-Shiang Huang 1 Department of Information Management, National Sun Yat-sen UniÕersity, Kaohsiung, Taiwan Abstract Electronic commerce is gaining much attention from researchers and practitioners. Although increasing numbers of products are being marketed on the web, little effort has been spent on studying what product is more suitable for marketing electronically and why. In this research, a model based on the transaction cost theory is developed to tackle the problem. It is assumed that customers will go with a channel that has lower transactional costs. In other words, whether a customer would buy a product electronically is determined by the transaction cost of the channel. The transaction cost of a product on the web is determined by the uncertainty and asset specificity. An empirical study involving eight-six Internet users was conducted to test the model. Five products with different characteristics Žbook, shoes, toothpaste, microwave oven, and flower. were used in the study. The results indicate that Ž1. different products do have different customer acceptance on the electronic market, Ž2. the customer acceptance is determined by the transaction cost, which is in turn determined by the uncertainty and asset specificity, and Ž3. experienced shoppers are concerned more about the uncertainty...

Animal Testing Research Paper

...For example, Researchers at McMaster University confirms that, “about 95 percent of experimental drugs deemed safe and effective in tests on animals fail in human trials because they don’t work or turn out to be dangerous.” This study proves that in the process of animal testing the drug may seem successful in animals but it may work totally different in a human's body, in a way that might hurt the person but scientists do not see that in the animal testing. In his article, “Animal Testing is Outdated, Imperfect” Ryan Ballinger points out that, “Some medicine that is tested on animals may harm them but help us.This can be misleading and cloud our ability to find a cure for a disease. For example, aspirin is dangerous to some animals, but it helps relieve headaches in humans and provides other benefits.” The essence of Ryan's argument is that if we were to test some the most common medicines that people use today on animals and it came out with a negative affect, we may have never found several of the medicines humans use that result in a good outcome. Julie Radcliff, a San Diego resident writes, "I have a hard...

The Google Dance

...If you ask any experienced Search Engine Optimization specialist then they will tell you that one of the banes of their life in the past was the ‘Google Dance’. Every Search Engine Optimization expert dreaded it. They absolutely loathed finding that their website would jump up and down the search engine results seemingly at random on an almost daily basis. I am sure that many parties were held when it finally died. It seems as though it is back now, which means you can look forward to seeing your website bounce up and down those searches again. So why is the Google Dance a bad thing? Well, it makes it very hard to analyse what you are doing right and what you are doing wrong. It occurs due to small changes in the ranking algorithms. It can be very difficult to determine where you are located in the web searches as a result of this. It can then be very hard to change your campaign around so you actually end up with a stable position. Those that go through the Google Dance may often find that it takes many weeks for the position in the search engines to stabilize a little bit. During this time they will be unable to make any real changes to their campaign through fear that something could go wrong and they get stuck in the Google Dance limbo. Thankfully the latest incarnations of the Google Dance seems to be less heavy than previous versions, and hopefully it is going to stay that way! One of the main reasons as to why these sites have bounced up and down the searches is because...

...my life, but my life itself. My interest in science came from my experiences with animals from as early as I can remember. Something interesting that I have learned about science in my time at Whitney M. Young Magnet High School is that it is limitless; or as once stated by Carl Sagan, “Somewhere, something incredible is waiting to be known.” Science fits into my future goals absolutely. My interest in science came from my experiences with animals from as early as I can remember. To this day I have had practically every pet available at pet retail stores, as popular as my first pet; a cat, to as exotic as my current pets; a miniature macaw, a ball python, a house gecko, and more. Because my interest in science came from my experiences with animals from as early as I can remember, science always has been, is, and will be not only a part of my life, but my life itself. Something interesting that I have learned about science in my time at Whitney M. Young Magnet High School is that it is limitless; or as once stated by Carl Sagan, “Somewhere, something incredible is waiting to be known.” To this day there are unanswered questions including “Who?”, “What?”, “When?”, “Where?”, “Why?”, “How?”, which could potentially be answered through the experimental design. House On Mango Street Comparison

...by Sandra Cisneros, follows a young girl named Esperanza through her coming of age. The Absolutely True Story of a Part-Time Indian, written by Sherman Alexie, also follows their young protagonist, Junior, throughout his coming of age. The setting, conflict, and characterization of both novels intertwine and build up one another. The final picture created in each book, once these three aspects come together, have little differences; and overall leave the reader with a similar take away. Mango Street, the setting of The House On Mango Street is a poor neighborhood. The setting of The Absolutely True Story of a Part-Time Indian, is an indian reservation, which is also impoverished. The state of poverty in this indian reservation is shown when the author writes, “My school and my tribe are so poor and sad that we have to study from the same dang books our parents studied from. That is absolutely the saddest thing in the world.” (Alexie 31). In the quote the author is describing the moment Junior opened up his geometry book and saw his mother’s name written on the cover. The fact that both settings are poor expose...
