Janice Galloway's “this much is constant” is a testament to adults who have let out all their bottled up issues in the form of crime. Through her choice of descriptive words, she hints at the fact that the protagonist may have revisited her childhood home, only to murder her mother.
The protagonist's feelings start to be revealed on the first page when she talks about how fear and wonder are constants, meaning that even though all the fearful and wonderful things that happened to her have long passed, they were still fresh in her mind, staying with her for eternity. The reader discovers that she has the longing to accomplish something as she says, “Determination is never outgrown; only with fear and wonder, adapted, reviewed, refined.” (p169) This can be interpreted as the protagonist had wanted to do something in her childhood, and that desire had never outgrown her, it had just been more refined to a point in her adulthood where she could conceivably execute her plan. She says, “Fear is never outgrown...,” (p169) meaning that even though she now has the plan to go along with her determination, she is still as fearful as the child she used to be. Her fear seems to stem specifically from this home, as she talks about how home is where bones grate against each other, signifying conflict, and as many child psychologists will say, a home with much conflict is the devil's workshop inside a child's mind.
On the second page, there is an interesting juxtaposition in that the formatting of the text is quite unusual. Instead of the usual text where all lines start and end at the same point, Galloway purposely makes each line contain only one or two words where they are lined on top of each other, giving the impression of falling, or more specifically, the protagonist falling deeper and deeper into her
Mundlapudi 2 plot to kill her mother. It seems like she is brought back to reality when there is a normally formatted line that says, “ Mother's red lipstick on a crocheted mat,” (p170). This one line snaps her back to reality as she sees her dead mother's lipstick on the floor, signifying a physical struggle. She stays in the moment only for a short time, only to continue to fall until she remembers the room the is in.
She talks about the room as if it is some contagious disease and she can not touch it. She says, “You need to be careful or you leave marks. Tell-tale marks.” The only circumstance in which someone would not want to leave any marks on a glass window is so they do not leave any fingerprints, and the only reason someone would want to do that is because they have committed some crime and they do not want to be apprehended. The fingerprints, or the so-called, “Tell-tale marks,” (p170) would want to be hidden from any law enforcement that will eventually end up at the house searching for the protagonist's mother.
As she moves through her house, she arrives in her mother's room. She finds makeup, she says, “bits of make-up glimmer as though through murky water. Mother's make-up. Scarlet.” (p170) It can be argued that the mother's make-up had just fallen in some murky water, but the fact that the murky water glimmers and is scarlet, draws the conclusion that it is in fact the mothers blood. The remnants of make-up in the murky water could also be signs of a struggle between the mother and daughter during their fight.
Beside her mother's bed, she relives a nostalgic moment when she rearranges her mother's magazines, just like the times when she was young. She says, “Even after all this practice, it makes you uneasy, putting them back and hoping you haven't left smears on the lenses, a fingerprint.”(p172) The uneasiness she refers to could have stemmed from her youth due to an abusive mother. The fact that she is trying not to leave a fingerprint supports the argument that she has just murdered her mother and she is trying not to leave any evidence to prove it. She is still dazed, confused and is just wandering around her old home, interacting with pieces of her past.
Mundlapudi 3
In the TV room, she looks at the carpet and the 'falling' in Galloway's writing returns as the protagonist says, “Look at the carpet. No-body is down there. There is nobody down there.” (p173) The second sentence in that quotation is rather interesting as the word nobody is separated into no and body, hinting at the fact that she is trying to convince herself that she did not kill her own mother and that there actually might be a dead body beneath the floor. Another reason this makes sense is due to the fact that the word 'body' is contained in the 'falling' type writing, meaning that the body was actually physically put or was thrown into a place underneath the floor. The protagonist continues to talk about how, “You can jump on the floor all night and disturb nothing. No one will tell you to stop.” (p173) This is a reminder that now that her mother is dead, she can do whatever she likes and no one can tell her otherwise. She then looks at the corner of the room and spots her, “sensible straps,” (p173) which is an odd name for her hairnet. In this case though, it makes sense as strands of hair can be used as DNA evidence to identify murder suspects. It would be only 'sensible', for a female assailant to wear one during a murder to prevent hair loss during a struggle, and prevent further condemnation by the law.
She spots a divan big enough that if it was open, it would fill almost the whole room. When she first sees the divan, she calls it a, “red divan,” (p174) but she later says, “There are spots through the redness if you concentrate, different colours: yellow ochre, olive green, steel blue, albino-flesh white, circled with a thin line of grainy black.” (p174) During a murder, the victim can lose a lot of blood, and in this case, the protagonist's mother could have hemorrhaged during her assault, leaving blood all over the sofa, giving it the 'red' look, with the original colours underneath the heavy coat of congealed blood.
She talks about the dead mouse underneath the sink that she discovered when she was a child and she seems repulsed by the sight of the dead rodent with a spike going through it's neck. She says, “don't look now. Don't. For now, it doesn't matter.”(p176) The way she says it makes it seem
Mundlapudi 4 like the mouse symbolizes her dead mother; lifeless, with a possible skewer through her neck, and she is reminded of the gruesome crime she just committed. From looking underneath the sink, she immediately turns to look at the ceiling, it seems, to avert her gaze away from her dead mother.
Again, after looking at the ceiling, she immediately thinks about the floor when she says, “Mother is under the floorboards.”(p176) Her mother would not be under the floorboards if she was alive. The only logical conclusion is that her daughter killed her and then disposed of her under the floorboards, hence the daughter trying to convince herself earlier that there was nobody down there. The biggest clue that the protagonist murdered her mother was the, “Dettol off the stairs” (p176) and the, “Iodine.” (p176) These two chemicals are used to sterilize objects and living tissue. If the daughter in-fact murdered her mother, then it made sense that she was trying to get rid of all biological evidence of her presence. A thorough cleaning with the use of iodine and Dettol can rid any area of any fingerprints, and skin cells contaminated.
After a murder, the best way to get rid of evidence is to get rid of the murder weapon and the victim's body. The protagonist talks about how, “Before it is completely dark, mother's slippers soles will begin dragging like corpses on the stone steps...”(p176) This could be referencing the disposal of the body; at dark, when there are a lot less potential witnesses outside. It seems like she is about to dispose of the body when the 'falling' language starts again, signifying the protagonist's eyes lowering to the dead body. She says, “Through the s-shaped slits, her eyes. Her pupils are black holes. Watching back.”(p177) This is the nail in the coffin. Previously, the protagonist talks about how her mother is underneath the floorboards. Now she is actually looking at her dead mother that she killed through the s-shaped slits.Research has proven that the mannerisms and behaviour of an individual have been finalized by the age of 15. For that reason only, it is why adults have a harder time learning something new than a child. A childhood lived in turmoil can cause a small ripple at the moment, but over time, this ripple grows exponentially to a tidal wave that will destroy anything in its path.

The film is not only an animated comedy; it holds deep sociological theory within its plot. Many of the major themes and concepts of the movie can be viewed through the lens of the famous theorist Karl Marx. Marx’s theory is famous for focusing on how society functions. In particular he concerns himself with how capitalism, the working class, and the revolutions create problems in our society. My paper will analyze how Marxian theory and concepts fit into major climactic scenes of the film. The film revolves around the protagonist Filk, a worker ant. The colony is being oppressed by a group of grasshoppers and their leader Hopper. The grasshoppers claim they will provide protection as long as the ants provide the food supply. When the ants cannot supply the food for the grasshoppers, Hopper demands the ants to produce twice as much food as they did before. As a result, the ants will not have enough food to store up for themselves. Filk then travels to recruit warrior bugs to help the ants fight off the grasshoppers. According to Marx, this would free the colony from the constant oppression of the grasshoppers...

“on Coming Home” – Joan Didion

...“On Coming Home” – Joan Didion In this essay Joan Didion tried to compare and contrast life in the two separate places and realities she called home; The home of her birth and the home of her marriage which are totally different. Didion’s style is mainly that of storytelling. In her attempt to connect her two lives and show how difficult it was to reconnect to the home of her childhood, Didion takes the reader through a roller coster of rhythms. Note how she omits the use of conjunctions between words or phrases to produce a hurried rhythm, at another instance she over used the conjunction “and” in quick succession making the words feel like they are bouncing off the walls, and quickly returns to standard sentence structure to slow the pace. Didion seems to pay attention to details and dates as she described the content of the cupboard she tried to clean out; a bathing suit she wore when she was seventeen, a letter of rejection, three teacups and the 1954 photograph. Her tone mostly conveyed frustration. Frustration about losing and missing the home of her birth, her family, whose ways she had grown so use to; Frustration about the husband who is very much unlike them, unlike her. Frustration about the decay all around; physical and social. This frustration so real, she even spoke about them in the present tense. Interesting as it was, this essay left me totally exhausted and overwhelmed. How It Feels to Be Colored Me – Zora Neale Hurston What an overwhelming relief and...

Role

...Technology in this age is putting a spin on how an organization establishes and cultivates an ongoing mutually beneficial relationship with its publics. Social media is an evolving, ever present catalyst in the communication realm of public relations. Public Relations in its earliest years, the era of Antiquity, acknowledged the importance of public opinion, but their scope was limited to an arm's reach of their publics. Social media has become both a window and a bridge to the public relations practitioners', by enabling them to interconnect the internal objectives of the organization with the constant changing externalities. In the arena of public relations, an array of hats is essential to effectively carry the overall message of an organization into a stage of visible outcome. An organization's public relations department amongst many other tasks must build awareness, research and analyze public attitudes and perceptions, strategize, and implement crisis plans. Social media provides a way for organizations to do these things on a scale not known in earlier times when messages had to first bypass the filter of the media "gatekeepers". As stated by Rupert Murdoch, "Technology is shifting the power away from the editors, the publishers, the establishment, and the media elite. Now it's the people who are in control" (p. 1). Social media as defined by Wikipedia is "an umbrella term for the various activities that integrate technology, and social interaction" (p. 1). This includes...

Lit Crit: the Sun Also Rises

...along with this unique style, we see an unusual structure demonstrated throughout the novel. In William L. Vance’s “Implications of Form in The Sun Also Rises,” he addresses this structure and analyzes the writing much deeper than most would while reading. William L. Vance’s analysis focuses on the “episodic and circular aspects of the structure.” This is very evident for readers to realize after reading of the characters common actions. In the life of Jake, Robert, and the other characters of the novel it seems as though they follow the same routine from day to day. These routines include “drinking and bullfight watching for all, sex for some, and fishing for the rest. And talk and self-torture.” The role of relationships in the novel is brought up by William Vance. The character’s relationships are what illustrate the circular motion of events. The relationship between Jake and Brett is brought up as one of the few constants. William Vance states that their special love for each other is almost always existent no matter what is going on in either of the two’s life. The constant low of society is also brought up as constant. Throughout the novel it seems as though the characters never take a break from their drinking. William Vance uses Robert Cohn as the prime example of this misery due to his constant desire for Brett. His attraction to her is very intense to the point that “he appears ridiculous.” Robert’s reoccurring feelings for Brett fit the circular and constant motions...

Essay On David Sedaris

...American writer David Sedaris is a distinguished person. He has nine “essay collections,” most of which are very commercially successful. It all started with “SantaLand Diaries,” an essay that was the spark to his flaring fame. He is the second of six children and was brought up in North Carolina but has been living in Europe for a long time with his boyfriend Hugh Hamrick. His works receive critical acclaim and adoration from readers and were nominated to and won several awards as well (Wikipedia, “David Sedaris”). Sedaris’ writings are personal essays, which should provide great insight into his personality due to their autobiographical nature. An important feature of him that manifests clearly in his writings and interviews is hiding his weaknesses, which is a part of his perfectionist tendencies. Sedaris always tries to make things funnier than they really are. It is as if he is wearing a mask, a funny one, so that whatever bothers him wouldn’t leak through his façade and reveal his vulnerability to the world. An example of this was obvious in his interview for Dutch TV. He mentioned that his “youngest sister committed suicide” and the devastating effect this had on his family. However, he added that he included funny details in a story he wrote about this incident and his relationship with his deceased sibling. (Brands, “David...

(Your answer should be more qualitative than quantitative!) The following factors weave into the risks and attributes of the company from the creditors’ point of view: A. UST had seven pending health related lawsuits at the end of 1998. The outcomes of these suits are uncertain. Despite the major Medicaid state settlements, lawmakers are expected to continue to push for new laws to combat youth tobacco use. Other litigation against tobacco companies is expected to continue, especially suits filed by individuals. Nursing

...Job Analysis Paper Psych 435 February 28, 2011 Nursing Job Analysis A job analysis is a process used to determine and identify the details of a specific job requirement or duties and the significance of these duties for the given job (Spector, 2008). In a job analysis there are also judgments about the data collected on-the-job (Fine & Crinshaw, 1999). It is also important to remember that a job analysis is conducted for the job position and not the person. The data collected for a job analysis comes from current questionnaires or interviews, the specification and description of the job (Spector, 2008). The main purpose of a job analysis is to document and establish the job relatedness of employment procedures such as interviewing, selection, training, compensation, and performance appraisals (Fine & Crinshaw, 1999). In this paper a job analysis will be performed on the position of a registered nurse. It will evaluate different performance appraisal methods, explain a variety of benefit and vulnerability of performance appraisals, and also evaluate the reliability and validity of a job analysis. To become a registered nurse there are some requirements. The student needs t o be a high school graduate or GED equivalent. This would be considered the proper basic training along with the pre-requisites required from the college. Economic Thought

...Economic Thought In this essay I plan on discussing three schools of economic thought. The first school I will be discussing is the Keynesian school of economic thought followed by, the Monetarist and concluding with the Austrian school of economic thought. Throughout this essay I will explain and discuss the key components, philosophy and history of each of the following. I also plan on discussing how each school is accepted today in society and what the future of these schools hold. To concluded the essay, I will elaborate on which school I believe is more relevant in todays society and which economic school of thought I believe is best for our society today. The Keynesian school of economic thought, is a theory based on total spending in an economy, and the potential results on inflation and input. Keynesian believe that aggregate demand is highly influenced by several economic factors and decisions. Some of those decisions include; monetary, fiscal policies as well as changes in aggregate demand. "According to Keynesian theory, changes in aggregate demand, whether anticipated or unanticipated, have their greatest short-run effect on real output and employment, not on prices". Summarizing the previous quote, Keynesians in general believe that the short run can't infer what can or shall occur in the long run. In todays society many people would agree that prices and wages increase promptly with any sudden change in supply and demand, but that is a different case for...
