We as 21st century human beings have been breed with television. Some of us live and breathe television. Because it is such a big part of our lives, the way we send news, sports, teach our children, entertain, and even spend money, it should not be surprising television plays such a big role in the analytical perspective of sociological theories. I will attempt to explain how each approach, functionalist view, conflict view, and interactionist view, view society, the individual, social order, and social change.
Starting with functionalist view is everyone having their place or purpose in society. Everyone and everything has a function. Functionalists believe that society depends on these certain functions to serve its people: * Television plays a crucial role not only on a local level, but on a national and even international level of news. On an international level we receive news about war, other countries, and international disasters. On a local level we receive local crimes, weather, and political news. * Television programs Teach important learning skills to our children as well as exposes adults to information they would never be able to see otherwise. * Television plays in a big part in bringing together not only people but whole countries by showing important celebrations and events, but by also showing catastrophes such as 9-11. * Television contributes to society economically by promoting and advertising (commercials) but allowing society to be able to order directly through shopping networks to their house.

Conflict view coincides with Marxism. They believe and standby the belief that the social order is based on coercion and exploitation. Conflict theorists argue that television intensifies many of the discrimination or division of race, social class, gender, and even ethnicity: * Television is a form of business in which the monetary value is worth more than the programming quality. * Television has a disturbingly overwhelming number of white, male, and rich CEOs and bosses; because of this observation television leaves out the lives of the working middle class, Hispanics, LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender) community, African American, and the disabled. * Television dictates most outcomes of political parties by saturating the television with political propaganda. Usually the one with most money wins. * By allowing other countries to watch U.S. broadcasted television shows, we put up a facade to those countries which make them culturally and economically depend on the United States

Finally Interactionist view focuses on the symbols used by a society to indicate its value, morals and development. Interactionist examines television on the micro level by focusing on how day-to-day social behavior is shaped by television: * Television is used incorrectly for our children, instead of people using it to teach or entertain for short periods of time, they become their baby-sitter * Communities come together because of shared interest in television network programs, and viewing habits such as World Series or the Golden Globes. * The non-stop violence and terror being broadcasted on the news and all programming instills fears and helps build aggression and animosity toward others. * Television is used as a political tool of propaganda to manipulate reality to either benefit them or their cause.
Regardless of how different or similar functionalists, conflict, and interactionist theorist are they all must agree that television is not just an object on entertainment, but television is a tool used by society to manipulate human beings to their liking. Television helps show society what’s new in their culture and is still a wonderful base of study for sociologist.

...C h a p t e r 1 Prewriting GETTING STARTED (OR SOUP-CAN LABELS CAN BE FASCINATING) For many writers, getting started is the hardest part. You may have noticed that when it is time to begin a writing assignment, you suddenly develop an enormous desire to straighten your books, water your plants, or sharpen your pencils for the fifth time. If this situation sounds familiar, you may find it reassuring to know that many professionals undergo these same strange compulsions before they begin writing. Jean Kerr, author of Please Don’t Eat the Daisies, admits that she often finds herself in the kitchen reading soup-can labels—or anything—in order to prolong the moments before taking pen in hand. John C. Calhoun, vice president under Andrew Jackson, insisted he had to plow his fields before he could write, and Joseph Conrad, author of Lord Jim and other novels, is said to have cried on occasion from the sheer dread of sitting down to compose his stories. To spare you as much hand-wringing as possible, this chapter presents some practical suggestions on how to begin writing your short essay. Although all writers must find the methods that work best for them, you may find some of the following ideas helpful. But no matter how you actually begin putting words on paper, it is absolutely essential to maintain two basic ideas concerning your writing task. Before you write a single sentence, you should always remind yourself that 1. You have some valuable ideas to tell your reader,...

...INTRODUCTION TO MACROECONOMICS E202 $ ¥ Dr. David A. Dilts Department of Economics Doermer School of Business and Management Sciences Indiana-Purdue University-Fort Wayne June 1, 1993 Revisions: May 1994, December 1995, July 1996, November, 2000, May 2003, May 2006 PREFACE This Course Guide was developed in part because of the high cost of college textbooks, and in part, to help organize students’ studying by providing lecture notes together with the reading assignments. This Guide is provided to the student online at the Department of Economics website. Jayla Heller, the Department’s secretary has been kind enough to go through all of the frustration and hard work to put the guide in the appropriate format and put it online. To her goes my gratitude. The department, neither school, nor the professor make anything whatsoever from this Guide. In fact, the department’s budget and the professor’s own resources are used in the writing of the Guide, and the numerous draft copies that are produced in the revisions of this document. Like the sign in the Mom and Pop bait shop on Big Barbee Lake says, “This is a non-profit organization, wasn’t planned to be – it just worked out that way.” Well, actually it was planned to be a non-profit enterprise in this case. The professor also wishes to acknowledge the fact that several students have proposed changes, improvements, caught errors, and helped to make this document more useful as a learning tool. Naturally, any errors of omission...

...Outline: RESEARCH 1) NATURE AND SCOPE OF RESEARCH 1.1) Definition – purposive, systematic and scientific process of gathering, analyzing, classifying, organizing, presenting and interpreting data for the solution of a problem, for prediction, for invention, for the discovery of truth, or for the expansion or verification of existing knowledge, all for the preservation and improvement of the quality of human life. 1.1.1) History of Research Historical records reveal that there is no written document on the beginning of business research as an organized business activity, but this is definitely of modern origin. During the Middle Ages, the merchant families of Fugger and Rothschild prospered in part because their organizations enabled them to get information before their competitors did. These studies were unsystematic, but considered to be well organized during that time. In 1879, more by accident than foresight, N. W. Ayer and Son conducted a crude but formal market survey, to measure markets for agricultural machineries, manufactured by Nicholas-Shepard Company. This market survey is probably the first real attempt at business research in the United States. The Curits Publishing company is generally conceived to have formed the first formal business research department with the appointment of Charles Parlin as manager of the Commercial Research Division of the Advertising Department in 1911. His original idea was that advertising space could be sold more effectively...
