The Army Crew Team
Introduction:
This case is about a frustrating situation that Colonel Stas Preczewski also known as Coach P., the coach of the Army Crew team for the United States Military Academy at West Point, who faced with total twist between his two teams. The Junior Varsity (JV) crew boat - consisting of the bottom eight rowers beat the Varsity (V) – top eight rowers, during practice and in some races. This was not supposed to happen, because of the speed, strength and coordination of the Varsity team. Coach P. had made many attempts to gather information that would help him to understand and resolve the unusual situation, but nothing had worked. One week before the culmination of the season, the National championship race, competing with over one hundred other schools, Coach P. deliberated over several options. He made a radical action that would be to acknowledge how the Junior Varsity team was better than the Varsity team. The first option was when he simply promoted the whole JV team to the Varsity boat for the race. The second option was to switch a small number of individual members of the two boats and the third option was to keep the current team members in each boat, but to try to intervene to improve the performance of the Varsity team. Facing with this problem, Coach P. held a meeting with the team members to discuss about the problems among the team.

Diagnosis:
Coach P. lacked leadership and needed to address the real problem which was no team spirit in the Varsity team but a rift between them. The members of the Varsity team didn’t cooperate with each other and there were so many problems in aspect of relationships and responsibilities. The members continued to blame the failure on each other and complaining about how bad the other one is. The team showed a lack of trust and leadership which Coach P. needed to make better, breaking their communication barrier. The Varsity team had nothing to motivate them and to gain through competition and the Junior Varsity team on the other had nothing to lose. The JV team had a great communication with each other and always addressed their win for the team. They didn’t have any conflicts between the members like the Varsity team had. The Varsity team was more a group of individuals than a team. They were lacking team spirit, which was breaking even more when the Junior Varsity team beat them in the races.

Solution:
Coach P. shouldn’t try to switch the teams, or switch individual members, because the members of the teams didn’t want to switch and the Varsity team still had an advantage over the Junior Varsity team in strength and could still beat the JV boat. Coach P. has to pay attention on the main problem that the Varsity team members were acting as individuals, not as a team. So the solution is to improve the relationship of the Varsity team and focus on their improvement as a team, not as individuals, because the Varsity team had better physical capabilities and skills than the Junior Varsity team. Coach p. should resolve their anger using different techniques. Let them fight with each other to reduce the anger they felt towards each other, so they can start addressing the problem and talk about it. Communication is the main key in a relationship and trust is the main goal in a team. So to have trust you got to have an open communication and then you can have team work.

Conclusion:
The problem in this case is the frustrated situations that Coach P. is dealing with. As we said the main issue is the lack of communications between the members of the Varsity team. This team showed lack of trust and leadership, which Coach P. needed to make better, breaking their communication barrier. The Varsity team had nothing to motivate them and to gain through competition and the Junior Varsity team on the other had nothing to lose. Coach P. has to pay attention on the main problem that the Varsity team members were acting as individuals, not as a team. When the Varsity team will have the communication which was lost and the team work also, they will be the team which Coach P. was trying to get by selecting them as the top eight rowers in the Academy.
