Puşi în faţa unor confruntări interpersonale, oamenii tind să aibă anumite reacţii. Acestea reflectă gradele diferite de cooperare (adică efortul fiecăruia de a satisface interesele celuilalt) şi de autoimpunere (efortul fiecăruia de a-şi satisface propriile interese). Ele pot fi clasificate în cinci categorii: 1.Confruntare (reprimare,victorie/înfrângere) 2.Colaborare (victorie/victorie) 3.Compromis 4.Evitare (abandon) 5.Acomodare (convertirea coflictului în şansă)

1.Confruntare (reprimare, forţare, victorie/înfrângere) - rechinul
Rechinul încearcă să îşi domine adversarii prin a-i face să accepte soluţia lui în cazul unui conflict. Scopurile sale personale sunt sunt dominante în raport cu relaţiile interpersonale, pe care le sacrifică foarte uşor. Caută să îşi atingă ţelurile cu orice preţ. Nu îl interesează nevoile celorlalţi. Nu îl interesează dacă ceilalţi îl plac sau îl acceptă. Rechinul crede că un conflict se câştigă atunci când o parte învinge iar cealaltă este înfrântă. El vrea să fie câştigătorul cu orice preţ. “Victoria”, îi dă rechinului un sentiment de mândrie şi de realizare personală. Înfrângerea îi dă un sentiment de slăbiciune, neadaptare şi ratare. Încearcă să câştige prin atac, copleşire sau intimidare.

2. Colaborare (victorie/victorie) - bufniţa
Bufniţa preţuieşte în egală măsură scopurile personale cât şi relaţiile cu ceilalţi. Ea vede conflictele ca pe probleme ce trebuie rezolvate şi caută soluţii care să satisfacă atât interesele personale cât şi cele ale celorlalţi. Bufniţa vede conflictul ca pe o metodă de îmbunătăţire a relaţiilor prin reducarea tensiunii dintre două persoane sau grupuri. Încearcă să pornească o discuţie pentru a identifica conflictul ca problemă. Bufniţa nu este mulţumită până când nu găseşte o soluţie care să satisfacă ambele părţi.

3. Compromis - vulpea
Vulpea este interesată atât de scopurile personale cât şi de relaţiile cu ceilalţi. ea tinde însă să facă compromisuri, renunţând parţial la scopurile ei convingând cealaltă parte să procedeze la fel. Într-o situaţie conflictuală soluţia vulpii este va fi ca fiecare parte implicată să piardă şi să câştige câte ceva. Este capabilă să renunţe temporar la scopurile ei pentru a depăşi situaţia de criză.

4. Evitare (abandon) – broasca ţestoasă
Broasca ţestoasă se retrage în carapacea ei pentru a evita conflictul. Ea renunţă la scopurile şi relaţiiile ei personale. Stă departe de zonele de conflict şi evită persoanele care crează sau întreţine stări conflictuale. Broasca ţestoasă crede că nu există speranţă în încercarea de a rezolva un conflict. Se simte neajutorată. Crede că este mai bine să te retragi decât să intri într-un conflict.

5. Acomodare (convertirea coflictului în şansă) – ursuleţul
Pentru ursuleţ relaţiile interpersonale sunt foarte importante în timp ce propriile scopuri au o importanţă mai mică. Ursuleţul doreşte să fie plăcut şi acceptat de ceilalţi. el consideră conflictele ca pe ceva ce trebuie evitat în favoarea armoniei şi mai crede că oamenii nu pot discuta în contradictoriu fără a afecta relaţiile dintre ei. Se teme că dacă conflictul continuă cineva are de suferit şi asta va compromite relaţiile cu acea persoană. De aceea încearcă cu orice preţ, chiar renunţând la scopurile personale, să aplaneze conflictul din teama de a nu periclita relaţiile interpersonale.
