Those Terrible Tectonics: Earthquake In Balochistan

On September 24, 2013 at around 4:30 pm, an earthquake that the United States Geological Survey clocked at 7.7 on the Richter scale jolted Awaran in Balochistan. The shocks are said to have been felt as far away as New Delhi. Over 400 people have been reported to have died and thousands have become homeless just a few weeks before the harsh Baloch winter strikes.
Balochistan have suffered from earthquakes before. In 1935 a huge earthquake almost completely flattened its capital Quetta, and in 1945 an earthquake so large it toppled over buildings which resulted in death, and even caused a tsunami. So, what makes Balochistan to prone to earthquakes?
Balochistan is situated near three tectonic plates; the India Plate, the Eurasia Plate and the Arabia Plate. When these plates rub against each other they create friction, which can result in earthquakes and/or volcanoes. In this case it was an earthquake, so Balochistan is near a conservative plate margin.
How do earthquakes happen? When the tectonic plates are sliding past each other, parts get locked together, creating enormous tension. Suddenly, rock gives way and the plates lurch forward. Tension and waves of energy called seismic waves travel in all directions. The earthquake is the vibration the seismic waves cause. Where the rock gives way is the focus, directly above this point on the earth’s surface is called the epicentre. While the rock settles into its new position smaller earthquakes are produced, called aftershocks.
This specific earthquake was measured a 7.7 on the Richter Scale. This means that most buildings were destroyed! But just how are earthquakes measured? Eathquakes are measured using seismometers, and to graph the vibrations you use a seismograph. The more the ground shakes the greater the amplitude of waves.

...event which has an adverse socio-economic impact on the human being. Alternatively, an extreme natural event, such as a cyclone, an earthquake or a flood, that is not caused by human beings. These are naturally occurring phenomena that only become hazardous due to the intervention of human infrastructure. The vulnerability of human infrastructure to destruction (risk) by a disaster is also an important factor in understanding natural hazards. The distribution and impact of natural hazards is unequal with greatest loss of life and property in the developing part of the world. This is not because of greater hazard frequency but simply because of greater vulnerability. Therefore, the people in the developing countries are at high risk than those of developed countries. Combining the risk factor the natural hazard can be defined as the probability of a change in the natural environment of a given magnitude occurring within specified time period in a given area while the associated risk is the consequent damage or loss of life, property and services. The frequency of major hazard appears to have increased since 1960 and the number of people killed each year has decreased at a rate of about 6% and the loss or property has also decreased steadily. This has taken place owing to increased awareness and better hazard management. The increase in the frequency of hazard can be assigned to such factors as better global news coverage, increasing population, increasing urbanization and increasing...

Iceland Geography

...Analysis and Impact of the Geologic Features In Iceland By: Tan Kai De Introduction Iceland is an island located in the middle of the North Atlantic and Arctic Ocean, and with a population of just over 300,000, it is the most sparsely populated country in Europe, with its people inhabiting a total land area of 103,000 square kilometers. To put that into perspective, the Netherlands is about two and a half times the area (nationsonline.org, 2015), but has nearly 60 times the population at nearly 17 million inhabitants (Countrymeters.info, 2015). This is despite the fact that the cultural history of the country can be dated back to about 800AD, and settlement occurred from 870-930AD. However, the true history of Iceland goes much beyond than that. Iceland has a rich geologic history that dates back thousands, if not millions of years, that makes it one of the most fascinating countries in the world. In this essay, we will explore the origins of Iceland from its formation to its current size, some of the unique features that Iceland has that most countries do not have, as well as a few significant geologic events in Iceland that have shaped Icelandic and even global events. Formation of Iceland Diagram 1 from classroomatsea.net Diagram 1 shows a general idea of how Iceland was formed. Iceland is situated in the centre of the Eurasian and the North American plate. The two plates move away from each other due to the magma undercurrents, due to the convection effect...

...Bp also known as British Petroleum “is one of the world's leading international oil and gas companies, providing its customers with fuel for transportation, energy for heat and light, retail services and petrochemicals products for everyday items.” This establishment has over 80 operations under its umbrella ranging from the United States to Australia. Oil companies such as BP constantly try to find the next best way to dig and find oil underneath the surface of the earth. Not only do they have well educated persons there to help measure, dig, etc., but they also have a great number of technological resources. The resources that are used include: 3D film that Geologists look at in a room called the HIVE (highly immersive visual environment). In this room, all persons that deal with finding oil come together and view this film to help determine where to drill and how successful they will be in doing so (BP). Finding oil is a science, there isn’t much guessing done without tools and maps to find it. Before there were a host of technology-based programs, oil companies had to search for oil by finding natural oil bubbles that came to surface in what is called a seapage (BP). Even then, there were no true promises that if the drilling began that they would strike gold, they just hoped that there was something deep beyond the earth’s surface. According to BP, “drilling is the only sure way to find out whether there is oil or gas down there”. There are also precautions that are...

Magically Real Fiction

...A voice cannot carry the tongue and the lips that gave it wing. Alone it must seek the ether. -Kahalil Gibran Preface December 16th, 2025 This is a book about Babu Bangladesh. This is about a man popularly known to many of us, as simply Babu. Chances are that many of you across the world encountered his name in media reports about a decade ago. International spotlights turned toward him sometime around 2005, resting on him awhile before his disappearance in 2017. Babu gained repute as a dashing environmentalist, and as an advocate of sustainable development practices in poverty stricken economies. While he is now overlooked by mainstream and gulfstream eyes, collegiate programs, left-leaning organizations, and ecological societies scattered over every continent note his initiatives. Vigilant followers might catch a glimpse of Babu’s likeness flash across the massive LED screens at U2 concerts. Thich Nhat Hanh, Arundhati Roy, and Cornel West have publicly quoted him. It is even believed that when Hillary Clinton visited Bangladesh in late 2017, she voiced strong concerns over the troubling details of Babu’s vanishing act. Female rock-star, Gwen Stefani is said to sport a tattoo on her left buttock that closely resembles Babu, but due to the artist’s weight gain between 2019 and 2022, it is difficult to confirm the likeness. In Bangladesh, Babu is remembered as a writer, politician, and as somewhat of a mystic. Depending on the nature of their interactions...

I was thirty-five at the time, four years out of law school, recently married, and generally impatient with life. A seat in the Illinois legislature had opened up, and several friends suggested that I run, thinking that my work as a civil rights lawyer, and contacts from my days as a community organizer, would make me a viable candidate. After discussing it with my wife, I entered the race and proceeded to do what every first-time candidate does: I talked to anyone who would listen. I went to block club meetings and church socials, beauty shops and barbershops. If two guys were standing on a corner, I would cross the street to hand them campaign literature. And everywhere I went, I’d get some version of the same two questions. “Where’d you get that funny name?” And then: “You seem like a nice enough guy. Why do you want to go into something dirty and nasty like politics?” I was familiar with the question, a variant on the questions asked of me years earlier, when I’d first arrived in Chicago to work in low-income neighborhoods. It signaled a cynicism...
