Three Day Road Essay In Joseph Borden’s novel Three Day Road, the differences in Elijah’s and Xavier's childhood contribute to their different attitudes in war. Their upbringing has shaped how they face situations as adults. Xavier was raised by his aunt, Niska, a majority of his childhood after his mother was unfit to care for him as an alcoholic and his father had passed when he was young. Opposed to Elijah who was raised at a residential school in Moose Factory by nuns and has no recent memories of his parents. Throughout the novel, it is evident that these factors have major impacts on the differences between Xavier and Elijah. The differences in Xavier and Elijah are shown through the value of the human life, assimilation into European …show more content…
He gets this idea from a French soldier who claimed to do this as well to keep track of his kills. Elijah tells Xavier what happened the night of the raid after he returns. He tells of jumping over the parapet and breaking the roof on the German dugout as he falls. Three German soldiers reach for their rifles as he is stuck in the roof. Elijah kills one with his revolter, smashes his war club into another’s skull and then shoots the last soldier. Then “ he turns the dead man on his stomach and removes his sharpened skinning knife from its sheath and pulls the man's hair back and removes his scalp with careful motions as simply as he would remove the skin from a pike." ( Boyden, 210) Elijah wants proof of his kills to impress others as he believes this will help gain their approval. Xavier, on the other hand, kills out of necessity, an example of this is when Thompson wakes Xavier, Elijah, Sean Patrick, McCaan, and Graves for a scouting mission to locate whether the Germans are in one of the big craters. On their mission, they find three Canadian soldiers in the crater, two of which …show more content…
An example of this is when Xavier thinks back to the day he killed the sniper. McCaan sends Elijah, Thompson, and Xavier out to no-man’s land to frisk the dead sniper. The three retrieve the sniper’s rifle and bayonet. As Thompson, Elijah, and Xavier sit together charcoaling their faces, Elijah says “Jolly good night for a little snooping, eh, Thompson?” Elijah says. Thompson shakes his head at the words, and his teeth are white almost to a glow. “You do a better British accent than a Brit”, he says.” (Boyden, 137) Elijah is willing to speak like an English man, unlike Xavier who refuses to speak the langue entirely. Lastly, Elijah’s desire to gain acceptance is also evident in his willingness to assimilate into European culture. As mentioned before, an example of this is when Xavier thinks back to the day he killed the sniper. As Thompson, Elijah and Xavier talk, Xavier thinks “He began talking this way to get the others to laugh, but he likes it now. Makes him feel respectable. He told me there’s a magic in it that protects him.” (Boyden, 137) The quote is evident that Elijah wants to feel accepted because he feels he never fit in, since he never really had a family and loved ones. By speaking with a British accent and making others laugh Elijah loses his own culture to feel as if he belongs somewhere. Unlike Elijah, Xavier holds onto his culture even if it means he is not always

Stereotypes In Professional Sports

...Body One- The first argument is athletes’ grades are sometimes based on their playing ability. A quote from the New York Times is, “An English instructor told how a football player was allowed to remain in a remedial program an extra quarter because, faculty members were told, he had scored the winning touchdown against the cross-state rival Georgia Tech.” This quote means a teacher was told a football player (one of her students) scored the winning touchdown against their rivals so he got to stay in a remedial program an extra quarter. Another quote from the New York Times is, “Another professor testified that a football player who had failed a sociology class had his grade changed, over the teacher's protest, from an F to a C. O Brother Where Art Thou Analysis

...enthusiasm to get home. For example, in “O Brother Where Art Thou” a quote states, “Everett and Penny walk arm in arm, the seven Wharvey gals behind,” this quote shows that Everett did finally get home to his family after all. In “The Odyssey”, another instance would be, “What I want and all my days I pine for is to go back to my house and see my day of homecoming,” this quote shows Odysseus longing for his home. Obviously both of these quotes show that these two characters would like to go home or have successfully gotten home. Everett and Odysseus encounter a one-eyed man/monster who has a desire to either hurt them or kill them. For example, in “The Odyssey,” a quote would be, “ Two he seized and dashed to the ground like whelps, and their brains ran out and stained the Earth,” this quote is appropriate for this topic because it says that the Cyclops basically wanted to kill...

I really need to fully use winter break to discover myself and see what I am capable of. Besides, I need to understand life as aging keeps hunting me and I have to learn on how to tolerate with people because the world has trillions of behavior in different person that I have met, I am meeting and the person that I am going to meet in my future. Before the trip started, I clear my mind from all the negative thoughts that I had in mind and brought only positive vibes with me. During the trip, I got to learn a lot about myself, learn to deal with complicated people and realize that we always need to be prepared. On the first day of my journey, I started to learn something about myself. It started with taking a flight to San Francisco. This is my first time getting on a domestic plane, alone. Actually it was my second time, but the first time was a flight from Chicago to Buffalo which my intention wasn’t for travelling. I stayed at the airport for eight hours before boarded. I used that much time to observe people around me and see myself. As I waited at the arrival door, I see there were few families were waiting for their relatives. Some of them even brought a hand-made welcome back poster for their relatives. I thought to myself, ‘It is really...

What Literacy Means to Alexie

...What does Literacy mean to Alexie? It all started out with a comic book; a superman comic book that opened up three year old Alexie’s eyes to success. Along with learning to read by himself by looking at comic books and trying to associate words with pictures came different struggles, his parent’s not being able to afford great books, spending his whole day trying to learn how to make the words become real to him, and of course the biggest struggle; his peers making fun of him for being smart. For Alexie to go through all of these struggles alone; learning to read and write must mean something more than just scanning through words on a page or writing the alphabet mixed up in different combinations, it must mean something much greater. The first thing that shows that Literacy means something more to Alexie is that it means being sufficiently educated with his writing and reading skills. Alexie’s wild adventure began with opening a comic book back when he was three years old. He had tried to associate the words and the pictures to try to teach him-self how to read. To this day, he cannot recall exactly what the comic book was, but he was indeed successful. After trying to read that comic book, Alexie wanted more, he didn’t want to learn how to read; in his mind, he had to. Alexie’s Father was an avid reader and I believe that Alexie got the idea to teach him-self to read because he wanted to be just like his father. The family was not rich; very far from it, but Alexie’s...

Critical Thinking Exercise

...critical and creative thought could have been used for a better outcome. Describe why it is important to think critically and creatively in similar situations. With an ever-increasing population, some cities are now experiencing the traffic congestion that is plaguing our roads and highways. The fast-paced lifestyles of people commuting to and from work, school, and other activities creates a dangerous potential for commuters who are anxious to get to their destination on time. Road rage is now becoming a common occurrence in some of our major cities. Los Angeles, for example, is home to hundreds of major freeways linking inner cities with suburbs. With a county population of more than nine million people (U.S Census Bureau, 2010) some drivers, specifically aggressive drivers, pose a threat to the safety of other people sharing the road ways. I have experienced these same feelings when driving. In one instance, aggressive behavior such as tailgating, cutting off, sudden braking, etc was something I have done to me and vice versa. Trying to pinpoint where the fault originated is not important as to how these road rage situations could have been avoided in the first place. A critical thinker should anticipate busy roads and plan accordingly. Most often poor planning and last minute rushing out the door is the beginning of the frustration that we face when driving. It seems to be that everyone else is taking their time while you are trying to get somewhere fast. It is imperative that...

Is a Good Man That Hard to Find?

...meanest of them sparkled.” First off, it is pretty obvious to me that the "silver-white sunlight" is supposed to be imagery the reader associates with Heaven. Beyond that, I feel there are two possible meanings to it as a whole, depending on how you interpret the meaning of the word "meanest": either they are being portrayed as cruel, or they are being portrayed as average. In the first case, the trees could almost be approximated with the Misfit in the role of Jesus. In the second case, the trees could be representative of Bailey's family. “They passed a large cotton field with five or six graves fenced in the middle of it, like a small island.” It just so happens that the Bailey family has six members: Bailey, his wife, his mother, and his three children. I feel this is an allusion to the fact that they're going to die later on. The bit about the island may also be significant. In the end, they seemed to be stranded, trapped, and surrounded on all sides by the Misfit and his men, just like an island is surrounded by water. “The grandmother said she would have done well to marry Mr. Teagarden because he was a gentleman and ... a very wealthy man.” This little bit is important to note, because it points out one of the grandmother's most crucial flaws: she values money and material comforts over love and relationships. This is also evident in the way that she later proclaims she will give all of her money to...

Arch Duke

...THE DUKE IS DEAD (Arch Duke Ferdinand) First of all we want to apologise for writing this story late. However, on the bright side we got special coverage from the Austrian-Hungarian government about the assassination of the dead Arch Duke Ferdinand. The sun shined proud during Sunday 28th in Sarajevo; the preceding days had been cool & rainy (1), Normal weather for June. However the 28th wasn’t a normal day, it was a Serbian national day and the Arch Duke had decided to inspect his military in the newly usurped country Bosnia, defying the Serbian popular opinion of gaining Bosnia or letting it be independent instead of being in Austria-Hungary’s power. After a long morning of inspecting the troops the Arch Duke and his wife Sofie was with him (because it was their anniversary) when he started his tour of the city and going to the reception at town hall, but to improve relations with the Nationalist Bosnians he decided he would ride in an open roof car and that the local police would be in charge of his security instead of his huge army waiting outside, there were only 120 available policemen and most of them were watching the Arch Duke. The main road was Apple Quay that went along river Mijacka (2). However, a group of Bosnian/Serbian Nationalists working for the Black Hand had been waiting for this opportunity for a while, all of them had Tuberculosis, therefore they had nothing to lose and also most of them were trained in Serbia. "Generally in war, the best policy is to take a state intact: to ruin it is inferior to this ....for to win one hundred victories in one hundred battles is not to acme of skill. To subdue the enemy without fighting is the acme of skills." Sun Tzu The quote above in relation to business is saying that since the goal of business is to survive and prosper, you must capture the market but not in a way that may destroy it. When I say destroy it I mean not in a way where you change the market until people won't recognize it for what it is. Apple is a company that has taken Sun Tzu strategy and has somehow made it into a company. Business Research

...00591E Last revised: February 2012 Page 1 of 10 Why reference Most of the work you produce requires referencing to demonstrate that you have researched and considered the ideas of others in researching your topic or presenting your argument. Referencing is also necessary because it prevents you from ‘plagiarising’ which can lead to an automatic fail result. Plagiarism is using someone else’s thoughts, words or ideas and writing them as if they were your own. It is technically stealing and is a breach of ethics. Referencing tells the reader where the original idea can be found. What should be referenced? Anything that you have read or heard that has influenced your writing: • A concept or idea • A paraphrased quote • A direct quote • Personal communication • Class notes • Script or screenplay • A contestable argument General knowledge does not need to be referenced, for example: Canberra is the capital of Australia. But if you read that ‘The Yass – Canberra plains were chosen because of the snow in Dalgety …’ this would have to be referenced. A contestable argument that would need to be referenced may be: It is a fact that Lady Denman, rather than the Surveyor Scrivener actually proclaimed the name Canberra. In-text referencing This is a short notation within the essay, report or written answer, indicating where the source of the information or idea can be found. • • • Always include the author’s surname, the year of publication and the...
