“Home Stay”, which is a look at the odd relationship between a Japanese-an Asian man-and the parents of his Canadian ex-wife, manages to portray a mutual incomprehension born of culture shock or imagined difference. In the plot, Jun’s deep misgivings about his place in the world are resurrected in five frozen goldfish. Through the goldfish as a hint combining Jun’s living details or behavior at Canadian home, the story descripts that Jun’s loneliness with homesick, his unadaption which he needs to be accustomed to well water, butter and no chopsticks, his inhibition and depression like he is the frozen goldfish. The family is multi-racial. Canadian couple treats Jun well, but just like a pet, an injured animal, which results from the way they deal with him is a Canadian way not a Japanese way. Jun pretends he is calm to face everything, trying to ignore his own feeling of living in the unfamiliar place. He tries to act with caution through organizing stuffs in Gloria’s kitchen in their original place. Plus Jun tries not to cause offense to Karl through avoiding sitting on his recliner like private property. The metaphoric frozen goldfish is just Jun himself, now he is frozen in Canada, and he needs refresh. Since the culture shock, weird frozen goldfish confuses him weather or not it is a Canadian custom, making him abnormal thinking method. When he finds the fish alive, the deep constrained emotions erupt and he could not control himself, which he did very well in restriction and regulation before.
