Executive Summary Nike is a name brand known for its sports athletic gear. This report will examine the issues of Nike on a controversial dilemma in which Nike is ethically responsible for manufacturing its goods. Nike has been known to be a sponsor for the highest paid names in the sports industry. Michael Jordan and Tiger Woods are two of many that benefit from the Nike endorsements. Analytically speaking large corporations like Nike Inc. tend to contract a large portion of factories overseas to avoid the strict working regulations in the United States. These third world countries like Cambodia, Vietnam, Pakistan, China, Korea, and Taiwan provide access to readily abundant cheap labor. Nike believed investing in developing countries to manufacture their products which led them to their current multi-billion dollar success. The exploitation scandal of Nike’s success includes labor issues, under age child labor, and wages. People may summarize...

Business Proposal

...Business Proposal Professional Development II Prepared by: Casey Foo Don Lin Karen Lim Kim Hong Lawrence Lim 1 Executive Summary The airline industry is not young, and if it is not because of budget airlines who revolutionized how the industry works in terms of pricing strategies and marketing, it is honestly quite boring to fly! Since the September 11 attacks, airports around the world, including Australia has stepped up security measures extensively, which adds to the ʻhecticʼ experience of air travel. This is exactly the phenomenon what our proposal, called the WonderFlight program intends to address, by bringing our customersʼ flying experience to the next level. WonderFlight aims to bring our customersʼ flying experience to the next level by introducing themes into selected domestic B737-700 flights and each theme changes every three months. To start with, the launching theme would be Lady Gaga. For each WonderFlight, our flight attendants will dress up according to the theme and perform the usual in flight services such as serving meals & beverages. Passengers may also opt to take polaroid pictures on board with our well dressed flight attendants with a charge. On top of that, a custom flight safety demonstration will also be performed by our flight attendants according to the theme to encourage our customers of their interests in the safety features of the aircraft. Famous hits of that theme will also be played on-board to generate a fun and party going atmosphere. Passengers...

Nike

...Executive Summary Nike manufactures and markets sports apparel and equipment on a global scale. They operate in 160 different countries, and have revenues of $18.6 billion. Yet, they are a growth company. Without any significant acquisition, they have consistently grown revenues and profits over the past several years by shifting emphasis on brands they own in growth sectors. Nike’s marketing strategy revolved around two concepts – premium positioning and everyone with a body is an athlete. These concepts drive their strategies, including endorsements from the world’s most popular athletes, and the development of products for both the serious athlete and the mass market. Financially, Nike is strong. They are liquid and are on a steady growth trajectory. They are, however, underleveraged. The company derives significant strength from its global production and logistics network. Despite this, the company faces many threats, both competitive and economic. Nike is well-positioned to defend against these threats. Their move into growth sectors of the market shows savvy. It is recommended that their convoluted organizational structure to reduce operational duplication. They should also adjust their capital structure to make it more efficient. It may also be time for Nike to make a major acquisition, capitalizing on slumping equity markets to strengthen their defenses against economic downturn and competitive threats. If Nike is able to make these adjustments and strategic...

Nike Case Analysis

...9-700-047 REV: SEPTEMBER 6, 2002 DEBORA L. SPAR Hitting the Wall: Nike and International Labor Practices Moore: Twelve year olds working in [Indonesian] factories? That’s O.K. with you? Knight: They’re not 12-year-olds working in factories... the minimum age is 14. Moore: How about 14 then? Does that bother you? Knight: No. — Phil Knight, Nike CEO, talking to Director Michael Moore in a scene from documentary film The Big One, 1997. Nike is raising the minimum age of footwear factory workers to 18… Nike has zero tolerance for underage workers. 1 — Phil Knight, 1998 In 1997, Nguyen Thi Thu Phuong died while making sneakers. As she was trimming synthetic soles in a Nike contracting factory, a co-worker’s machine broke, spraying metal parts across the factory floor and into Phuong’s heart. The 23 year-old Vietnamese woman died instantly.2 Although it may have been the most dramatic, Phuong’s death was hardly the first misfortune to hit Nike’s far-flung manufacturing empire. Indeed, in the 1980s and 1990s, the corporation had been plagued by a series of labor incidents and public relations nightmares: underage workers in Indonesian plants, allegations of coerced overtime in China, dangerous working conditions in Vietnam. For a while, the stories had been largely confined to labor circles and activist publications. By the time of Phuong’s death, however, labor conditions at Nike had hit the mainstream. Stories of reported abuse at Nike plants had been carried in publications...

...CHAPTER LEARNING OBJECTIVES In this chapter, we will address the following questions: 1. What is the business market, and how does it differ from the consumer market? 2. What buying situations do organizational buyers face? 3. Who participates in the business-to-business buying process? 4. How do business buyers make their decisions? 5. How can companies build strong relationships with business customers? 6. How do institutional buyers and government agencies do their buying? CHAPTER SUMMARY 1. Organizational buying is the decision-making process by which formal organizations establish the need for purchased products and services, then identify, evaluate, and choose among alternative brands and suppliers. The business market consists of all the organizations that acquire goods and services used in the production of other products or services that are sold, rented, or supplied to others. 2. Compared to consumer markets, business markets generally have fewer and larger buyers, a closer customer supplier relationship, and more geographically concentrated buyers. Demand in the business market is derived from demand in the consumer market and fluctuates with the business cycle. Nonetheless, the total demand for many business goods and services is quite price inelastic. Business marketers need to be aware of the role of professional purchasers and their influencers, the need for multiple sales calls, and the importance of direct purchasing, reciprocity, and leasing. 3. The buying...

...‘ THE BUSINESS OF MASS MEDIA Advertising and Commercial Culture 345 Early Developments in American Advertising 351 The Shape of U.S. Advertising Today 359 Persuasive Techniques in Contemporary Advertising 366 Commercial Speech and Regulating Advertising 374 Advertising, Politics, and Democracy Back in 1993, the trade magazine Adweek wrote about “The Ultimate Network”— something called the Internet: “Advertisers and agencies take note: It has the potential to become the next great mass/personal medium.”1 The prediction was correct, if not understated. The Internet has become a huge medium for advertisers, targeting audiences more precisely than any medium before it. Yet, none of the venerable ad agencies at that time could have guessed that an Internet start-up—Google— would become bigger than the leading multinational advertising holding companies like Omnicom, WPP, Interpublic, and Publicis. Nearly 99 percent of Google’s $16.6 billion revenue in 2007 came from advertising. THE BUSINESS OF MASS MEDIA B 343 ‘ ADVERTISING However, Google is different from the Madison Avenue agencies. It doesn’t design witty, slick ad campaigns. Instead, it facilitates the dull but effective text-based sponsored links that appear in Google searches or on affiliated sites. “We are in the really boring part of the business…the boring big business,” Google’s CEO Eric Schmidt says.2 What Google’s ads lack in creativity, they make up in precision. Google’s AdWords advertising...
