“TILL MY HEARTACHES END”
(10:00 in length)

FADE IN:
INTERNAL. COFFEE SHOP - NIGHT
Nakaupo si Agnes at naghihintay kay Paolo. Tila balisa at nag-aalala. Titingin sa relong suot nya. Lalapit ang waitress.

WAITRESS:
Gusto mo ba um-order?
Agnes:
Ah… Hindi, okay lang ako. Mamaya nalang.
Waitress:
Paolo:
Hi… *Uupo*
*Magtititigan ang dalawa. Ngingitian ni Paolo si Agnes. Ngingiti si Agnes ng pilit na ngiti.
Paolo:
Sorry ha? Traffic dahil sa ulan.
Agnes:
Hindi, okay lang yun. Nabasa ka pa tuloy. Baka magkasakit ka nyan.
Paolo:
Okay lang. *Mapapatigil* Kumain ka na ba?
*Iiling si Agnes.
Paolo:
Agnes:
Kamusta yung trabaho mo? Madami ka bang nabenta ngayon?
Paolo:
Medyo pagod kasi may bagong project na ilau-launch.
Agnes:

Pao… If this is about us, gusto ko…
Let’s just move on. Kalimutan nalang natin na may nangyaring ganun.
Paolo:
‘Di pwedeng ganun lang.
*Naluluha na si Agnes.
Agnes:
Paolo:
Agnes… Hindi ganun ‘yon.
Agnes:
Pao, pinatawad na kita ‘di ba? Kaya kalimutan nalang natin na may nangyaring ganun. Let’s just move on. Ano nga pala yung sasabihin mo sakin?
Paolo:
Tama ka… Kailangan… Kailangan mag-move on.
*Maiiyak si Agnes.
Agnes… And I thank you for that. Wala pang tao na… Nagmahal sakin the way you… *Mapapalunok* Agnes, hindi ko kaya eh.
Agnes:
Ang ano?
Paolo:
Umabot na sa point na… baka we might end up hating each other.
*Iyak ng iyak si Agnes.
Agnes:
Hindi naman mangyayari ‘yon ‘di ba?
Paolo:
Tama yung sinabi ko nung huli tayong magkasama? Hindi ako yung lalakeng akala mong mahal mo. Kaya siguro mas mabuti pa kung magkanya-kanya muna tayo.
Agnes:
Ayaw mo na ba sa’kin?
Paolo:
Agnes…
Agnes:
Hindi mo na ba ‘ko mahal?
Paolo:
Agnes… Agnes, mahal na mahal kita.
Agnes:
Agnes:
Sya nga pala…
*Mapapatingin si Paolo.
Nakalimutan ko ibalita sa’yo. Nakapasa ako sa board. Destiny? Sana masaya ka na.
*Lalakad na paalis si Agnes.
FADE TO BLACK

3 YEARS LATER. . .
FADE IN:
INTERNAL. COFFEE SHOP – DAY

Paolo:
Hi…
Agnes:
Pao. *Nagulat* Hi…
Paolo:
So… Kailan ka bumalik from the States?
Agnes:
Uhm… Last Friday lang.
Paolo:
Hanggang kalian ka dito?
Agnes:
Siguro mga 10 days pa.
Paolo:
You lookin’ good.
Agnes:
Ikaw rin… Lagi naman eh.
*May magtetext kay Agnes
Paolo:
Uh… Are you with someone now?
Agnes:
*Matatawa* No. I’m not married.
Paolo:
Ako rin. In case you wanted to know.
Agnes:
Ahh okay… Uh sige, we have to go.
Paolo:
Ah o sige! Masaya ako nagkita tayo ulit.
Agnes:
Ako rin. Destiny ‘di ba?
*Lalapit si Paulo kay Agnes. Tititigan ng matagal. Ilalapit ang mukha sa mukha ni Agnes. Hahalikan sa noo. Aalis na si Agnes ng nakangiti. Ngingiti si Paolo.

Holcomb, too, can be seen from great distances. Not that there's much to see simply an aimless congregation of buildings divided in the center by the main-line tracks of the Santa Fe Rail-road, a haphazard hamlet bounded on the south by a brown stretch of the Arkansas (pronounced "Ar-kan-sas") River, on the north by a highway, Route 50, and on the east and west by prairie lands and wheat fields. After rain, or when snowfalls thaw, the streets, unnamed, unshaded, unpaved, turn from the thickest dust into the direst mud. At one end of the town stands a stark old stucco structure, the roof of which supports an electric sign - dance - but the dancing has ceased and the advertisement has been dark for several years. Nearby is another building with an irrelevant sign, this one in flaking gold on a dirty window - Holcomb bank. The bank closed in 1933, and its former counting rooms have been converted into apartments. It is one of the town's two "apartment houses," the second being a ramshackle mansion known, because a good part of the local school's faculty lives there, as the Teacherage. ...Barack Obama Dreams from My Father “For we are strangers before them, and sojourners, as were all our fathers. 1 CHRONICLES 29:15 PREFACE TO THE 2004 EDITION A LMOST A DECADE HAS passed since this book was first published. As I mention in the original introduction, the opportunity to write the book came while I was in law school, the result of my election as the first African-American president of the Harvard Law Review. In the wake of some modest publicity, I received an advance from a publisher and went to work with the belief that the story of my family, and my efforts to understand that story, might speak in some way to the fissures of race that have characterized the American experience, as well as the fluid state of identitythe leaps through time, the collision of cultures-that mark our modern life. Like most first-time authors, I was filled with hope and despair upon the book’s publication-hope that the book might succeed beyond my youthful dreams, despair that I had failed to say anything worth saying. The reality fell somewhere in between. The reviews were mildly favorable. People actually showed up at the readings my publisher arranged. The sales were underwhelming. And, after a few months, I went on with the business of my life, certain that my career as an author would be short-lived, but glad to have survived the process with my dignity more or less intact. I had little time for reflection over the next ten years. I ran a voter registration project in...
