Analyzing the Shawshank Redemption

...Analyzing Shawshank Redemption Crystal Gayle Frapp January 31, 2014 Analyzing Shawshank Redemption The film that will be analyzed and discussed is the Shawshank Redemption, which was Director by Frank Darabont and is a Story by Stephen King. It is based in 1946, a man named Andy Dufresne (Tim Robbins) is convicted of killing his wife and her lover, and him going to prison and dealing with the struggles of prison life as a truly innocent man. . “He's sentenced to a life term at the Shawshank State Prison in Maine, where another lifer, Ellis Red Redding (Morgan Freeman), picks him as the new recruit most likely to crack under the pressure. The ugly realities of prison life are quickly introduced to Andy: a corrupt warden (Bob Gunton), sadistic guards led by Capt. Byron Hadley (Clancy Brown), and inmates who are little better than animals, willing to use rape or beatings to insure their dominance. But Andy does not crack: he has the hope of the truly innocent, which (together with his smarts) allow him to prevail behind bars. He uses his banking skills to win favor with the warden and the guards, doing the books for Norton's illegal business schemes and keeping an eye on the investments of most of the prison staff. In exchange, he is able to improve the prison library and bring some dignity and respect back to many of the inmates, including Red.” After many years and a pick axe Andy manages to escape from prison threw slowly chipping away at the hole in his cell wall where...

Tim Horton's Strategy

...A Strategic Analysis for Tim Hortons Presently, Tim Hortons is regarded as the leading publicly traded restaurant chain in Canada. Not only is it Canada's leading quick-service restaurant brand but also the fourth largest publicly traded restaurant chain in North America based on market capitalization. They have the number one market share in breakfast and snacking day parts and a solid number two share in the lunch day part in Canada (1). However, Tim Hortons needs to pay more attention towards their growth and development into U.S. and other markets worldwide in order to become a true spearhead in their industry. Moreover, they can lessen the risks related with expansion by engaging in partnerships with other successful firms. Analysis/Rationale Although, as mentioned above, Tim Hortons is possibly the leading publicly traded restaurant chain in Canada, it enjoys its success due to its inhabitation of a much smaller market in comparison to markets in U.S., India, and China. To be the best of the lot, Tim Hortons cannot exclusively depend on a single market. In this day and age, there are solid opportunities for them to become the world’s best, through new emerging markets with high probability for huge profits. There are increasing trends of coffee drinkers in China and India, two countries with enormous fondness for Western style drinks and meals and Tim Horton's expansion in those countries will play to their advantage. That is the main reason why McDonalds, the equivalent...

Work

...I am the overnight manager at the local IHOP restaurant. The normal everyday life of the restaurant is quite dull and boring. We are open Sunday through Thursday from 6 A.M. until midnight. On Friday and Saturdays we are open twenty-four hours a day. When the witching hour hits at midnight on these two nights, in particular, it is like being one of the main characters in a Tim Burton movie, maybe perhaps, “A Nightmare at IHOP”. The first of the stragglers start to uproot themselves from their graves around 2:30 A.M. This is when the majority of the clubs start to shut down all over Birmingham. You know what kind of night you are going to have when you see the first of your guests trying to detangle themselves from the restraints of their cars. If it takes them twenty minutes just to exit the vehicle you know you’re in for a bumpy ride. The next thing you notice is the clothing of the people that are about to enter the restaurant. Clothes make up a huge part of this chilling experience. These girls have also rummaged into a t-shirt drawer and decided that a t-shirt will be the choice dress of the night. The t-shirt barely covers the back of their hairy upper thighs. But hey, the mirror that they looked into before they left their house for the night said, “Girl, you look damn sexy”. Glittery makeup is acceptable when it is worn on the eyelids but when you have liberally powdered your entire upper body it is only accentuating...

...A Soldiers Home and How to the War Story Told I decided to choose the “A Soldiers Home” by Ernest Hemingway and “How to tell a War story” by Tim Obrien. I will explain each story and how the story are very similar in theme. “How to Tell a True War Story” examines the complex relationship between the war experience and storytelling. It is told half from O’Brien’s role as a soldier, as a reprise of several old Vietnam stories, and half from his role as a storyteller, as a discourse on the art of storytelling. In Tim O'Brien's short story, "How to Tell a True War Story", Rat Kiley's friend is killed. He writes to his friend's sister and when no response is given, he becomes frustrated. Due to this frustration he calls her a "dumb cooze." Following this O'Brien argues that this is a true war story because it is not moral, never to believe a war story if it seems moral. Next the story jumps to a forest where men need to be quiet for weeks. After a period of time goes by they are no longer sane. They begin to hear noises that scare them, and when they cannot take the silence and the creepiness of the forest they return to camp. When question about their return, the men do not respond, their story is in their eyes and that is enough for anyone who knows that a true war story "never seems to end," it is continuous even after it is done being told. A true war story is also never moral and does not generalize. The truth is so hard to reach. A person can go looking for the moral...

Is Genre an Outdated Concept?

...their own personal preferences which means that if a film is of their preferred genre, they are more inclined to go and see it. Along with allowing personal preferences to develop, genre can also give the audience expectations of a film depending on what genre it is and this helps to give an idea of what the film is about, which assists them in deciding whether or not they want to go and see it. On the other hand, there are more reasons nowadays that affect why people go to see films than just genre for example the special effects. The film 'Avatar' (2009) was a box office hit due to the groundbreaking special effects used within the film. Another example of a reason is the director; the film 'Alice in Wonderland' (2010), directed by Tim Burton (Oscar nominee...

...DOUBLE-DOUBLE, PLEASE” THE ROLE OF TIM HORTON’S IN THE MAKING OF THE CANADIAN IDENTITY Jessica Barry and Yasmin Manji The seemingly simple question “What is a Canadian?” is often answered by blank expressions. The varied geography, regions and ethnicity of Canada, the second largest country in the world, leave its citizens searching for a unifying identity, grasping to things that could potentially help define them as “Canadian.” Canada prides itself on its multicultural society, which, however, raises a question: If what we have in common is diversity, do we really have anything in common? There are popular notions about Canadian characteristics, things recognised internally and externally as uniquely Canadian. The two traditionally considered the root of Canadian identity are the nation‟s love for hockey and its need to be distinct from America. The fast food restaurant Tim Hortons has adopted these identity markers and itself become part of the answer of what it means to be Canadian. This paper intends to explore how Tim Hortons incorporated the few accepted aspects of the Canadian identity in order to establish itself in the Canadian market. This business strategy was successful because, lacking a national identity, Canadians adopted Tim Hortons as an icon that all Canadians could relate to: rich, poor, educated, blue collar, spanning all regions, ethnicities and even political party lines. The Canadian embrace of Tim Hortons has led to the formation of...

Hope in the Shawshank Redemption

...English 3 Mrs. 1 June 2015 Hope in the Shawshank Redemption As strange as it might sound, Emily Dickinson and the Shawshank Redemption is a story about hope. The Shawshank Redemption expresses the story of Frank Darabont, a gentleman who has remained wrongly sentenced of murder and must tolerate life in the harsh and corrupt Shawshank prison, but regardless of this he never loses hope of finding freedom. The storyteller of this story is a man named Red; he had a very different understanding than Andy held about hope. Red continuously spoke about the dynamics of prison and the process of being established. And in Emily Dickinson’s poem is by means of metaphor of a small bird to carry her\him theme that hope stays alive inside us in spite of all of our difficulties. Frank Darabont uses methods such as lighting, tune and camera shots in his film “The Shawshank Redemption” to effectually provoke a state of mind inside the viewers. Brooks is a significant character as he helps us to comprehend the central theme of hope. Brooks understands that the freestanding world is distant to him, in addition has no hope for life on the outside. Darabont customs lighting to show in what way Brooks has nowhere to be found hope and how prison life has taken its toll on him. Brooks is frequently seen in areas of darkness and shadow, on behalf of how he has no hope left whatsoever. For instance when he releases Jake the crow, he is more or less in complete darkness. In this poem, Emily Dickinson...

...Kellyn Lamore Professor Yates Film Appreciation 14 October 2015 Shawshank Redemption The Shawshank redemption is an American drama film that starred Tim Robbins and the amazing Morgan Freeman. The banker Andy was convicted for murdering his wife and her secret lover and was sentenced two consecutive life-sentences. When I watched this movie, I was speechless because I couldn’t believe how the prison guards treated these inmates. Yes, they did something bad, but the way those inmates were treated was so incredibly awful to see. The two major visual components of mise-en-scene are design and composition. Design is the process by which the look of the settings, props, lighting, and actors is determined (Looking at Movies). While composition is the organization, distribution, balance, and general relationships of actors and objects within the space of each shot (Looking at Movies). At first, there was a lot of design in The Shawshank Redemption. For example, the outside world from the prison seems nice lots of freedom. It seems as if at the beginning Andy was a pretty wealthy man by the way he dressed and his job title, a banker. Once he commits his crime, he has to take a scary looking bus into the prison, Shawshank Redemption. Shawshank redemption is a dark, unsafe prison that Andy ended up being placed in. The actors who acted as the prisoners did a good job “greeting” these new inmates by cheering and letting them know that this not the best place to live in. The actors...

Visas maybe issued for 24 months. Employers are required to cover recruitment and return airfare costs, to ensure that suitable accommodation is available, to provide medical coverage until the employee is covered under a provincial plan and to sign an employee/employer contract. The work permit is issued with reference to a specific employer. Employees generally work in sectors such as cleaning, hospitality, manufacturing, oil and gas and construction. (Elgersma, 2007) Tim Hortons "is a company that a lot of Canadians identify with and it is very proudly a Canadian brand," says Howard Ramos, an associate professor of sociology at Dalhousie University in Halifax. "But it's also a company that is a pioneer in hiring temporary foreign workers and so for this reason I think it's important to highlight Tim Hortons as an exemplar of how the temporary foreign worker program has changed and expanded. (Davison, 2012) The temporary foreign worker program has man is a resort companies use to hiring as they will have exhausted all other avenues for finding employees locally. It is a great program mainly for foreign workers who come and work in Canada and if they like it here they can apply for permanent residency. Unlike immigrants...
