Time to Rebound at Willow Pond
Leadership Case Problem B

1. Why is this case included in a chapter about charismatic and transformational leadership? Willow Pond is on the border line of complete disaster and will take a special type of leadership to pull it together in order to achieve success. A charismatic leader will be able to bring a vision into Willow pond in order to transform it. Prior to accepting the position at Willow Pond Ms. Osaka she spoke directly with staff, owners and those that lived there. This action demonstrates Ms. Osaka’s understanding of communication and listening skills. This is important in this chapter because charismatic and transformational leaders “communicate their visions, goals, and directives” which will help to “overhaul the organization, culture or subculture” (DuBrin, 2013, p. 98).
2. What aspects of transformational leadership should Heather emphasize in her approach to rehabilitating Willow Pond?
One aspect that Ms. Osaka’s has already started to implement is communication and listening. An effective leader will listen and implement internal and external resources in order to build upon corrective actions and in a sense she is utilizing supportive leadership. Not only should she use feedback but I feel she should seek feedback from the residents that live in the community as well as the staff that works there. Empowerment would be a great tool for Ms. Osaka to implement because it allows the staff under her to have a say in the changes being made. This helps bring the organization together, increase morale and achieve success together.
3. How might emphasizing the charismatic aspects of her personality help Heather bring about necessary changes?
Being charismatic may help bring the team together to achieve changes in the organization. Ms. Osaka’s personality will give them a feeling of comfort and caring

Leadership

...Mini Case Study - Time to Rebound at Willow Pond Heather Osaka had worked ten years in the hospital administration field, at two hospitals, one HMO, and one nursing home. However, she had yet to hold a chief administrator position. One afternoon, she received a text message from Jake Wofford, a former classmate who was now in the executive recruiting business. “Maybe a great opportunity for you. Get back.” said the message. Osaka did get back to Wofford quickly. The opportunity to which he referred was a position as the director of Willow Pond, a medium-size assisted living home in the same city where Osaka now lived. “Assisted living” refers to helping older residents who are not quite able to care for themselves, yet do not require the level of care provided by the nursing home. Jake was frank in informing Heather that Willow Pond was troubled and that the previous director had been fired. Yet, the home still complied enough with state regulations to remain in operation. The most recent problem at the home receiving publicity involved a man with a criminal record who walked into Willow Pond, sneaked into a resident’s studio apartment, and sexually molested her. To gain entrance to the living area, the intruder donned a “Friends of Willow Pond” smock designated for volunteers. Wearing the smock facilitated his roaming the living area. Before finally accepting the position, Heather spoke with the owners, who also operated several other homes for the elderly. She also consulted...

Transformational Leadership

...CHAPTER [ 3 ] Charismatic and Transformational Leadership The purpose of this chapter is to help the reader understand the nature of charismatic and transformational leadership. Although the two forms of leadership overlap, they are treated separately here because the study of charismatic leadership focuses so heavily on personal traits. The legitimacy of either of these forms of leadership as a separate entity has been challenged. Nevertheless, studying charismatic and transformational leadership represents an important current thrust in understanding the leader’s role. CHAPTER OUTLINE AND LECTURE NOTES The study of charismatic and transformational leadership, an extension of the trait theory, has become an important way of understanding leadership Charisma facilitates leaders carrying out their roles. [ I ]. THE MEANINGS OF CHARISMA Charisma is a special quality of leaders whose purposes, powers, and extraordinary determination differentiate them from others. The various definitions of charisma have a unifying theme. Charisma is also a positive and compelling quality in a person that creates a desire in many others to be led by him or her. The attributes of charisma are important because they lead to behavioral outcomes such as commitment to the leader, self-sacrifice, and high performance. A study with law enforcement workers and business students showed that network members influence our attributions of charisma. [ A ]. Charisma: A Relationship Between the Leader...

The Hunger Games

...To Annalena Part One "The Tributes" When I wake up, the other side of the bed is cold. My fingers stretch out, seeking Prim’s warmth but finding only the rough canvas cover of the mattress. She must have had bad dreams and climbed in with our mother. Of course, she did. This is the day of the reaping. I prop myself up on one elbow. There’s enough light in the bedroom to see them. My little sister, Prim, curled up on her side, cocooned in my mother’s body, their cheeks pressed together. In sleep, my mother looks younger, still worn but not so beaten-down. Prim’s face is as fresh as a raindrop, as lovely as the primrose for which she was named. My mother was very beautiful once, too. Or so they tell me. Sitting at Prim’s knees, guarding her, is the world’s ugliest cat. Mashed-in nose, half of one ear missing, eyes the color of rotting squash. Prim named him Buttercup, insisting that his muddy yellow coat matched the bright flower. I le hates me. Or at least distrusts me. Even though it was years ago, I think he still remembers how I tried to drown him in a bucket when Prim brought him home. Scrawny kitten, belly swollen with worms, crawling with fleas. The last thing I needed was another mouth to feed. But Prim begged so hard, cried even, I had to let him stay. It turned out okay. My mother got rid of the vermin and he’s a born mouser. Even catches the occasional rat. Sometimes, when I clean a kill, I feed Buttercup the entrails. He has stopped hissing at me. Entrails...

Idioms and Expression

...Idioms and Expressions by David Holmes A method for learning and remembering idioms and expressions I wrote this model as a teaching device during the time I was working in Bangkok, Thailand, as a legal editor and language consultant, with one of the Big Four Legal and Tax companies, KPMG (during my afternoon job) after teaching at the university. When I had no legal documents to edit and no individual advising to do (which was quite frequently) I would sit at my desk, (like some old character out of a Charles Dickens’ novel) and prepare language materials to be used for helping professionals who had learned English as a second language—for even up to fifteen years in school—but who were still unable to follow a movie in English, understand the World News on TV, or converse in a colloquial style, because they’d never had a chance to hear and learn common, everyday expressions such as, “It’s a done deal!” or “Drop whatever you’re doing.” Because misunderstandings of such idioms and expressions frequently caused miscommunication between our management teams and foreign clients, I was asked to try to assist. I am happy to be able to share the materials that follow, such as they are, in the hope that they may be of some use and benefit to others. The simple teaching device I used was three-fold: 1. Make a note of an idiom/expression 2. Define and explain it in understandable words (including synonyms.) 3. Give at least three sample sentences to illustrate how the expression is used...
