When people think of the sinking of the Titanic, they will most likely think of the great Hollywood blockbuster movie that was more a love story then a historical movie with documentation of what happened on that cold night of April 14, 1912. Historians like to tell people what happened from the facts that are given to them, and eye witness accounts of what had happened on the ship the night it plunged to its deep dark grave. Everyone knows that the ship sank and that it is gone, but what they don't know is what had happened while people were being loaded into the lifeboats and what was occurring after the ship went down. Men played a big role in all of this; some were looked upon as cowards and others as heroes.
There are different view points of what the roles of men were. Not only during the night the Titanic went down, but also the roles they played in society in 1912. For everyone who survived the sinking, should be thankful and happy because more then half the people on the ship that night passed away. The male survivors however had to justify how they survived, because the rule of the sea was women and children got on the life boats first.
The men aboard the Titanic had responsibilities after the ship collided with an iceberg. They were looked at as if they knew they weren't going to live, but they had to save the women and children who were aboard the Titanic. As for the men who just wanted to save their own lives and didn't care about anyone else, these men were thought to be cowards. There were also people who were considered to be heroes that night. Two of the heroes that night were wireless operators aboard the ship. J.G Phillips and Harold Bride stood by their posts while the ship was sinking so they could send out C.Q.D messages to other ships to inform them of what had occurred to their broken and sinking vessel. The messages also contained information to their exact location so nearby ships could try and help out. The exact location of the Titanic was 41.46 north latitude, and 50.14 west longitude. The ships that were contacted were the Carpathia, Virginia and the Olympic.
Captain John Smith stopped by the wireless room to tell the boys they were off duty. He stated "Boys, you have done your full duty. You can do no more. Look out for your selves." Even though the Captain Smith told the men they were off duty, they continued to work. The two men were knee deep in water as they continued to relay messages until the system did not work. It seems as though this was the mentality of most men during 1912. They did what they had to and were proud to help others in need. They knew by staying and working, they could save more lives.
When Captain John Smith ordered people into lifeboats and off the ship, it was a male's job to help with the task. The crew and seamen were the first to start loading the boats with women and children. The other men started to help the crew members by getting the lifeboats into position so they could load them with people. As the lifeboats were loaded the crew members would put a few males into each boat so they could paddle the boats away to a safer place. That is one of the ways a male could have been a survivor of the Titanic. While on the deck where the lifeboats were at, Major Archibald Butt who was an aid to President Taft helped load women and children into the boats. After helping people into the boats he would lift his cap to these people saying good bye with a smile on his face. A similar instance occurred with Henry B. Harris. Harris over heard a man loading boat who was yelling "Women and children first", and rushed his wife over to the boat. He gave her a kiss and that was the last they ever saw of one another because Harris went down with the ship and was never seen again.
There were passengers who told stories about a man who saved peoples lives. Fifth Officer H. Lowe was one of the men who loaded the lifeboats. He was in charge of one of the first boats to be lowered from the boat deck. Like in other boats he put only enough men in them so they could paddle the oars.
The men aboard the Titanic stood aside and made a path while the women and children entered the boat. Lowe saw it as it was his duty not to allow one else to get on the boat as it was being lowered into the icy water below. As it neared the second deck, there was a group of men who had the idea to jump onto the lifeboat as it was being lowered. Lowe had a revolver and fired a shot into the air to let the men on the second deck know not to jump onto the lifeboat. Officer Lowe yelled out to the men on the second deck that he had a gun. "That's just to show you that this pistol is loaded and while I don't want to hurt anybody, I'll kill anyone who attempts to get in this boat. I have fifty-eight souls in my charge, and I can't afford to lose them"

The men stepped down from the railing and the lifeboat made its way into the water safely because of Fifth Officer H. Lowe. If it weren't for him shooting his gun into the air, more people could have died by falling off the boat and into the cold water below.
There were also people, men and women who knew they had no chance of survival. This is a sad thing but it is something that happened that night. Some of these people were wives who did not want to leave the sides of their husbands. Mrs. Cecil Chapman had a chance to get on a lifeboat, but believed that she would rather be at her husbands' side when the ship went down. She wanted to be along side the person she loved the most, her husband.
As for the other people that knew the end was near, had their own ways of dealing with the tragedy. A man named Mr. Guggenheim was with his secretary the entire night. They both decided to get dressed up in the finest evening clothes they had with them. Both were not wearing life belts when the Titanic went down. They thought of them selves as gentlemen, and that is how they wanted it to be remembered.
It seems as though for the most part the male victims of Titanic lived up to be gentlemen and took care of the women and children first. They behaved like true heroes for that they knew what was going to happen to them, but helped many others before the ship went down. Yes you did have people who only wanted to save their own lives, but it seems as though there are more classy men that wanted to see the females and kids off and safe before they thought about saving them selves.
The surviving men had to justify how they were still alive because of the rule of women and children came first. Some of these men were asked by the crew members to get into the boats. Others were lucky men who had jumped of the deck and into the water; these were the lucky men who were picked up by lifeboats later on that night. This was the case for Mr. R.W. Daniel. Daniel was on the deck and saw that on the starboard side of the ship they were loading allowing husbands to get into the lifeboat with there wives. A few minutes before the ship was finally submerged, Daniel jumped into the icy water and began to swim away. He was lucky because an hour later that night, he was picked up by a drifting lifeboat looking for survivors.
One of the men that was looked at closely was considered to be a coward for not going down with the ship as a gentleman. Mr. J. Bruee Ismay who was the director of the White Star Line was saved in a life boat. How did he get into a lifeboat when he knew that women and children came first? Mr. Ismay states that he had good reasoning for getting into the lifeboat that evening.
The boat was there and a certain number of the women had been loaded. The officer called out to any other women who might be on the deck to come. There were no other passengers men or women, on the deck, so I got in. That is all there is to it.

Now this is what Mr. J. Bruee Ismay had to say on his behalf. People are allowed to think what they want about this gentleman. But it seems hard for a historian to believe that when the officer called out for other women and children or even another passenger on the deck to come forward to take a spot in the lifeboat, that there was no one present. So Ismay took it upon him self to get into the lifeboat.
Overall the male gender role for American in 1912 was to be brave and proud. When put in tough situations, it seems as though most acted like gentlemen. This was proven on April 14, 1912 when the Titanic sank. It is sad that 1,595 went to death while on the Titanic. But it also showed that you had brave men who acted like heroes.
These were the men who put their lives behind them to help someone else when there was a disaster happening. These gentlemen will always be known as the people who did the right thing at the right time; especially when death was staring at them in the middle of the night, while in the middle of the ocean.

The Titanic

...Since 1912, when the Titanic sank on her inaugural voyage, there have been many theories behind the mystery of how this unsinkable ship ended up on the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean. Up until now, the theory has been that an iceberg tore open a 300-foot gash in the side of the 900 foot-long luxury liner. Even after 1985, when Robert D. Ballard founded the Titanic, the expeditions mainly focused on the beauty of the ship and not the damage it had sustained from the iceberg. Of course the Titanic is submerged in many feet of mud so searching for the damage has been impossible. Just Recently researchers were able to determine the damage to the ship by imaging the sunken liner with an acoustic device known as a sub-bottom profiler. They examined the ship’s starboard side, finding a series of six thin openings along the hull. This implied that the iron rivets along the plate seams probably popped open creating small gaps for the water to come in. Two wrought-iron rivets from the Titanic’s hull were recently hauled up for scientific analysis and were found to be riddled with unusually high concentrations of slag, making them brittle and prone to fracture. From the observation, researchers concluded that since these seams were roughly 20 feet below the waterline, there was an enormous amount of pressure from the seawater, which made it’s way into the compartments very quickly. Navel Architects and marine engineers claim the Titanic was moving at an estimated speed of 22 knots...

...Titanic After years of construction and work, the Titanic was finally ready for her maiden voyage. The beginning of her voyage was to take place on the morning of April 10, of 1912 at approximately 10:00am. The first of the Titanic’s passengers began to board the ship. Most of these passengers were British residents who had journeyed to the Titanic by means of transportation rather than a boat or train. People rich or poor were scattered all over Southampton's bay, attempting to find their walkway. After the second and third class passengers boarded, the first class passengers were to be escorted to their cabins. Approximately at 12:00pm Titanic was ready to set sail. After Titanic sets out into the open sea, her water displacement caused connected ropes of the New York, which was a small ship, to break. This caused the stern of the New York to swing towards Titanic’s mighty bow. Titanic official's quickly prevented a catastrophic collision. After hours of being delayed the Titanic finally sets sail into the open sea headed towards Cherbourg, France. The Titanic lowered her anchor when arriving to Cherbourg, France. The Titanic reached Cherbourg, France at about 5:30 p.m. of the same day. When they anchored in Cherbourg more passengers boarded the Titanic. At approximately 8:10 p.m. Titanic raised her anchor and sailed towards Queenstown, Ireland. She arrived at Queenstown at around 11:30 a.m. of the next morning to pick up more passengers and 1,385...

...in luxury ocean liners.” Built to accommodate millionaires, the Titanic was the world’s largest ship and illustrated its superlative maritime technology. In addition to being fast, the ship was considered to be invincible. But, why and how did the Titanic ultimately sink on its first and last expedition? Neither the design nor the structure of the Titanic was accountable for the Titanic’s unforeseen demise. Rather the main reason was a lack of understanding of the limitations of technology on the part of those who should have known better. Radio had been invented in 1901. Titanic was equipped with Marconi's (Inventor of radio telegraph system) new wireless telegraph system and her two Marconi operators kept the wireless room running 24 hours a day. The telegraph system was vital to the Titanic’s communication success. Without it the ship probably wouldn’t have set sail to begin with as the telegraphs linked three vital areas of the Titanic: Station 1: The Captain’s Bridge, Station 2: The Starting Platform, Station 3: The After Docking Bridge. Both the Captain’s Bridge and the After Docking Bridge were responsible for the ships maneuvering, docking/steering. The Captain’s Bridge was responsible for the emergency and main engine. The construction of the Titanic would have been possible without the telegraph system but would have been almost impossible to actually set sail with any kind of efficiency. The Titanic being built with some of the advanced technology of it’s time just...

Titanic

...The R.M.S. Titanic was called the “ship of dreams”, and some called her the “unsinkable ship”. It was the largest steam engine ever built in the world. She was the most beautiful and biggest ship ever to set sail to the sea. In the summer of 1907, Lord Pierrie, Harland & Wolf, J. Bruse Ismay, and White Star Line planned to build three giant ships (Olympic, Titanic, and Britannic). They were to be designed as the most luxurious ships in the world, and to be built with the finest woods and furnishings. They would cater to the rich and affluent that traveled the North Atlantic. The three ships would give customers luxury and they would travel at greater speeds than ever before. In March 1909, the keel was laid down for yard number 401, where the Titanic would be built. It took two years to complete the construction of the ship and cost approximately $7,500,000. She was 882.9 feet long, 92.6 feet wide, and weighted 46,329 tons. Titanic was the largest ship ever to be built by man in the world. Twenty- two tons of tallow, soap, and train oil were used to grease the slipway bed to coat and protect it against the enormous three-tons-per-square-inch pressure of the freshly painted hull. In January of 1912, sixteen lifeboats were installed, which later became a total of twenty lifeboats in all. There were three different types of lifeboats on the Titanic:14 wood lifeboats, 2 wood cutters, and 4 Englehardt collapsible boats. The capacity of the twenty lifeboats total was 1178, which...

There were twenty boats floating nearby… and only one came back. One. Six were saved from the water, including myself. Six… out of fifteen hundred. Afterwards the seven hundred people in the boats had nothing to do but wait… wait to die… wait for an absolution that would never come. Titanic

...The Titanic must be one of the most famous ships ever built. She set off on her maiden voyage in April 1912, crossing from Southampton in England to New York City in America. In between, she would make stops at France and Ireland. The Titanic was such a huge ship that she weighed more than 46 000 tons and was about 270 meters long. Thought to be virtually unsinkable, she was built such that any flooded compartment could be sealed off quickly and easily, preventing the spread of water through the ship. Passengers would then have ample time to be rescued since the builders of the ship believed that in the worst scenario, the Titanic would probably take two to three days to be completely submerged. That fateful night, the temperature was close to zero degree Celsius. Two lookouts stationed at a high point on the ship were freezing but they had to be alert to watch for any signs of danger that the giant ship might face. In that temperature, icebergs-huge mountains of ice floating in the sea -- were a constant threat. It was already close to midnight, so the darkness that surrounded them greatly impeded their field of vision. Even if they perceived any dangerous icebergs, it might be too late to avert a disaster. The moonless sky only worsened the situation. Then the worst happened. One of the lookouts spotted a huge iceberg right in the path of the Titanic. He immediately rang the alarm. The captain of the ship reacted just as promptly and ordered the Titanic to change her...

...The Titanic was called of many things: “The unsinkable ship”, “Floating palace”, and “Ship of dreams”. However, on one cold September day in year 1912, this amazing ship was setting sail from Queenstown all the way down to New York. Many people wanted to be on this boat for when it was ready to set out to its voyage, and many were. There were 2,228 passengers, not even counting the crew. With 2,228 passengers aboard, 1,523 dies, 705 survived, and only 306 of those bodies were recovered, leaving 1,217 bodies from the Titanic that were never found and claimed. Many of the crewmembers survived the sinking of the Titanic. After it started to get very hectic, the crewmembers started to get scared and did not care if the passengers survived. They used their guns to keep the passengers from stopping them. Seven bodies from the Titanic were shot by the crewmembers. The reason the Titanic sank is they were out in cold waters, cold enough for big icebergs, it was late at night, and not easy to see everything from a distance but soon, with getting close enough, the tower watchers saw something ahead. Getting only a glare, and becoming past the fog they realized that they were about to become face to face with an iceberg. Quickly telephoning the drivers to turn the boat to go right passed it only sounded that easy in theory, they steered the wheel as fast as they could making a break, so they thought. The iceberg sheered the whole side of the Titanic, but not many thought anything of...

...the bridge and people in the water. On deck, people were scrambling towards the stern or jumping overboard in hopes of reaching a lifeboat. The ship's stern slowly rose into the air, and everything unsecured crashed towards the water. While the stern rose, the electrical system finally failed and the lights went out. Shortly afterwards, the stress on the hull caused Titanic to break apart between the last two funnels, and the bow went completely under. The stern righted itself slightly and then rose vertically. After a few moments, at 02:20, this too sank into the ocean. Only two of the 18 launched lifeboats rescued people after the ship sank. Lifeboat 4 was close by and picked up five people, two of whom later died. Close to an hour later, lifeboat 14 went back and rescued four people, one of whom died afterwards. Other people managed to climb onto the lifeboats that floated off the deck. There were some arguments in some of the other lifeboats about going back, but many survivors were afraid of being swamped by people trying to climb into the lifeboat or being pulled down by the suction from the sinking Titanic, though it turned out that there had been very little suction. As the ship fell into the depths, the two sections behaved very differently. The streamlined bow planed off approximately 2,000 feet (609 m) below the surface and slowed somewhat, landing relatively gently. The stern plunged violently to the ocean floor, the hull being torn apart along the way...

..."Jack, I’m cold” said Rose. Jack said, “It’s ok Rose just hold on just a bit longer, a boat is bound to come back.” Ok Jack I trust you” said Rose. Just then Jack thought of an idea. He said “Rose, stay here I’ll be right back,” and he started swimming to dead bodies, and every time he got to a dead body he took the life jacket from them. He also took an oar that someone had abandoned. Pretty soon Jack had five life jackets and an oar and he swam back to Rose. He gave Rose the oar and said, “Okay Rose, “I have some life jackets, I’m going to put them under the door so we can both get on but I’m going to need a part of your dress.” Okay, Jack,” said Rose, and she tore off a piece of her dress and gave it to Jack. He took the dress and started to tie the life jackets together. He put them underneath the door and secured them to the handles of the door. He said, “Rose, the door should be stable. I need you to hang on to the door while I get on.” “Okay,” said Rose.” Rose grabbed the handles on both sides of the door and Jack got on. Jack started to push the door with the oar. He saw a dead man and took his life jacket. He put the life jacket on and started to push the door away from the wreckage to try to get to a boat. “Rose,” he exclaimed! “I see two boats; they are coming back!” He started to yell trying to call the boats over. Who Is To Blame The Titanic

...RMS Titanic, some of you may know what this is some of you may not. The Titanic was the most famous ship to ever sail, mainly because it sank. In the early morning of April 15th 1912 the Titanic hit an iceberg during it´s maiden voyage. In about two and a half hours she sunk in the Atlantic Ocean at a depth of around 12,500 feet deep, killing 1,500 people. Only an estimate of 712 survived. On September 20th, 1911 the Olympic, the Titanic's sister ship, had a very serious collision with the HMS Hawke just off the coast of the Isle of Wight. This collision had caused a lot of problems for the White Star Line as it meant the Olympic was out of service until ruinously expensive repairs were made. This meant that the Titanic's maiden voyage was postponed, which lead to a loss of profit that they needed to make up. Is it possible that the owners of the ships switched them and sunk the "Titanic" purposely? The only people who...
