To Catch a Thief Movie Review

“It takes a thief to catch a thief.” Well, that’s the saying we’ve always heard. In modern day times, we’ve seen it in productions like Fast and Furious, Criminal Minds, and even in comedies like 22 Jump Street. Hitchcock based his movie, To Catch a Thief, solely based on this saying. John Robie (the infamous jewel thief from previous years) is being framed as stealing multiple precious jewels around the city. The culprit has the same technique and does it with the same stealth as Robie did. The police think Robie could be the only one to commit these crimes so he conjures up the idea that he has to catch the actual thief to prove his innocence. In his struggle to do so, he comes into contact with an old friend (Danielle), a jewel insurer, and two ladies from America (a mother and daughter), all who help contribute to the smooth transitions between scenes and an exciting ending. Therefore, To Catch a Thief is a striking movie, being both witty and suspenseful; Alfred Hitchcock creates this feeling by making the movie not too predictable, scripting engaging characters, and keeping scenes implicit.

First off, Hancock set up the movie to where it wasn’t obvious who the jewel thief was, but if you paid attention to detail, you could make a good guess. From the way characters talked, it was believed that a man was the thief. For Robie even says, “He picks perfect victims and only the right stones. Goes up walls, over the roofs, down through the skylights. Leaves no clue and then disappears in the night...If somebody caught this imitator, we'd all be off the hook, wouldn't we?...No one believes me, but the police are chasing the wrong man.” He himself even believes the culprit is a man. This allowed the viewer to be surprised when the real thief was discovered. Danielle also puts on an act that she’s a young girl who only has concerns of girlish things and pretends that she whole-heartedly believes Robie’s stealing the jewels. She even continually says things like, “I've always dreamed of going to South America. People say it's a virgin country. I can cook, sew, keep my mouth shut and peddle stolen jewels on the black market...” The producer also doesn’t focus on her much as a character; therefore, the audience doesn’t pay much attention to her, making us forget that she could easily be the thief. Yet, I love that if one’s really paying attention, you can note that she definitely could be the culprit. She’s constantly bringing up the jewels, she dresses similar to Robie (implying a deeper meaning), she’s athletic, and she knows Robey and his line of work well enough to commit the crime.

Secondly, I enjoyed how the characters blended well together and how each one made the movie interesting. John Robie was the “typical” main male character. He was dashing and handsome yet he was smart and very sarcastic so I was always entertained. Danielle was the very typical love struck teen and I loved her sass. “I was just thinking about you, imagining you in your expensive villa enjoying life, while we work like idiots for a loaf of bread” She brought humor to the movie and in the end, really helped wrap up the movie with our discovery of her being the jewel thief. Francie was very charming and I don’t think I could resist being jealous of her. I loved her pouty attitude and how she was a “go getter,” ultimately getting Robie. I also enjoyed Mrs. Steven’s bluntness and “I’ll do what I want” attitude. She definitely brought comedy to the movie and helped make it move along smoothly.

Lastly, I think it’s nice that the producers left parts up to our imagination to figure out. One example of this is when Robie went to Francie’s room to watch the fireworks show. We all know what happened, but it was nice to not have it thrown in our faces. Another example is when Danielle’s father was killed. I like that it was in the dark and there was no blood or gore. I also like how in the very end, they didn’t go on about how Francie and Robie ended together. They left it to the audience’s imagination how their life turned out together.

Hitchcock vs Kubrick

...considered the primary creative force in the picture. Why are Hitchcock and Kubrick so special I am going to argue that they are great auteurs, how I'm going to do this is by viewing two hitchcock movies and two Kubrick movies and compare them to movies I have recently watched in the movie theaters. The two Hitchcock films I'll review watching are vertigo and to catch a thief . I choose these films because vertigo is the very first Alfred Hitchcock movie I watched and it was very interesting to watch such an old movie that was so entertaining. The way Hitchcock used the music and the way he is able to build the suspense and keep the suspense going even when without the music made it very shocking to me. And then in to catch a thief how Hitchcock was able to put an ordinary man in such bizarre events made it fun to watch. Two movies I have chosen for Stanley Kubrick are the shining and 2001 a space Odyssey. I choose the shining because it is the first scary movie I have ever watched I have watched it 2 to 3 years ago with my family and I haven't watched a scary one since the way Kubrick was able to use the Instruments to produce the suspense and thriller behind every door, made it a very memorable movie to watch. In the theaters I've recently watch Captain America 2, Dawn of the planet of the apes, and...

...whole plot line in one apartment. A train station can be viewed as an anonymous place where people like Hugo can live without being noticed. Besides, the people walking around the train station make great comedy with their interactions and thus enhancing the narrative. The characters such as the police officer, who makes every effort to send any parentless child in the station to the orphanage, the flowershop girland the old couple also enable the director to jump between story lines throughout the narrative, keeping the audience interested. Another subject that twists the narrative is the early film history, which takes us on a journey when Melies flashbacks to his time as a movie director. On the other hand, the mise-en-scene is constructed in a manner so that we as the audience can believe that the movie is set in Paris. The costuming of the every scene brings the viewers to the city of Paris; the hat that Isabelle wears can easily be associated with French artists. To convey the feeling of Paris, the train station is set up beautifully, with the flower shop or the café. There is also another touch, the Eiffel Tower, and it can be interpreted as a metaphor; the biggest mechanical object...

How Identity Theft Affect the Culture of Our Society

...How Identity Theft Affect the Culture of our Society Sections I, II, III and IV Rodrekus Baskin DeVry University How Identity Fraud and Theft Impact the Culture of Our Society Section I Identity theft affects millions of Americans every day. Scam artists and hackers lay in wait for an unsuspecting person to get caught up their scheme through ignorance or naivety so they can take full advantage of their personal information to do as they desire with it. Problem is, it infiltrates and depreciates the integral infrastructure of our society which creates a cultural lapse through the declination of economic and cultural growth and double jeopardizes an already unstable system to the brink of its destruction. To understand how identity theft works or happens, one need to know and understand what identity theft is, the different forms of identity theft, cyber security and the impact on its victims, the methods used by identity thieves to obtain identifying information about their victims, and preventive solutions. How Identity Theft Affect the Culture of Our Society A single mother looking forward to advancing her financial situation comes across what appears to be the opportunity she has been waiting for. A real estate agent has provided her with the fortune of owning her own home and without skepticism of any impending dangers or foul play, even though he displayed what appeared to be proper credentials, she relinquished all of her personal data...

French New Wave

...An artistic movement whose influence on film has been as profound and enduring as that of surrealism or cubism on painting, the French New Wave (or Le Nouvelle Vague) made its first splashes as a movement shot through with youthful exuberance and a brisk reinvigoration of the filmmaking process. Most agree that the French New Wave was at its peak between 1958 and 1964, but it continued to ripple on afterwards, with many of the tendencies and styles introduced by the movement still in practice today… French New Wave The New Wave (French: La Nouvelle Vague) was a blanket term coined by critics for a group of French filmmakers of the late 1950s and 1960s, influenced by Italian Neorealism and classical Hollywood cinema. Although never a formally organized movement, the New Wave filmmakers were linked by their self-conscious rejection of classical cinematic form and their spirit of youthful iconoclasm. "New Wave" is an example of European art cinema. Many also engaged in their work with the social and political upheavals of the era, making their radical experiments with editing, visual style and narrative part of a general break with the conservative paradigm. Using portable equipment and requiring little or no set up time, the New Wave way of filmmaking presented a documentary type style. The films exhibited direct sounds on film stock that required less light. Filming techniques included fragmented, discontinuous editing, and long takes. The combination of objective realism...

Why We Broke Up

It’ll rattle the hinges a bit when it lands, because it’s so weighty and important, a little jangle along with the thunk, and Joan will look up from whatever she’s cooking. She will look down in her saucepan, worried that if she goes to see what it is it’ll boil over. I can see her frown in the reflection of the bubbly sauce or whatnot. But she’ll go, she’ll go and see. You won’t, Ed. You wouldn’t. You’re upstairs probably, sweaty and alone. You should be taking a shower, but you’re heartbroken on the bed, I hope, so it’s your sister, Joan, who will open the door even though the thunk’s for you. You won’t even know or hear what’s being dumped at your door. You won’t even know why it even happened. It’s a beautiful day, sunny and whatnot. The sort of day when you think everything will be all right, etc. Not the right day for this, not for us, who went out when it rains, from October 5 until November 12. But it’s December now, and the sky is bright, and it’s clear to me. I’m telling you why we broke up, Ed. I’m writing it in this letter, the whole truth of why it happened. And the truth is that I goddamn loved you so much. The thunk is the box, Ed. This is what I am leaving you. I found it down in the basement, just grabbed the box when all of our things were too much for my bed stand drawer. Plus I thought...
