“Cecil Jacobs is a big wet hen!” I heard a familiar voice yell. I stood up from my chair and stumbled over to the window. “Hey!” I heard another familiar voice yell as I looked over the dark lot scanning for my two kids. The lot was completely pitch dark, but I became used to the dark long ago and I could barely make out an outline of what looked like a life-size walking ham. Why would Scout be dressed as a ham? I wondered to myself. I couldn’t see Jem although I knew it was his voice I had heard. I watched as Scout as Jem approached the big oak tree. Once the kids stumbled under the big old tree, I could make out Jem walking along side Scout talking quietly to her. The kids stopped all of the sudden, and I wondered if something was wrong. …show more content…
Jem must have caught him in the lip, I thought. Jem rolled on the ground next to Scout. Amazingly Jem bolted up and grabbed Scout. He was trying to outrun the man! He might escape I thought hopefully. He nearly reached the edge of the sidewalk when the man caught up.
That was when I knew I had to do something. Something I feared, I needed to not only help the kids escape this evil man, I was forced to be seen by the kids. Even though I was frightened, I knew I couldn’t wait any longer. I would have to help the kids and do it fast.
I sprinted out into the open and ran towards Scout and Jem. The man scuffled with Jem and I could tell Jem was trying to avoid the black switchblade that was in the man’s left hand. The man snarled as he tried to jab the knife into Jem’s chest.
I reached the two right as the man grabbed Jem’s arm and snapped it behind Jem’s back. The noise made me stop and cup my hands over my ears. Suddenly, I was filled with hatred for this man. How could this man do this to them? Why would he hurt innocent kids?
Pumping with adrenaline from my new found hatred for this man, I stabbed the man in the side of his rib cage with my kitchen knife. I never had killed a man before and I never desired to; nevertheless, this was a desperate

...With total revenue and comp sales down again in the first quarter of 2010, Borders Group's two top executives discussed way to improve the chain's profitability (loss in the quarter was reduced to .1 million, from .0 million) and its digital strategy, in a conference call last Thursday. CFO Mark Bierley said Borders will look to maximize the profitability of its stores by "aggressively" pursuing lease buyouts of underperforming outlets; it had 680 stores at the end of the first quarter. Borders will also implement new measures to cut shrinkage and explore ways to increase the efficiency of its supply chain, including shipping more product directly to stores. The Fluidity of Great Depression. Gender Norms & Racial Bias in the Study of the Modern "Great Depression"

...The Great Depression was a severe worldwide economic depression in the decade preceding World War II. The timing of the Great Depression varied across nations, but in most countries it started in 1930 and lasted until the late 1930s or middle 1940s. It was the longest, deepest, and most widespread depression of the 20th century. In the 21st century, the Great Depression is commonly used as an example of how far the world's economy can decline. Cities all around the world were hit hard, especially those dependent on heavy industry. Construction was virtually halted in many countries. Farming and rural areas suffered as crop prices fell by approximately 60%. Facing plummeting demand with few alternate sources of jobs, areas dependent on primary sector industries such as cash cropping, mining and logging suffered the most. Some economies started to recover by the mid-1930s. In many countries, the negative effects of the Great Depression lasted until after the end of World War II. Start Economic historians usually attribute the start of the Great Depression to the sudden devastating collapse of US stock market prices on October 29, 1929, known as Black Tuesday; some dispute this conclusion, and see the stock crash as a symptom, rather than a cause, of the Great Depression. Even after the Wall Street Crash of 1929, optimism persisted for some time; John D. Rockefeller said that "These are days when many are discouraged. In the 93 years of my life, depressions have come and...

Prim named him Buttercup, insisting that his muddy yellow coat matched the bright flower. I le hates me. Or at least distrusts me. Even though it was years ago, I think he still remembers how I tried to drown him in a bucket when Prim brought him home. Scrawny kitten, belly swollen with worms, crawling with fleas. The last thing I needed was another mouth to feed. But Prim begged so hard, cried even, I had to let him stay. It turned out okay. My mother got rid of the vermin and he’s a born mouser. Even catches the occasional rat. Sometimes, when I clean a kill, I feed Buttercup the entrails. He has stopped hissing at me. Entrails. No hissing. This is the closest we will ever come to love. I swing my legs off the bed and slide into my hunting boots. Supple leather that has molded to my feet. I pull on trousers, a shirt, tuck my long dark braid up into a cap, and grab my forage bag. On the table, under a wooden bowl to protect it from hungry rats and cats alike, sits a perfect little goat cheese wrapped in basil...

If I Stay

...FOR NICK Finally . . . Always 7:09 A.M. Everyone thinks it was because of the snow. And in a way, I suppose that’s true. I wake up this morning to a thin blanket of white covering our front lawn. It isn’t even an inch, but in this part of Oregon a slight dusting brings everything to a standstill as the one snowplow in the county gets busy clearing the roads. It is wet water that drops from the sky—and drops and drops and drops—not the frozen kind. It is enough snow to cancel school. My little brother, Teddy, lets out a war whoop when Mom’s AM radio announces the closures. “Snow day!” he bellows. “Dad, let’s go make a snowman.” My dad smiles and taps on his pipe. He started smoking one recently as part of this whole 1950s, Father Knows Best retro kick he is on. He also wears bow ties. I am never quite clear on whether all this is sartorial or sardonic—Dad’s way of announcing that he used to be a punker but is now a middle-school English teacher, or if becoming a teacher has actually turned my dad into this genuine throwback. But I like the smell of the pipe tobacco. It is sweet and smoky, and reminds me of winters and woodstoves. “You can make a valiant try,” Dad tells Teddy. “But it’s hardly sticking to the roads. Maybe you should consider a snow amoeba.” I can tell Dad is happy. Barely an inch of snow means that all the schools in the county are closed, including my high school and the middle school where Dad works, so it’s an unexpected day off for him, too. My mother, who...

...C h a p t e r 1 Prewriting GETTING STARTED (OR SOUP-CAN LABELS CAN BE FASCINATING) For many writers, getting started is the hardest part. You may have noticed that when it is time to begin a writing assignment, you suddenly develop an enormous desire to straighten your books, water your plants, or sharpen your pencils for the fifth time. If this situation sounds familiar, you may find it reassuring to know that many professionals undergo these same strange compulsions before they begin writing. Jean Kerr, author of Please Don’t Eat the Daisies, admits that she often finds herself in the kitchen reading soup-can labels—or anything—in order to prolong the moments before taking pen in hand. John C. Calhoun, vice president under Andrew Jackson, insisted he had to plow his fields before he could write, and Joseph Conrad, author of Lord Jim and other novels, is said to have cried on occasion from the sheer dread of sitting down to compose his stories. To spare you as much hand-wringing as possible, this chapter presents some practical suggestions on how to begin writing your short essay. Although all writers must find the methods that work best for them, you may find some of the following ideas helpful. But no matter how you actually begin putting words on paper, it is absolutely essential to maintain two basic ideas concerning your writing task. Before you write a single sentence, you should always remind yourself that 1. You have some valuable ideas to tell your reader,...

...WRITING REFERENCES Citi: Oil Could Plunge to $20, and This Might Be 'the End of OPEC' "It looks exceedingly unlikely for OPEC to return to its old way of doing business," Morse wrote. Despite global declines in spending that have driven up oil prices in recent weeks, oil production in the U.S. is still rising, wrote Edward Morse, Citigroup's global head of commodity research. Brazil and Russia are pumping oil at record levels, and Saudi Arabia, Iraq and Iran have been fighting to maintain their market share by cutting prices to Asia. The market is oversupplied, and storage tanks are topping out. A pullback in production isn't likely until the third quarter, Morse said Vets fight to save hero dog who tried to shield owner from house fire "She's doing OK.
