To Kill a Mockingbird Thematic Essay
In many cases, people expect illusions and not even consider the possible reality. In Harper Lee’s, To Kill a Mockingbird, the people of Maycomb county tend believe in a lot of exaggerated truths and not the true reality of things.
A character Harper Lee includes as a major focus within the novel is Boo (Arthur) Radley. Boo Is described as a monster and most of the kids in Maycomb are petrified of him, as Jem points out to Dill, “Jem said if Dill wanted to get himself killed, all he had to do was go up and knock on the front door.” (Lee 16). Boo was said to 6½ feet tall, had yellow teeth that he used to eat squirrels and rodents, and a long jagged scar across his face. Tom is a black man during times where racism is a big problem, the dark community is heavily segregated and is blamed for all of society’s issues. Unfortunately, Tom becomes the center of attention in the town of Maycomb, which isn’t a good thing. The town’s burden, Mr. Ewell, puts him in a position he can’t come out of, “I seen that black man* yonder ruttin’ on my Mayella!” (Lee 231). Though the Ewells are considered ‘white trash’, the town still would take a white man’s word over a black man’s any day. Atticus Finch makes it obvious that Tom Robinson in fact didn’t rape Mayella, but was framed to cover up the sinful actions her father had done to her previously. While the children think that there is no way that Tom could be convicted, everyone else knows that he only has a zero to one chance of surviving this case.
