On February 26, 2013, Lorraine Bayless died at Glenwood Gardens after a nurse refused to give her CPR. Glenwood Gardens is an independent senior living facility. During the 911 call, there is a constant request from the operator to provide care to Bayless, but the caller said it was against her job policy to perform CPR. Jeffrey Toomer, the Executive Director at Glenwood Gardens, was quoted saying, “In the event of a health emergency at this independent living community our practice is to immediately call emergency medical personnel for assistance and to wait with the individual needing attention until such personnel arrives. That is the protocol we followed.” Following the incident, there was uproar by concerned citizens, medical professionals and ethicists. Someone argued that Glenwood Gardens acted ethically and others felt differently. Ethics are the principles that dictate ones morals. There are always arguments to both sides of issues that can convince right or wrong. This incident has raised legal, professional, and ethical considerations as to what was the correct way to handle the situation.
There were two videos that were watched in class that portray very different moods to the situation. The CBS Los Angeles video called, “Staff At Senior Living Home Refuses to Perform CPR on Dying Woman” takes a very aggressive approach to contradict what Glenwood Gardens did. They even went as far as to interview Dr. Thomas Horowitz, MD. Horowitz is a medical ethicist who claims to be very disgusted by the situation. He doesn’t understand why a facility would disempower his or her employees from helping someone. Legal analyst, Steve Meister, is also featured in this clip and claims that regardless of the Glenwood Gardens policy, they have a legal obligation to do more than call 911 and could face criminal charges for not helping. How to Perform Cpr

...Ashley Avilez English 6/19/13 CPR for the Average Joe What would you do if you see someone having hard time breathing or someone who just collapsed? Would you be prepared? Any human being is capable of performing CPR, which obviously sounds a bit frightening but these following steps; which are call 911, pump the chest, and give two breaths will help ease you through this challenging process. As a Certified Healthcare Provider I have practiced CPR plenty of times and can tell you it’s not easy but as they say “practice makes perfect”. First step, you must see if the victim is unresponsive, if the person does not respond and is not breathing or breathing properly then you must quickly call 911 and get back to the unconscious/conscious person. If the victim is responsive let them know you are here to help and ask if they want help. If they refuse help, leave them alone but stay close until further authorities arrive. When this first step is all fully completed continue to the second step; chest compressions. Second step requires some muscle power. When the victim gives you the okay, you need to start chest compressions. Chest compressions will help the heart get a jump start. If the victim starts gasping this means you are doing a great job, keep going. Start the compressions in the center of the chest approximately two inches in depth about a hundred compressions per minute very quickly and swiftly. According to the American Heart Association you must complete five cycles...

...in these cardiac emergencies are key to favorable post-emergency outcomes. Out-of-hospital cardiac emergencies historically have been associated with poor post emergency health outcomes (Nichol & Kim, 2015). Initiation of the chain of survival, activation of the EMS system, use of an automated cardiac defibrillator (AED), and CPR all have been shown to improve patient outcomes (Drager, 2012; Vadeboncoeur, Richman, Darkoh, Chikani, Clark, & Bobrow, 2008). Cpr Alternative Assessment

...CPR Alternate Assessment Can you save a life? In an emergency, when every second is critical, would you know what to do? According to recent statistics sudden cardiac arrest is rapidly becoming the leading cause of death in America. Once the heart ceases to function, a healthy human brain may survive without oxygen for up to 4 minutes without suffering any permanent damage. Unfortunately, a typical EMS response may take 6, 8 or even 10 minutes. Performing CPR dramatically increases the survival chance while a person awaits the arrival of EMS. CPR helps keep blood flow to the brain and heart and can be the crucial action that keeps a person alive. The skills needed to perform CPR can be learned by everyone. What Is Cpr?

...What is CPR? CPR stands for CardioPulmonary Resuscitation i.e. to help restart the heart (pulse) and lungs (breathing).   When do we perform CPR? CPR is performed when a person stops breathing and/or the heart stops.   Why is it important to learn CPR? Every year about 350,000 people suffer cardiac arrest i.e. their heart stops. Sudden cardiac death is the most common cause of death in United States and Canada. If you know how to perform CPR you may be able to save a life. Why timing is important? When the heart (pulse) and lung (breathing) stops, the victim has 5 minutes before (gradual) brain death starts to occur, if no CPR is performed. Therefore, it is very important to start CPR as soon as possible.   What is Hands-only CPR? Any bystander who is not trained in CPR can perform this type of CPR to try to save a life. Hand-only CPR is better than no CPR. If you witnessed an adult or a child/infant who suddenly collapses then: 1. Call EMS / 911 2. Push hard and fast in the center of the chest | | Anatomy of Heart and Lungs 1. Heart  The heart beats continuously to pump blood to all parts of the body. It has four chambers: Right and left atrium and ventricles.  Blood flows from the right side of the heart to the left side. The heart is connected to blood vessels (arteries and veins) which combined make up the circulatory system.   2. Lungs Each person has two lungs underneath the ribcage: One on the left side and the one on the right. Its main function...

Cpr Essay Ah 210

...AH 210 Hands Only CPR September 30, 2013 Several Americans won’t do CPR because they don’t know how or they are afraid of hurting someone. Hands only CPR could give them the courage to help the injured person. Using hands only CPR would be as effective as conventional CPR for sudden cardiac arrest at home, in public or at work. It can double or maybe triple a person’s chance of survival. There are only two steps to using hands only CPR. Call 911 and push hard and fast in the center of the chest. It is very important that you first call 911 so emergency medical personal can reach the injured person and then continue chest compressions. All of the videos showed how to perform hands on CPR clearly. Hands only CPR is different than conventional CPR in that hands only CPR only have two step. Conventional CPR you check for a pulse, call 911, give two breaths, use 30 compressions and then give another two breaths and so on until emergency personal arrive. I believe it would be very effective and would use it if I had too. All the videos were good, educational and funny. Ken Jeong is a funny person and doing the chest compression to the beat of Staying Alive is also a good idea. I liked the Undeading video the most. I usually don’t like to watch scary movies but this was alright. Heart and stroke fdn has a great imagination and I will try to find more of the work. I would have never thought of using zombie’s to promote CPR. If I were in Walmart and someone...

...Amy Nesburg Ms. Schraud, J.D. OST-149 NW1 September 5, 2015 Chapter 3 Discussion Questions 1. Yes, you are protected under the Good Samaritan Law. The law states that those who do volunteer must exercise reasonable care and skill in rendering such aid. This law does protect those professionals who do offer aid, outside of their work environment, in good faith, without gross negligence. “Good faith” is an abstract quality that is best defined as being faithful to one’s duty or obligation. According, to N.C.G.S §90-21.14, we are covered under the Good Samaritan law if we were perform CPR on a co-worker. If we administer CPR to a person, while performing CPR we break that persons rib, we cannot be sued because that is likely to happen when you perform CPR on a person. If you perform a medical act or help in an emergency situation, you cause an injury or death and it can be proven that it was caused by gross negligence, wanton conduct or intentional wrong doing then you can be sued. 2. When a physician moves to another state, he must obtain a license to practice in that state. The physician could be required to pass that state’s medical examination, or the physician could receive reciprocity or endorsement from that state. While medical practice acts vary from state to state, they generally, provide for the establishment of a medical examining board that has authority to license physicians, establish the baseline for the practice of medicine in that state, determine the prerequisites...

...Delivering Learning and Development Activities Identifying Training Needs The purpose of my training session was to give delegates a guidance of the skills and knowledge to understand Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) should it ever be required in an emergency situation. I felt that the simple knowledge of basic CPR is important for all to know for personal reasons. Training needs are identified in numerous ways. It maybe that an employee would be required to do a full first aid at work course within their working environment under Health & Safety legislation or just the companies preference to increase their provision. It maybe required under their occupation e.g. working with children that they are required to hold this qualification. The individual may simply have the desire or feel they lack the knowledge and skills should they ever be required. An individual may simply by deemed the best person to have first aid qualification because the come in to contact with many members of the public. Cpr Steps

...coughing, or not breathing normally you should call 911 and return to the victim. In most locations the emergency dispatcher can help you if you have no prior CPR training. You will begin with chest compressions, pushing down in the center of the chest 2 inches 30 times. You want to pump hard and fast at a rate of at least 100/minute. Next you will want to clear their passageway by lifting the chin and tilting their head back, then you will pinch their nose cover their mouth with yours and blow until you see the chest rise. Two breaths are all you need and then you will continue the 30 chest compressions and 2 breaths until help arrives. CPR with children compared to with adults they are very similar they have the same compression to ventilation ratio 30:2. If the victim is in between the age of 1-8 you want to use the heel of one or two hands for chest compressions. Pushing in the center of the chest near the sternum about 2 inches at the rate of 100/minute. Next you want to tilt the head back and listen for breathing if they are not breathing normally, pinch their nose cover your mouth with theirs and blow until you see their chest rise, each breath should only take 1 second each. If you are alone with the child give 2 minutes of CPR before calling 911. Just like with children you will have to perform 2 minutes of CPR before calling 911. First you want to see if the baby is breathing normally, or being responsive so patting the chest and feet if you get nothing you want to...

Line Drawn For Ethics Essay

...Where & When is the Line Drawn for Ethics? Assess the situation Most nurses will perform their jobs without any problems ever arising due to ethic situations. As time changes though, so do the thoughts and perspectives of nurses and bystanders. Situations arise and their eyes are opened to see things outside of the box. This paper will discuss four different situations that have happened in the past couple of years, involving different aspects of nursing, all in which have received a lot of controversy. So what is the big question; where and when does the line of ethics get drawn? Situation One: Do nurses have the right to refuse CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) on a person? In California an elderly woman died because a “nurse” refused to do CPR on her (Wozniacka, 2013). The family of the woman that died agrees that the nurse was in the right even though the woman passed away. This woman lived in a non-assisted living home and fell to the floor in the dining hall. According to the family this woman knew this and she still wanted to live there. She did not have an order for DNR (do not resuscitate), but knew that if something were to happen then she would not have help until someone called 911 and the first responders arrive. Well someone did call 911 and the unit coordinator...
