The hypothesis for this experiment was: Reaction times will increase when using a cell phone because it creates a distraction and the human brain can only focus on one thing at a time. The experimental design of this experiment was relatively simple. For the experimental group, a participant would wear electrodes that were connected to a device, called a SpikeRecorder, which would record their reaction time to a flash of light. The participant did the same thing a second time, except they were using their phone at the same time. Four participants with five trials for each were used for this experiment. First, three electrodes were placed along the participant’s ulnar nerve. The ulnar nerve is the nerve that controls the movement that was being tested. One electrode was placed on the top to the hand, behind the knuckles, one electrode was placed about midway down the forearm along the bottom side, and the last was placed close to the crease of the elbow. Placing the electrodes in this position allows for the most accurate data, because the ulnar nerve flexes the hand.
