The Power of Manipulation
In Virginia Woolf’s, To the Lighthouse, there a many constructional themes at work; through a constructional lens I will be looking at the theme of manipulation. Manipulation plays a big role in To the Lighthouse. Not only is manipulation a big part of Mrs. Ramsey’s character but Virginia Woolf manipulates time throughout the novel.
“Naturally, one had asked her to lunch, tea, dinner, finally to stay with them up at Finlay, which had resulted in some friction with the Owl, her mother, and more calling, and more conversation, and more sand, and really at the end of it, she had told enough lies about parrots to last her a lifetime (so she had said to her husband that night, coming back from the party). However, Minta came...Yes, she came, Mrs. Ramsay thought, suspecting some thorn in the tangle of this thought; and disengaging it found it to be this: a woman had once accused her of "robbing her of her daughter’s affections"; something Mrs. Doyle had said made her remember that charge again. Wishing to dominate, wishing to interfere, making people do what she wished—that was the charge against her, and she thought it most unjust. How could she help being "like that" to look at? No one could accuse her of taking pains to impress. She was often ashamed of her own shabbiness. Nor was she domineering, nor was she tyrannical.” (67) This quote shows Mrs. Ramsey’s manipulation and the way people see her. While some people love Mrs. Ramsey because they cannot see through her manipulation, there are the others that see the manipulation and hate her for it. They see her as someone that interferes and dominates the situation. Mrs. Ramsey also knows that she manipulates people and doesn’t know if she uses it for good or evil. She asks herself if she pushed too hard for Minta to make up her mind on the marriage. “Was she wrong in this, she asked herself, reviewing her conduct for the past week or two, and wondering if she had indeed put any pressure upon Minta, who was only twenty-four, to make up her mind. She was uneasy. Had she not laughed about it? Was she not forgetting again how strongly she influenced people? Marriage needed—oh, all sorts of qualities (the bill for the greenhouse would be fifty pounds); one—she need not name it—that was essential; the thing she had with her husband. Had they that?” (71) There was however one person that was not influenced by Mrs. Ramsey’s manipulations, Lily Briscoe. Mrs. Ramsey had talked to Lily often about marriage and even a marriage to William Banks but even though Lily had been compelled by the idea here and there she never did marry. “Mrs. Ramsay had planned it. Perhaps, had she lived, she would have compelled it. Already that summer he was "the kindest of men." He was "the first scientist of his age, my husband says." He was also "poor William—it makes me so unhappy, when I go to see him, to find nothing nice in his house—no one to arrange the flowers." So they were sent for walks together, and she was told, with that faint touch of irony that made Mrs. Ramsay slip through one’s fingers, that she had a scientific mind; she liked flowers; she was so exact. What was this mania of hers for marriage? Lily wondered, stepping to and fro from her easel.” (200)
In To the Lighthouse Woolf plays time by changing the pace. Woolf uses the first and third section to slow time down, to describe specific moments in time. She uses this slowing down of time so we may be able to look into the characters minds, to understand their thoughts and feelings. We see this mostly through Lily Briscoe as she paints and reflects on the life of Mrs. Ramsey, “Life stand still here.”(184). Lily recalls how Mrs. Ramsey use to bring all the people together and almost make time stand still, “Mrs. Ramsey making of the moment something permanent.” (184) Part two is a long stretch of time with the passing of Mrs. Ramsey, Andrew and Prue. In part two Woolf describes the seasons and the scene at the cabin, she makes it seem like time is standing still but she is also going over a ten year time period in very few pages. By fast forwarding the time Woolf is showing us how precious time is and how we should not pounder on moment to long. Woolf illustrates how Mrs. Ramsey never saw the light house again, “they had been coming, but had put off coming, what with the war and travel being difficult these days” (156)
Through a constructionist lens we have examined how manipulation played a key role in To the Lighthouse. Manipulation was used by Mrs. Ramsey to make things happen, things that she believed to be best. Mrs. Ramsey even know of here manipulations and wondered if she was doing it for good or evil. Manipulation was also used by Woolf to play with time. By playing with time Woolf is able to allow the reader to look into each character’s thoughts, but also cover a massive time period in a short number of pages.

...Compare and contrast how gender roles are presented in The Importance of Being Earnest and a Doll’s House in light of Ibsen’s statement that “there are two kinds of moral laws, two kinds of conscience, one for men and one quite different, for women.” According to Ibsen’s statement, he states that moral laws are divided into two, one for women and the other for men. He’s claiming that the “moral laws” that society has implanted has double standards. Ibsen and Wilde present gender roles through morality, marriage, food delicacies, dance and wealth. These four factors affect how the characters in both plays are viewed by society. Both writers present the expectations society has for both genders. They highlight the obscurity, the society they lived in, had. This method was to leave the audience questioning about the society they lived in. Ibsen displays the realness of a typical marriage and he doesn’t follow the conventions of a Well-Made play, he presents the hardcore facts of marriage and family life; he does this by giving both genders unequal power, which contradicts the meaning of marriage, “the joining of two equals”. Whereas Wilde switches the gender roles, this method is very effective as it emphasises and reveals clearly how ridiculous the social class behaves. Even though Ibsen uses highly respected jobs to portray the archetype of men, Wilde uses the absence of occupation to concentrate on the other aspects of Victorian life. In the first Act, Ibsen outlines the stereotypical...

...been so easy and as effective as the fluorescent light bulb. Now what makes Fluorescent light bulbs so good? Is it the fact that your standard Incandescent light bulb is just so bad, or is there really something else to this bulb? I say its a little mixture of both. The standard 60 watt incandescent light bulb is what most house holds are using now. Little do they know about 90% of the power consumed by an incandescent light bulbs is emitted by heat rather then by visible light. For a few months out of the year this could be a great help during the bitter cold and trying to keep your house warm. But let’s flip the script and what about the summer. When you’re trying to keep your house cool. The bulb then is wasting energy by its self then making it warmer in your house which makes your air conditioning work harder. All said and done your wasting energy and money because of a simple light. And all this is said if only the bulbs make it a full year. Most Incandescent light bulbs typically have a lifespan of around 900 hours. To put that into perspective, you'll be able to turn the bulb on for around five hours per day for six months before the bulb will use up its lifespan. This means your buying more light bulbs which means spending more money, and in the summer a lot more energy. Larry West a professional editor and writer on environmental issues said. “If you want to change the world, start by changing a few light bulbs. It is one of the best things you can do...

Testing Electrical Hypothesis

...home from work to find the entry door light is not working. As I explore though the house I find that the lights inside and outside the house are not working throughout. I have identified this by attempting to turn the lights on in each room with no luck of light. I know that if only one area of the house was affected that the issue would be likely found at the interior breaker of the home, but this is not the case. In developing a theory, I know none of the lights are working, which is an indicator that the problem is not a bulb issue or an interior breaker issue. I also know that the power company has no reported outages in the area. I do know that the house was built in the 50’s and the electrical panel has not been upgraded since the home was built. Based on this information my hypothesis is that issue is within the main breaker outside the home. Due to the age of the home and electrical panel, it is likely a burnt out fuse that has caused all the lights to not work. Just to be sure I have tested the interior breakers of the house by flipping them to the off position and back on, still no lights. I also tested the exterior breaker by flipping it to the off position and back on, still no light. Now by replacing the fuse and switching on the lights I have solved the problem and have light throughout the house. From the research above I have found the problem was in fact a burnt out fuse at the main breaker of the exterior of the house. Question 2: It’s dinner time...

Sometimes he would walk for hours and miles and return only at midnight to his house. And on his way he would see the cottages and homes with their dark windows, and it was not unequal to walking through a graveyard where only the faintest glimmers of firefly light appeared in flickers behind the windows. Sudden grey phantoms seemed to manifest upon inner room walls where a curtain was still undrawn against the night, or there were whisperings and murmurs where a window in a tomb-like building was still open. Mr Leonard Mead would pause, cock his head, listen, look, and march on, his feet making no noise on the lumpy walk. For long ago he had wisely changed to sneakers when strolling at night, because the dogs in intermittent squads would parallel his journey with barkings if he wore hard heels, and lights might click on and faces appear and an entire street be startled by the passing of a lone figure, himself, in the early November evening. On this particular evening he began his journey in a westerly direction, towards the hidden sea. There was a good crystal frost in the air; it cut the nose and made the lungs blaze like a Christmas tree inside; you could...

Pervasive Computing

...Pervasive Computing Pervasive computing is a trend towards information being readily available to anyone, anywhere at anytime. This trend is due to the decrease in powerful microprocessors being embedded in everyday objects enabling users and devices to connect wirelessly to the internet, devices, and to other users from wherever they may happen to be. Pervasive computing thus provides users with the ability to access and take action on information conveniently. This idea of pervasive computing is to enable users to interact other users and access information in a more natural form such as merely speaking and gesturing. Mobile phones and personal digital assistants (PDAs) have become very much a part of everyday life due to the many functions they provide and the functions that are yet to be implemented. These functions are made possible through chips being made smaller and able to compact different functionalities. Pervasive computing will usher in new forms of collaboration, communication, the ease of acquiring information, and performing functions that will become the norm in homes, clothing, and businesses. What pervasive computing does is eliminates the steps to complete tasks. For example if a student needed to go to a library to do research for a term paper he/she would get dressed, drive, walk, or take public transportation to reach the library, and ask a librarian to direct him/her to the resources. Today all it takes is having an internet connection and...

...incredibly important. His book, “Great Expectations”, reflects on social status by showing what it does to people and that it is not as important as it seems. It takes us on a journey through a young, common labouring boys life into becoming an upper class Gentlemen. In Pips journey, there a two people that play a big role enabling him to become high in society. These two people are “Mrs Havisham” and “Magwitch”. Mrs Havisham has high social status living in a big house with money and all you could ever ask for. The name of her house is “satis house” which sounds like an abbreviated version of satisfaction. It gives the reader a sense of whoever living here has everything and no longer needs anything else, they are completely satisfied with life. Ironically, this is not the case with Mrs Havisham. She is completely unsatisfied with life. As a result of this she has become a very strange woman who has never left the house in more than 10 years. Besides the name, the house is very suited to Mrs Havisham. The house is made of and described as “of old brick and dismal”. In a sense, this is also a statement about Mrs Havisham. She is not made of old brick but she is refusing to move on and must stay as the “old brick“ and that she has also turned cold like bricks . Her life is also dismal. She no longer lives for any purpose and doesn’t care what happens to her. Magwitch first appears in the book on the second page.. Magwitch appears near the beginning of the book because he...

Fahrenheit 451 Archetypal Analysis

...various times the “light vs dark” archetypes are utilized and when the archetypical death and rebirth occurs to convey the extent of which the novel is strengthened by archetypes. In Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451 the light vs dark archetype helps show to what extent archetypes are used to strengthen the novel when Montag is conversing with Clarisse after Mildred began reading her script. The author states “He felt his body divide itself into a hotness and a coldness, a softness and a hardness, a trembling and a not trembling, the two halves grinding one upon another.”{Bradbury 21}. In this passage Bradbury is showing that inside Montag the light and dark are warring against each other. As light vs dark are opposites the author uses opposites to show the relationship between the two, for example the comparison between cold and hot, the cold represents the dark as darkness is inherently cold as light provides heat. The two parts grinding against each other show to the light and dark at war, as they at odds at one other. Since they cannot coexist the light and dark in this situation refer to the Montag, in that they are his struggle to free himself from the ignorance that is his societal beliefs. The author also states when Clarisse and Montag walk to her house, "When they reached her house all its lights were blazing" (Bradbury 7}. As this may come across as insignificant, in actuality it shows that as Montag only known the other houses to be darker: Clarisse’s house signified a family...

When the boy and Mangan’s sister finally talk, the character suggests the boy go visit a bazaar called Araby. Since Mangan’s sister cannot attend, the boy plans to go and buy Mangan’s sister a gift. On the night the boy is to attend, the uncle is late coming home and by the time the young boy borrows money and makes his way to the bazaar, most of the people have left and many of the stalls are closed. The boy buys nothing and walks through the dark, empty halls. The character is disappointed in himself and the surrounding world. The author plays with light, shadow, and color throughout the story. Joyce utilizes color in Araby to show imagery of the neighborhood, Mangan’s sister, and the darkness that depicts life experiences. The narrator describes the neighborhood as continuously dark and uses obscure references to make the boy's reality of living in the gloomy town more vivid. There are no streams of sunlight or flowery landscapes in this story; darkness is used throughout the story as the main theme. “North Richmond Street” is introduced...

Scientific Method

...from this incident could be why does the plant grow towards the window? The hypothesis is reasoning behind this growth pattern such as the plant may respond to the light which they need to make their food. At this point a prediction can be assessed. If it is true the plants respond to the light, growing three plants under the light and three plants in the dark is sufficient for collecting data about soil nutrients, leaf color, number of leaves and blossoms, length of stem, and which direction the plant is leaning or growing. After conducting the data, the soil nutrients did not change significantly in any pots. Surprisingly the plants in the dark grew much more than the plants in the light, while the plants in the light produced a flower unlike the plants in the dark. The plants in the light grew straight up tall, and the plants in the dark trailed over the side of their pots. This experiment produced many relations between the plants and the light they need to grow however it does not fully explain which direction the plant grows due to light ("The Scientific Method", 1996). Following the steps for the scientific method in real-life situations can assist in drawing a logical conclusion to an enquiry. For example, an individual is sitting in their house and the lights begin to flicker. After a few moments the lights flicker and then completely go out, but the clock beside the bed is still...
