Historical Context
Tobacco one of the major leading causes of preventable and premature death, accounting for an estimated 443,000 American deaths in the United States each year or one out of every five deaths. These deaths are due to preventable conditions such as cancer, heart disease, stroke, and lung diseases including emphysema, pneumonia, and chronic airway obstruction. No other risky, self-indulgent addictive behaviors directly endanger bystanders as much as cigarette smoking or tobacco use endangers nonsmokers through secondhand tobacco smoke or inhaled environmental tobacco smoke (Oriona, 2009).
According to the Center for Disease Control nearly 24.6% high school students have used at least some type of tobacco product. More than 80% of adult smokers begin smoking by 18 years of age with 99% of first use by 26 years of age. In …show more content…
Is the banning of tobacco related products on University grounds ethically justifiable in the name of public health protection? Public health is primarily concerned with the health of the entire population rather than the individual health of individuals. Because this policy affects all individuals located on university grounds or events this policy is a form of hard paternalism (Oriona, 2009). Although this policy infringes on the autonomy of smokers and potential smokers it in effect limits exposure to smoking and promotes the health of nonsmokers. Because the University’s policy does not ban smoking in its entirety the ethics behind their policy can be justified by utilitarianism and the Harm Principle. The Harm Principle states that any policy that interferes with the liberty of action can be rightfully exercised over others to prevent harm to others (Oriona, 2009). Smokers are still free to smoke; however, it must be in an environment that won’t harm others, such as their personal vehicle or off university

Examining the Application Business Ethics and Laws in the Tobacco Industry

...Ethics and Laws in the Tobacco Industry Abstract “Ethics is not something exterior to the economy…rather, ethics is and interior principle of the economy itself, which cannot function if it does not take account of the human values of solidarity and reciprocal responsibility.” (Pope Benedict XVI) I agree with Pope Benedict. Ethics deals with values that relate to the nature of human conduct and values associated with that conduct. Health Advocacy Campaignment Development

...strive to make a reality. Unfortunately, many are deprived of that dream because of smoking and tobacco use. It is estimated that approximately 16 million Americans suffer from a disease as a result of smoking in addition to the one in five deaths that occur annually from smoking (Smoking & Tobacco Use, 2014). The purpose of this paper is to describe the population affected by smoking, summarize the attributes of two successful health advocacy programs and develop a successful health advocacy campaign for smoking. Smoking and the Affected Population Tobacco use is the leading cause of preventable deaths in the nation (Smoking & Tobacco Use, 2014). There are many reasons that an individual chooses to partake in tobacco use including stress and peer pressure. In 2012, with an estimated 42.1 million Americans aged 18 years or older, approximately 18% of the adult population was cigarette smokers (Smoking & Tobacco Use, 2014). Aside from adult users, it is estimated that more than 3,200 adolescents smoke their first cigarette on a daily basis (Smoking & Tobacco Use, 2014). According to the 2012 Surgeon General’s Report, approximately 9 out of 10 smokers initiate smoking by the age of 18, and 99% will begin smoking by the age of 26 (Cigarette Smoking, 2014). The Ethical Predicament of Advertisements: an in-Depth Study of Publicizing Tobacco, Alcohol and Sexual Appeals.

...advertising industry holds responsibility of providing promotions that fall under ethical boundaries and obey moral conduct. However, with the expansion and evolution of global communication, the fundamental meaning of human ethics has been progressively abused. This study’s central concern is the ethical dilemma plaguing advertisements in Lebanon. It focuses on how Lebanese people, especially the youth, are manipulated and influenced by the ethical digression exposed in advertisements. The three aspects examined were the portrayals of sexual appeals, alcohol and tobacco since they represent the most mistreated issues. The study used an electronic survey consisting of ten questions intended to depict the opinions of Lebanese people on current advertisements. It was found that the male and female participants mutually find present ads to be inappropriate when considering these aspects. Alcohol, tobacco and sexual portrayals pose a concern to the participants rendering them unethical. A general consensus proposed stricter regulatory measures to be taken against such advertisements. Lebanese advertisers must venture for opportunities and methods to publicize ideas and products without submitting them to immoral standards. Further recommendations and research gaps are presented in the study.   Introduction: The Ethical Predicament of Advertisements: An in-depth study of publicizing tobacco, alcohol and sexual appeals. Analyzing Ethical Issues in Marketing

...Analyzing Ethical Issues in Marketing Kari Bertrand MKT/554 November 11, 2013 Sandra Payne Analyzing Ethical Issues in Marketing There are three areas of ethical concerns for marketing flavored cigarettes. The first concern is the marketing to younger consumers or minors, that are not legally able to purchase tobacco products, (Layton, 2010). The second is the ban on favored cigarettes other than menthol, but there is no ban in regard to flavored cigars or blunts. The third and final concern is the marketing company’s responsibility to their contractual obligations with The Exotic Smokes Company. These three concerns are essential to the success of the marketing strategy and plan. The Target Market There is a ban that prohibits the advertising and selling of tobacco products to minors. The Exotic Smokes Company wants to reach a demographic that is perilously close to the ban of advertising to minors. The marketing has to be specific targeting the college age consumer or young business professionals to avoid costly litigation. Ban on Flavored Cigarettes The marketing company must advise the Exotic Smokes Company as to the ban on flavored cigarettes. The marketing company must not advertise a banned tobacco product. With full knowledge that the product is in direct violation and continuing to market the product is unethical and will potentially open the marketing company up to litigation. The marketing company is ethically obligated to discuss the Exotic Smokes...

Advertising Ethics: Alcohol and Tobacco

...and is often accused of violating several ethical standards. The question begs to be asked, in the quest to sell a product, are advertisers in fact selling their souls? Advertising is essential to a company’s success and utilized to generate revenue and profits. While it can be argued that all advertisements are manipulative, the public deserves to know what options they have when making purchases. If advertising were consistent in its standards of use, (delivering only useful information with only words and no other image appeal) then there would be no predicament to its ethical framework. The fact remains that advertising can often be manipulative create false desires and the power advertising agencies exert over the general public is not being used responsibly. Essentially, advertising is trying to accomplish four objectives: first, advertisements are meant to create awareness, second they strive to establish a brand’s name and identity, third advertisements seek to provide information to the public in a way that is memorable and lastly, and controversially, advertisements are used to convince the consumer that he or she will be better off with their product. While the use of most products will not directly kill you, if alcohol and tobacco are used as instructed they will lead to death;...

Not All Companies Are View as Equal

...industry plays a vital role in one way or another in making the life of the public better or worse but what differentiates between them is the market expectations. It is entirely ethical to consider one company less important than the other if the reasons are objective. Issues like the tobacco industry help businesses earn favor from consumers but at the same time it help destroy their own lives. Industries are fairly targeted since a socially ethical industry will always attract customers even though the products or services are not quite essential in life. Not all industries are viewed equally, as some industries happen to be harmful to their consumers. The tobacco industry is one such industry and continues to be a menace to the populace with their addictive products on to which people get hooked and have difficulty getting off it. Even though there is argument that the consumer should be held responsible for their decisions, this would not be fair as far as the tobacco industry is concerned. The tobacco industry goes out of their way to entice people into the habit of using tobacco related products. (White, 2015). If people were left to their own devices, then it would probably make some sense to let them be responsible for their decisions. The challenge, however, is that is not the case. The tobacco industry is one of the most aggressive advertisers. It has a strong appeal that it has directed towards the younger generation. The problem is, even as the industry is aware...
