Love knows no reason, no boundaries, no distance. It has a sole intention of bringing people together to a time called forever. — Unknown

The saying above is something that can be related to the context of communication with our love ones in the society today, but with cyberspace, it has made communication easier for everyone; Unlike before where messages are sent via snail mail and telegrams when our family or friends leaves home, those letters eventually get lost in time specially if we don’t take good care of them. With cyberspace however, it is never impossible for us to reach them (our love ones) and continue to build relationships even when they’re across the continent.

I started using social media in 2010 when one of my closest friends moved to Canada. As I wasn’t familiar in using other social media that time such as friendster or myspace , we used yahoo mail instead as our main tool of communication since yahoo messenger wasn’t applicable to us since we don’t own our own computers back then to personally download the application. As time flies, Facebook came into the picture in list of social medias and because of the distance that bounded us, cyberspace in the form of social media became our reality — interacting with my friend wasn’t only limited to using emails for messages, connecting ourselves through liking and commenting on photos and also posting and sharing status on each other’s walls made our friendship stronger, specially with the user friendly interface that Facebook offers, looking through photos and videos is more visual compare to only seeing words using email (Note: because attaching photos using email is limited to a limited file size).

The transition between using email to Facebook was actually quite easy and exciting, mainly because you actually get to see more photos what’s going on the other side of the world or to actually see the whole picture of what they are actually referring to — such as the time where my friend told me it was hard to actually make a snowman; as a kid I’d actually wonder why so, it’s just a ball of frozen flakey ice and it was easy when they portray it in television shows. With the photos she posted, I then actually understood why it was hard to build a snowman — it actually take a lot skills and practice to build a perfect snowman! The constant communication that we have makes me happy, it was as if my friend was here even though in reality she’s on the other side of the world. It’s knowing that that one button “send” could deliver your thoughts on how my day went, random stories and how bad my day went (or complaints) can make my mood lighter. Then there’s also the “post” button to upload pictures for her to see the events happening in my life at the present at that time that would eventually make me feel connected to her and maybe vice versa.

Though separated by the seas, our constant communication through social media has brought our friendship closer as we frequently update each other with our whereabouts in of our lives. When my friend came back from Canada (in 2013), its was as if no time was lost; through cyberspace, we were connected to each other regardless of the distance that bounded us, and I think that makes the experience more wonderful and hard to forget. Until now, my friend and I meet each other when time permits us to; in times that we do not meet we are actively chatting away and sending wacky photos to each other… maybe it’s an old habit that we can’t seem to break, a reflex action or even an instinct, because I couldn’t actually call it a day until I bothered her with a little bit of something or replying to her messages within the day.

However many the messages we sent over time, photos and comments made, statuses shared and posted on each other’s walls will forever (or at least in this lifetime) be “saved” or “stored” in the supercomputers that Facebook and other social media uses to hold data and information from its users. After all, cyberspace is a parallel universe with no physical geographical land or water forms but blank space mapped by great minds to connect humans in the vast world that we live today. “ Power” in the context of cyberspace today in my opinion, is the capacity of one to reach out to anyone in the form different social media available in the internet — the parallel universe that humans have developed over time as technology progresses. The internet in the Philippines was made available around 1994, through the years, the internet access was made accessible specially in the urban areas and it has then been incorporated in our daily lives. With its accessibility, it has connected me to my family and friends who are abroad even just for a period of time.

Raising Well-Rounded Children

...INTRODUCTION Children today face a lot of challenges that were not present, or maybe not realized, years ago. It seems that children are not allowed to be children very long. Society today accelerates the growing process; and our children are suffering the consequences of dealing with adult issues far too early in life. It also seems that some parents are not aware that while allowing the child to live as an adult, experiencing adult things rob them of their natural childhood development. There are many reasons why our children are growing up so fast, but in most cases the parents must take the blame. Maybe they are using the example by which they were raised; maybe they feel that they should just be friends with their children, or maybe they are too young themselves and don’t know how to raise children. Whatever the reason, the children are the ones suffering. We have a God given privilege to raise our children and it comes with responsibility. God expresses in Proverbs 22:6 “Direct your children onto the right path, and when they are older, they will not leave it.” (NLT). The responsibility of a parent is to properly direct their children in a lifestyle that will lead them to mature adulthood. And if the raising of your children is proper and productive, they will retain the principles in their later years. There are several areas that must be addressed when our goal is “Raising Well-Rounded Children”. Those areas will be address in this paper. Although this information is...

Plate Techtonic Essay

...constantly changed through tectonic behaviors. This was argued for decades up until Wegener’s developed four major plate-tectonics theories. The geological changes we view today can be accredited to global activities demonstrated through the youth of the ocean floor, plate boundaries, and volcanic eruptions. These phenomenon’s play a significant role in the plate tectonic effects in all fields of geology. Contributions and methods began through geologist Alfred Wegener who proposed that 250 millions years ago the supercontinent Pangaea existed, but broke apart through continental drift. Researchers were quick to deny but through Wegener’s remarkable discovery of plant and animal fossils found along the coastline of South America and Africa, it resulted as imperative evidence the continents being previously joined. The convection in the mantle is one of the main driving forces that causes Earth’s core to rise while the cooler mantle rock sinks. This then causes the mid-ocean ridges to pull and sink downward at subduction zones. Most evident plate tectonic forces are most commonly shown along movement in narrow zones. These movements create a better understanding with relations to earthquake activity. Different plate boundaries are the causes of these geological mechanisms. For instance divergent boundaries occur when plates move apart along spreading centers, causing magma to move up creating new crust as it rises from the mantle. The magma that solidifies underlying the ocean...

...summary of When Reality TV Gets T00 Real (text 2) in about 150 words: The text “When reality TV gets too real” is mainly about what the boundaries are for stepping in and stop the show or let the camera run so they get higher ratings. The show “Intervention” is a show about people with addiction to drugs or alcohol. There have been several of cases where the producer and his crew considered to step in because the situation was getting a little out of control. Especially the example in the text with the women who is addicted to alcohol who drinks before she go drive in her car. The camera crew just follow her actions instead of stopping her before she go drive her car drunk. Weakening Families

...Samira Garner Sociology IP 4 Professor Smith American InterContinental University Online April 16, 2012 I agree with experts that weakening families are the cause of some of the problems society faces today. There isn’t enough discipline, morals and value put into the children anymore. Parents have become too lenient with their children and this is why things are getting worse for them as they grow up. Since the 1960s, women are more independent when it comes to finances, which has resulted in high tensions in marriages. When a marriage consists of emotional and physical abuse, it is best that it is dissolved for the children’s sake. This on the other had causes children to suffer in school and social relationships in the wake of going through a divorce. Parents bring conflicts into their parenting and their romantic lives, drudging up their childhood memories and too often putting their own needs before their kids. The emotional toll of divorce becomes feelings of loss, rage and mourning for everyone involved. It also often becomes parentification of a child eventually (Castelloe, 2011). According to Castelloe, “alloparenting” or collaborative nurturing is one more way to set back the rupture of families. Extended family members can play a role in children’s’ lives to help them learn to control themselves emotionally and teach them how to tolerate frustration and prolonged gratification. But when couples have children later in life, there is no extended family...

Unlimited Access to Information

...our lives, and it has helped us get beyond the problems that trouble our world. During the mid-90’s internet had a revolutionary impact on information, since then information became information technology. Due to information storing, retrieving, transmitting data is much easier. Certainly, it is difficult to estimate the value of information technology in our society. Furthermore, many fields today highly depend on information technology, and it has opened doors to countless career opportunity for our generation. Information technology is bringing the world closer; there are no linguistic and geographical boundaries when it comes to sharing information. World as we know today has transformed in to global village. Information technology allows us to share information more rapidly and efficiently, in fact today we are able to share ideas with countries that are separated by not only distance but also language. Furthermore, information technology has also made communication cheaper and effective. Before internet existed communication solely dependent on postal and telephone services, but today we have text messaging, emails, video conferencing for instantaneous communication. Information technology has also given business around the world new prospective and possibilities, due to that reason world economy has seen an improvement in past few decades. To this day and time, information technology allows us to keep business open round the clock and seven days a week. In fact people are...

The Creation of the Ocean Floor

...of it. Sea floor spreading and plate boundaries are not a common subject to anyone outside of a scientific or marine biology lab. The purpose of this paper is to identify plate boundaries. Compare and contrast ideas behind plate tectonics and the theory of the continental drift. There are many types of plate boundaries. Each one is unique in its own way. Below three of the primary types are described in detail. There are several natural events that occur as a direct result of plate boundary interaction. To properly understand the what and how of plate boundaries one must first know what they are. According to Annenberg Foundation (2014), “The border between two tectonic plates is called a boundary. All the tectonic plates are constantly moving — very slowly — around the planet, but in many different directions. Some are moving toward each other, some are moving apart, and some are sliding past each other” (para. 3). Divergent, convergent, and transform are the three primary types of plates. According to "Plate Tectonics" (2010) “A divergent boundary occurs when two tectonic plates move away from each other. Along these boundaries, lava spews from long fissures and geysers spurt superheated water. Frequent earthquakes strike along the rift. Beneath the rift, magma—molten rock—rises from the mantle” (divergent boundary). According to "Plate Tectonics" (2010), “When two plates come together, it is known as a convergent boundary. The impact of the...

Parenting Styles Paper

...parenting styles. They consist of the authoritarian parent who rules with an iron fist. They believe what they say is law and there will be no straying from their rules. Their children are also expected not to disagree in any manner. The second style discussed by Baumrind is the permissive parent. These parents are a little more laid back and do not provide any consistency in their rules or consequences. “They place little or no limits or control on their children’s behavior” (Feldman,p.252). The third type she discusses is the authoritative style. These parents create set boundaries for their children while remaining firm and loving. Respect

...or being rude to them means respect. It also means that there are boundaries that should not be crossed. These boundaries are social lines that should not be crossed under any circumstance. These boundaries change depending on who it is (friend, colleague, family member, etc) and the time you have known that person. The more familiar the person, the fewer boundaries there are, and the higher up in society, the more respect and admiration they deserve. For example, the boundaries towards your boss are difference than your friends’ because there are many conversational topic that you don’t discuss with your boss in order to not cross those lines. In all, respecting someone is admiring him/her for strengths and not criticizing for weaknesses. 2) What does respect look like? Respect presents itself in different ways in different cultures. In the western world, respect was often shown as how conservative people dressed or spoke to each other. For example, in order to go to church, women had to wear long skirts and use a veil in their head. This showed that they had respect toward religion and God. Now days, people exhibit these respect traits less in a physical way because each person wants to be free in their development of personality that came about the cultural revolution in the 1960s. People now dress more liberally, but it doesn’t mean we have lost al respect towards one another. Respect is shown today on the way we interact with other people, having in mind that communication...

Bodies Out of Bounds

...The body transgresses many boundaries; no matter how hard it tries to confine itself to its perfect dimensions.  Dana, the protagonist in the novel Kindred by Ocatvia Butler, travels back in time to a different era in which she must learn to adapt or suffer dire consequences.  The nameless narrator in the novel Bodies Out of Bounds by Jeanette Winterson leaves her lover when she finds out the latter has cancer.  As pointed in the article, “Unbearable Weight” by Susan Bordo, society has hardwired into us that there is such a thing as the perfect body. All of these characters try disparately to attain perfection in their lives. There are various boundaries being crossed in Kindred.  The most obvious being the different time eras.  Dana is transported to the antebellum South where she meets her ancestors.  She does not want to be there.  However, she knows that if she does not keep saving Rufus, her very own existence is threatened.  So she will do anything, however awful, to ensure that Hagar is born. Dana hopes that Rufus will not grow up to be like his father.  The question of whether Dana can save hime from his culture is always omnipresent.  Although she would much rather stay and live in her comfortable home in California, she is willing to leave it behind to save Rufus.  Dana does not belong in this era and yet the fate of her family and her very self depend on her. The second obvious boundary that Dana crosses is landscape and geography-wise.  California still was not part...

Understanding Cultural Landscapes for Successful Global Business

...Executive Summary The article begins by questioning the place of cultural boundaries in the place of international business. However, how can we really learn and incorporate another culture into own businesses practices. The article questions our methods of learning another culture and challenges us to no just learn the “black and white” rules of another culture but to actually learn about the settle differences and apply them to our daily practices. It will take more than studying and reading about other cultures to fully understand and connect with people of other cultures. The U.S department of education held a conference to evaluate the meaning of globalization and what it meant to different people around the world. People who oppose the idea of globalization view it as a tool to impose western cultural values on different cultures around the world. Many people view globalization as a tool of “cultural imperialism”, in which America can spread their pop culture and consumer values for their own elfish needs. However, others view globalization has necessary and essential agreement between nations to effectively and efficiently spread world resources. These people believe that globalization can help stem worldwide poverty in some areas and stimulate positive growth in developing countries. From a more objective perspective, globalization is the “embodiment of the world merging into massive transactional networks and nexuses of countries in terms of trade, commerce, capital...

How Tectonic Plates Affect The Earth's Landscape

...“ In 1912, a German scientist named Alfred Wegener came up with a radical idea: that continents move along the Earth’s surface,” (Earth’s continents, 9). This is one of the most important things to know about continental drift because it’s the theory that started it all. Wegener’s theory was originally dismissed because it seemed impossible. However, around the 1960’s scientists came back to it after they noticed a rige in the ocean that was splitting the crust. After that, scientists came up with the theory of plate tectonics. But who knew that continental drift would change so much about the Earth’s landscape. While the continents were drifting apart, “the collision of the Indian subcontinent and Asian continent created the Himalayan mountain range” (Continental Drift). The collision of the plates created one of the Earth’s biggest and most famous geographical features, meaning that the drifting continents have lots of power over the appearance...

Evaluate How Plate Tectonics Theory Helps Our Understanding of the Distribution of Seismic and Volcanic Events.

...Evaluate how plate tectonics theory helps our understanding of the distribution of seismic and volcanic events. Plate tectonics is a relatively new science. It’s partially explained in the sense that we still don’t know fully about how the plates came together, what they were before they were the seven continents we know today. We already know, or have a theory, about what our world was like a long time ago and so if we already know that the plates can pull and push against each other, then surely there must have been a different set up to the one we have now. There is a theory that we were once a supercontinent called Pangaea that began to break up around 200 million years ago. Using plate tectonics, we can explain, predict and see which type of seismic and volcanic events are related to plate tectonics, using more theories like Pangaea to explain them. Covering our earth’s surface there are seven major plates. These plates cover the inside structure of our earth, which consists of our inner core, our outer core, the mantle and then the crust which is what the plates are made out of. Plate tectonics is the theory of these plates moving along the earth’s lithosphere. The lithosphere is in the upper mantle and the lower crust and is responsible for continental drift. This is also because of the convection current running underneath and pulling and pushing the plates apart and together, causing them to converge and destruct. There are two types of plates, oceanic and continental...
