Abstract / Proposal
The purpose and frame for this study is to look at the various MBA programs in three types of colleges: state, private and for profit. The schools we selected for the study consist of Boise State University, Tulane University, and University of Phoenix.
Time Frame
The Time frame of the study will be November 11, 2013 through November 25, 2013.
Data Collection Methods
The study relies on personal accounts, student observations, and voluntary surveys. Interviews will also be conducted will local business leaders in order to give a secondary view on the appropriate school and gain an understanding of how they view the MBA program for a professional standpoint. In addition to conducting the personal accounts mentioned above the study will also incorporate research using the library, and internet (only professional and academic sources) to analyzing trends and patterns to try to determine which MBA programs will be more widely accepted in the business community. Also which students surveyed report they are the happiest, state, private, or for profit. We also intend to narrow the decision making process for students when they are considering an MBA.
Research Questions
The study looks at the overall organizational structure at each MBA program. Evaluate the mission statement of the organizations to determine if the respective organization is living up to their promises. We will look at how the three different programs differ, how they are alike, and provide support examples of some of the varying classes. We will then compare the statement with the product delivered to the students.
We will conduct surveys asking what former and current students looked for in a school, how they made their decision, and other relevant information to the study In addition, the study will look at accreditation and give a short history of the school and how long...

...Top Three Reasons Not to Get an MBA There is no question that everyone in today’s market was affected by the recession. According to Kimberly Amadeo, “An economic recession is when growth slows, usually due to a fall-off in consumer demand. As sales drop off, businesses stop expanding. As unemployment rises, and consumer purchases fall off even more, housing prices usually decline” (Amadeo n.d, What is Economic Recession? Para. 1). Many Americans have elected to go back to school and further their education toward an MBA to be more competitive in the job market. However, there are reasons pursuing an MBA or any grad degree may not be the best option. Such objections include cost of tuition, time spent away from work and family, and the job availability after graduation. Cost of Tuition The stress of paying the house, car, and credit cards can be overwhelming. Also individuals need to think about the cost of pursuing a higher education. “Although the cost of an MBA degree can very, the average tuition for a two-year MBA program exceeds $60,000” (Schwietzer, 2011. How Much Does It Cost to Earn an MBA? Para. 2). Many individuals will have to get a loan and pay interest for a considerable time. Also the cost of tuition continues to rise. “ Though MBA programs have multi-million dollar operating budgets, schools say tuition revenues cover less than half of their annual expenses, making cost-hiking a necessary evil. Each year, B-school......

Decision for Mba

...candidate for their position. The question, then, is how does one stand out and be recognized by a potential employer rather than simply getting lost in the mix? Many people turn to furthering their education by obtaining a Master of Business Administration (MBA) to give them an advantage over their peers. Although a person is furthering their education and refining their skills, the decision of obtaining an MBA is met with opposing views. One of the most debated aspects of an MBA program is its ability to set a person up for financial success. Many wonder if the benefits of the degree are worth investing in if it may limit options and create debt. In an article from CBS Money Watch, author Trunk (2011) comments that the amount of time one invests in getting an MBA could be applied to on-the-job experience instead. The author argues that experience will equip them as equally as investing that time in education only without having student loans. On-the-job experience is important, but continuing education and refining communication skills will help to broaden a student’s ability to apply oneself in the work place. Moreover, there is generally a financial earnings increase associated with successful graduates of MBA programs. In data collected from Occupational Outlook Quarterly in 2003, the median weekly earnings of a person with a master’s degree were approximately $422 higher than those without a degree (Lacey & Crosby, 2004-2005). That is $22,900 more...

The critical success in the future of a career depends on the ability to be called on for knowledge, expertise, and advice, for which an MBA is the vehicle that will provide my career the means to that end state. A graduate with an MBA is stereotypically regarded as more dependable, knowledgeable, and marketable. An MBA is sometimes called the golden ticket to increase in salary, career progression, influence, and power ((Rapert, Smith, Velliquette, & Garretson, 2004, p. 17). An MBA is recognized globally as a standard of excellence that is measured and weighted in today’s global economy. An undergraduate student has skills and knowledge, but armed only with this degree, the student has on touched the breadth of knowledge in key subject areas including economics, finance, strategic managerial principals, and analysis. The undergraduate is knowledgeable in the area of business perceptions and analysis, but is far from having the skills required to apply advanced theory and analytical practices in a competitive fast paced business environment. A Graduate student with an MBA has honed the skills to develop a solid......

Argument Essay

...I’m stuck! That is the simple explanation for wanting to pursue an MBA degree. I received my undergraduate degree in accounting and since graduating I have gained eight years of experience within the accounting and finance industry. Within this industry I have financial accounting experience and experience in financial analysis from working at a CPA firm, the public sector for the State of Alabama, a mid-sized insurance company headquartered here in Montgomery, AL, and now within the banking industry. With the exception of the CPA firm where I started out as entry-level, all of these places of employment I am and was a mid-level employee, where I am now stuck. To move out of the mid-level hole and into a position of management or at least a senior-level position within my current organization, an MBA is a requirement. Also, in today’s economic climate an MBA degree also creates a level of job security. An MBA degree lets people know that you have an increased knowledge of business acumen, which, therefore makes you a valuable asset to your company or organization. An MBA opens the doors of opportunity, such as being considered for advancement within my current organization, a position of higher pay and status with another company or laying the foundation to be a successful entrepreneur. Through my experience I have only worked in one environment in which an MBA degree wasn’t a requirement for advancement. As a staff accountant for the State of Alabama, they have a...

I have been working professionally for more than 15 years in challenging positions with engineering companies and have good experience with many of the problems businesses and markets are facing today. An MBA degree will help me find more employment opportunities and it will make me a more marketable professional. Although I want to start my own business and an MBA will help me do it. I am convinced that in today’s economy we need more job makers than job seekers. Earning an MBA is not a decision to be entered into lightly. The biggest disadvantage of taking an MBA program is its cost. The average cost of an MBA is estimated at $30,000 and there is significant time, attention, and energy involved, and there's no guarantee that I will land the perfect job after completing the program. In addition to this, getting an online MBA program will prevent students to have face-to-face contact and networking opportunities. The lack of student-to-student contact is also a disadvantage of an online MBA program.......

What is equally true is that for the first time, the world economy is truly global, where what happens in one part of the world is not only known almost simultaneously to the occurrence of the event, but the impact can be felt as well. Customers and competitors are no longer relegated to the geography that surrounds them. In fact, many businesses no longer have a traditional brick and mortar operation. Within this complex setting, the modern manager must still do what managers in every era have had to do - succeed. For many, the MBA continues to be the cornerstone for such success. ...with setting up of management institutes like IIMs and XLRI. Management education is now being also imparted by some of the engineering colleges in India. Management education has become a big and lucrative business. It has grown in USA from almost negligible 1322 MBA degrees being awarded in 1955-56 to 102,000 MBA degrees being awarded in 1997-98. But there are major problems associated with the way the management education is being taught and the content what is being taught. The major problem is that the curricula of business schools is seen as being too focused on analytics with little or no emphasis on problem finding and problem solving skills. It also lacks focus on integration of problem across various functional areas. It does not take the holistic picture into account. Another problem with the business education is that the research work done in most of the business schools is far away from the realty. The work does not address the challenges being faced by various business organizations across the world in day to day management. Another major challenge facing the management education today is that learning is not the aim of most the students but placements and networking are. The primary aim of any MBA graduate is to increase his contacts in college so that it helps him securing a better job at the end of the course. With constant focus on networking and securing a good placement students lose focus of a very important aspect that is learning and acquiring......

Pursuit of an Mba

...Pursuit of an MBA Pursuit of an MBA Today’s job market seems to be a free for all. There seems to be fewer jobs and millions of people applying. That being said, it seems very important in times like this individuals do all that they can to try and set themselves a part from the next person. Experience is an important factor to do this, but when that is not enough they must turn to school. An associate degree and a bachelor’s degree is sure to set individuals apart from someone with just a high school diploma, but what about those off us that need to be set apart from the others with college degrees. With this my pursuit of an MBA comes to play. In 2003 roughly 1.2 million college students competing with roughly nine million people who are unemployed. Seven years later I am sure these numbers have changed since then, this is a huge reason to why we need to pursue graduate degrees. In my case, I am very lucky to have a job; however it is not what I am looking for. I constantly apply for other jobs and never even receive a call back on anything. I knew if I wanted to change things and eventually provide for my family I was going to need to stand out. I feel going back for my MBA will instantly separate me from the millions of others who have Bachelor’s degrees. I feel with my MBA and with my experience I am sure to catch the attention of employers. Once their attention is caught, I am able to have the chance to sell myself to them and why I am the......

Returning for Mba

...stability is on everyone’s mind. The pursuit of a Masters in Business Administration (MBA) was necessary to assist in the preparation of my future. Following are some of the reasons for returning to school and the objections voiced by others and sometimes from within. Career Investment The first reason for returning to school is for a career investment. A job is a valuable asset in life. According to a news release by the Bureau of Labor Statistics the average person changes jobs 11 times during the ages of 18 and 27 ("Number of Jobs Held – A Longitudinal Study," 2010). Unfortunately job stability is on everyone’s mind and the lack of necessary workplace skills can lessen the stability one has in an organization. Also, most corporations prefer to hire younger candidates over older candidates; by completing the MBA program at a younger age the opportunity for a long term career or investment is potentially stronger. An obstacle to overcome is when someone is just thinking about a career; the initial obstacle becomes reasons why the career choice will not happen. However, when planning a career the same obstacles become problems and situations to solve. Often the avoidance to commit to an idea is due to the thoughts of wasting time or not making the right choice and something going wrong. Increase Job Retention and Increase Pay Another reason to continue education for a MBA is the benefit of professional success through the employer. Today employers view......
