The Things They Carried Analysis

...“The Things They Carried” “The Things They Carried” tells about the side of war that you don’t read about in history books. The author, Tim O’Brien, does outline with great detail what the soldiers in this specific battalion carried, but in a way that you don’t normally read or see. O’Brien does list off the necessity items (can opener, pocket knife, mosquito repellant, etc.) but he also tells what each individual soldier carries because they are just that, individuals. No two have all the same items for the same reasons, each mans pack and artillery is tailored to suit his individual needs. The central character, First Lieutenant Jimmy Cross carried letters from a girl named Martha. “Rat Kiley carried comic books. Kiowa, a devout Baptist, carried an illustrated New Testament.” Out of fear, Ted Lavender carried thirty-four instead of the typical twenty-five grenade launcher rounds when he was shot down. Lavender also carried tranquilizers to help him cope. It’s this detail that helps this story stand out from the history books. We are told why each man carries certain things and this helps us to connect with the men on a personal level. We follow as Cross looks for comfort in the letters from Martha and eventually realizes that he is searching for something that probably isn’t there and destroys them along with the photographs of her. What I take away from this story is that war is very impersonal and at the same time very individualized. Each man contributes......

How to Ask a Reference Letter

...------------------------------------------------- 如何问人要推荐信?How to Ask for a Reference Letter? 来源: 颜示硼的日志 原作者:Jodi Glickman Brown is a speaker, author and entrepreneur. She is the founder of communication consulting firm Great on the Job. You can follow Jodi on Twitter at @greatonthejob or on her blog at www.greatonthejob.com/blog. In the 2009 film "Up in the Air," Natalie Keener decides she can no longer stomach being part of a corporate firing squad and quits her firm. Her mentor, played by George Clooney, behaves as the magnanimous gent we all know him to be: he writes a glowing reference letter on her behalf, addressed simply "to whom it may concern." In the real world, getting a reference letter is far more difficult and often a source of much anxiety. Whom to ask, how to ask, what to say? But getting an outstanding reference letter is entirely within your control and easier than you think, even if you don't have a benevolent benefactor at your back. Here are three tips to ensure your mentor, former boss, or academic counselor writes you a rave review: 1. Highlight their qualifications 2. Provide a template 3. Offer a "no questions asked" policy Let's look at each of these individually: Highlight their Qualifications When reaching out to ask for a letter of reference, explain up front and center why it is that you value that person's opinion and respect their professional expertise enough so that you chose them (of all people) to vouch for you in......

Ilnesses Found in Communities

...Appendix B Together We Stand Letter Outline Learning Team B Doris Torres, Edgardo Martinez, Henry Hector University of Phoenix HUM/114 Week Four Individual Assignments April 30, 2011 Peter Ciccotelli Un-explained Illnesses Spreading Through Our Community Searching for answers to the cause of the mysterious sickness affecting our community. It has come to our attention that many families in our community are suffering from similar illnesses: seizures, learning problems, and hyperactivity. Some citizens in our community have shared concerns with the city council and others have expressed their concerns with the local health department. In researching these unusual events we have learned that a company in our local community is practicing unsafe chemical disposal, which is the cause of these unexplained illnesses.   In an effort to correct this dilemma, we have researched for facts, and found this company negligent of its decision to build on recorded disposal sites. We reach out to all citizens of our community and stand together to express our concerns to the developers, city council and environmental health department that what has evolved is unacceptable. In review of our findings, we have to make a decision about what action should be taken to best solve this problem. We will adhere to the readers to decide what reasonable action measures should be taken and proceed accordingly. Strategies we would apply when investigation the problem: generating......

Prah V. Maretti

...Prah argues that he is first in time and he had the right to the light and air first and that it would lessen his enjoyment and use of his property to have the sunlight blocked. Muretti argument is that the most important right of a landowner is the right to use their property. His house complies with the laws and statutes and therefore should be allowed to be built. Then the dispute arose… There several alternatives to litigation that may be applicable in this situation as trial is expensive. Our suggestions are: 1. The first approach is to send a Demand Letter which details our demands to the other side. In our case it is the location that the house is being built. We would outline what we wanted and the action that we are planning to take if our requests are not met. The benefits of a demand letter are, predictably, straight forward. There is no dancing and no posturing; the opposing party knows where we stand and has the opportunity to accept or reject our offer....

Scarlet Letter Summaries

...The Scarlet Letter summaries. Chapter 1 This chapter somewhat introduces seventeenth-century Boston, where a group of gloomy, sad Puritans stand in front of an old prison in Boston, which seems to be a horrible and degrading place. By the descriptions given (heavy oak door, with spikes) it sounds like the prison is meant to keep and hold deadly murderers and ax murderers. The area around the prison is gray and gloomy. Decay and ugliness are in the author's descriptions, the only thing that sticks out is a lovely wild rosebush, blooming by the prison door. I believe the rosebush links us to Hester. They are both in full bloom, the rosebush in numbers of roses, and Hester in her humiliation. They both stand out. Chapter 2 The chapter opens to townspeople talking about Hester Prynne’s sin. Hester comes out of the prison and walks to the scaffold wearing an elaborately embroidered scarlet letter A on her breast, and carrying a small infant in her arms. When she did this she was to be ashamed of her sin, and the townspeople made mockery and fun of her. One of the most ugly woman in town implied that she be killed for her sin. As Hester looks out over the crowd, she realizes that her future will be lonely, being alone. Just her daughter and herself. When she realizes this, she squeezes Pearl so hard she starts to cry. The market place is described as the punishment of Hester. She was compared to Mary. Chapter 3 While standing on the platform, Hester sees and...

Marketin Management

...Chapter Two – What is Marketing Management and what do product managers and marketing managers do?   The Meaning of the terms Marketing Manager and Marketing Management   Traditionally if a person had the title of “manager,” it meant that s/he had the responsibility to help guide the activities of at least a few employees. While this terminology has changed over the years, we still consider someone who has the title of ‘manager’ to be responsible for overseeing the allocation of resources for the organization. For example, as an ‘individual contributor’ I might have the responsibility of performing certain work (for example, writing marketing literature for the firm’s products), but not be responsible for the activities of anyone other than myself. In high technology industries, the word manager is often replaced with “Director” to indicate that a person has primary responsibility for a certain organizational function. For example, the ‘marketing director’ may be responsible for all marketing activities in the firm. At other firms, the term ‘marketing manager’ would be used to describe the same thing. In some organizations, the Vice-President of Marketing may perform the same functions. The term Product Manager is often used in high technology industries to assign responsibility to a specific individual or group for the successful supervision of all marketing activities related to a specific product or service. Sometimes the product manager’s responsibility is defined...

First Amendment Issues

...Morris W. Ricks Dr. Mindel Speech 101.102 Due Date: June 28, 2011 Persuasive Speech Outline: The USA PATRIOT ACT I. Introduction A. What if your home was raided by the police, and when you asked to see a warrant, an officer handed you a letter signed by the desk sergeant? What if the same officer informed you that he’s taking your cellular phone, because your calls had been monitored? He arrests you, never informs you of the charge, and if released, tells you that you can’t discuss the incident with anyone? You being a well versed citizen of your constitutional rights under the law begin to inform the officer of the first ten amendments, called the Bill of Rights, and your rights have been violated. What if the officer told you that two weeks prior the city legislators got together, and decided that catching criminals has become too difficult of a task? So, they got rid of the first, fourth, fifth, and tenth amendments of the Constitution and now citizens only have six? Well, you would probably advise the officer to zealously avoid the narcotics section of the evidence room. However, what if I told you that this ridiculous scenario I just described is in fact current law at a Federal level, and if all of us as citizens continue to turn a blind eye to the impact this law is having on our way of life, we will watch the very rights I have previously stated slowly, but assuredly dissipate. B. The first article of the U.S Military Code...

Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord, 20 always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. 21 Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ Historical Analysis In regards to authorship and recipient, there are disagreements in the many opinions of scholars. In the thought of authorship, “a good number of scholars have esteemed Ephesians as “the crown” of Paul’s thought.” However, according to O’Brien, “contemporary scholars, who have claimed that Paul was not the author of Ephesians, have maintained that the writer of the letter used the literary device of Pseudonymity.” Yet O’Brien indicates the external evidences which cannot be denied. Irenaeus quotes Ephesians 5:30, with the introduction ‘as blessed Paul declares in his epistle to the Ephesians.’ In fact, Irenaeus attributed Ephesians to Paul on a number of occasions…In the third century it was regularly attributed to Paul by both the orthodox and their...
