Chapter 12 Case study - Too many bumped fliers

1) Is the decision support system being used by airlines to overbook flights working well? Answer from the perspective of the airlines and from the perspective of the passenger.
It is working well for the airlines only, as they can fill their flights and save at least a billion a year. The customer on the other hand is not happy about their strategy, It’s very frustrating to get to flight within the allowable time frame to be told you cannot get on. This may affect a lot of their plans causing them to seek other airlines.

2) What is he impact on airlines if they are bumping too many passengers?
The impact is the most popular routes which often sells out leaving some passengers stranded.

3) What are the inputs, processes and outputs of the DSS?
The inputs are the historical records of no-shows on flights and looks at the rates at every fare level available. The Processes are the examination of the fares people are booking on each upcoming flights and take other data into account. The outputs are the numbers of no-shows on a particular flight, based on which fares passengers have booked, and overbook the flight accordingly.

4) What organization and technology factors are responsible for excessive bumping problems?
The airlines and analysts are responsible for the excessive bumping problems.

5) How much of this is a problem? Explain your answer?
The inconvenience for the customer is a problem. They may not be able to board the fight to get to there planned destination if they arrive to the airport late. However being a past employee of a major Airline I fully understand the necessity of overbooking. The cover the cost of fuel and to maximize on profits, each flight need to full. To my knowledge Delta has always analyzed the pattern and overbook flights by 1-10
