Topic Reflection: Diane Lewis

Topic Reflection: Diane Lewis

I am always amazed by the strength these women encompass as they discuss the tragic events that led to the death of their loved one. Although I do realize that Diane is in a place in her bereavement where she could recall her story without emotional breaking down, I still feel like a person has to overcome so many obstacles before they get there which takes a substantial amount of strength and resilience. Further, Diane was able to provide great tips not just as a survivor of a great loss but also as a hospice provider, which I felt, was very valuable to a future clinician such as myself.
Diane discussed having her clients sit in the guilt and their current emotions, as she says this could be helpful in certain situations. This was so powerful because many times I find myself wanting to move my clients from this guilt space into a more forgiving and peaceful state of mind. I never thought that sitting in this guilt space with them as they navigate towards the next stage in their grief could be helpful because at times it can be very uncomfortable. Further, she discussed how she found peace, which was also a pivotal point in her discussion speech for me. When Diane stated that her current self, had to give her prior self, grace for the things that had happened, something clicked inside of me. Many times, especially in situations such as hers, we tend to really tear ourselves down about things that we can’t change or have no control over. I thought that it was so huge for her to give herself grace as the Lord had done so already. To continue, Diane also spoke to how the relationships within her family had also altered due to the death of Dane. I could relate to how Diane and her family had functioned because it seemed very similar to mine. Within my own family we rarely express…...

How to Write Reflection Paper

...How to Write Reflection Essay Posted by Splice, Essay Tips Chief Writer How to Write a Reflection Essay. Basically, writing a reflection essay is a good exercise to sharpen your critical thinking skills. You have to understand what it is that you have to reflect on before proceeding with the essay, otherwise you will only lose track of your ideas or, worse, you will not be able to write anything that will make sense. Keep in mind that a reflection essay is more like a journal where you jot down your thoughts or how you feel about a certain topic. Your topic may be a film, a book, an event, or just about anything. Before starting with your reflection essay, ask yourself a couple of questions, such as: how do I feel about this topic? How does it affect me, if it does at all? If it doesn't affect me, why? Notice that the questions are all personal. That is because a reflection essay asks you to express your insights. Knowing the answers to these personal questions can help you begin your reflection essay. Do not limit yourself to these three questions. Explore more that asks you to state your opinion. Leave out the facts first. Concentrate on your insights. After having the answers to the personal questions stated above, list your answers. Thereafter, summarize them into a single sentence. This will be your main controlling idea or central thesis which will guide you throughout the rest of your reflection essay. With your thesis statement, identify the arguments or ideas that......

Planning and Reflection Skills at Postgraduate Level

...Research Strategy & Project Plan 10 Problems Faced and Learning: 10 Learned Time Management Skills and Reflection Skills: 11 New Learning during the Research Project: Reviewing a Case Study 11 Conclusion from the Case study 13 My Reflections on the Research Questions: 13 References 14 Abstract The point addressed in this research document is the Importance of Planning and Reflection Skills at Postgraduate Level and also an assumption that post graduate students acquire planning and critical reflection skills automatically during their post graduate studies. Planning, critical thinking and reflecting are the pillars of the postgraduate study, managerial work and continuing professional development (CPD). “It is not sufficient simply to have an experience in order to learn. Without reflecting upon this experience it may quickly be forgotten, or its learning potential lost. It is from the feelings and thoughts emerging from this reflection that generalizations or concepts can be generated. And it is generalizations that allow new situations to be tackled effectively.” (Gibbs 1988) Reflection is a key element in any successful planning. You are probably a successful graduate and already have many of the skills required for postgraduate study. But there are some skills that assessed more stringently at postgraduate level, like planning and reflection skills. Task 1: Development of a Research Strategy Assignments are designed to allow you to......

Reflective Writing

...How do I . . . Write a Reflection? Why reflective writing? Reflection offers you the opportunity to consider how your personal experiences and observations shape your thinking and your acceptance of new ideas. Professors often ask students to write reading reflections. They do this to encourage you to explore your own ideas about a text, to express your opinion rather than summarise the opinions of others. Reflective writing can help you to improve your analytical skills because it requires you to express what you think, and more significantly, how and why you think that way. In addition, reflective analysis asks you to acknowledge that your thoughts are shaped by your assumptions and preconceived ideas; in doing so, you can appreciate the ideas of others, notice how their assumptions and preconceived ideas may have shaped their thoughts, and perhaps recognize how your ideas support or oppose what you read. Types of Reflection Experiential Reflection: Popular in professional programs, like business, nursing, forensics and education, reflection is an important part of making connections between theory and practice. When you are asked to reflect upon experience in a placement, you do not only describe your experience, but you evaluate it based on ideas from class. You can assess a theory or approach based on your observations and practice and evaluate your own knowledge and skills within your professional field. This opportunity to take the time to......

...teaching section I am going to use Gibbs (1988) Reflective cycle. This model is a recognised framework for my reflection. Gibbs (1988) consists of six stages to complete one cycle which is able to improve my teaching section continuously and learning from the experience for better practice in the future. The cycle starts with a description of the situation, next is to analysis of the feelings, third is an evaluation of the experience, fourth stage is an analysis to make sense of the experience, fifth stage is a conclusion of what else could I have done and final stage is an action plan to prepare if the situation arose again. (Source :Gibbs 1988) Gustaffsson and Fagerberg (2004) emphasizes on the advantages that could be gained from reflection mainly among registered nurses or RNs. They examine the questions on the implications of nurses’ reflections, the subject matter of their reflection and how they are able to deal with their reflection and how they improve their professional approach through reflection. The authors describe the experiences of the nurses and their reflection in relation to the nursing situations to understand how the nurses use reflection in their daily work. I am going to use the same approach to analyse my teaching section and improve where I have lacked to achieve required standards. Baird and Winter (2005) gave some rationale why reflection is required in the practice. They state that a reflect is to generate the practice knowledge, assist......
