A touchscreen is an electronic visual display that the user can control through simple or multi-touch gestures by touching the screen with one or more fingers. Some touchscreens can also detect objects such as a stylus or ordinary or specially coated gloves. The user can use the touchscreen to react to what is displayed and to control how it is displayed (for example by zooming the text size). The touchscreen enables the user to interact directly with what is displayed, rather than using a mouse, touchpad, or any other intermediate device (other than a stylus, which is optional for most modern touchscreens). Touchscreens are common in devices such as game consoles, all-in-one computers, tablet computers, and smartphones. They can also be attached to computers or, as terminals, to networks. They also play a prominent role in the design of digital appliances such as personal digital assistants (PDAs), satellite navigation devices, mobile phones, and video games. The popularity of smartphones, tablets, and many types of information appliances is driving the demand and acceptance of common touchscreens for portable and functional electronics. Touchscreens are popular in the medical field and in heavy industry, as well as in kiosks such as museum displays or room automation, where keyboard and mouse systems do not allow a suitably intuitive, rapid, or accurate interaction by the user with the display's content. Historically, the touchscreen sensor and its accompanying controller-based firmware have been made available by a wide array of after-market system integrators, and not by display, chip, or motherboard manufacturers. Display manufacturers and chip manufacturers worldwide have acknowledged the trend toward acceptance of touchscreens as a highly desirable user interface component and have begun to integrate touchscreens into the fundamental design of

... desktops, and just the general process of using a computer can be frustrating. A “touch-screen” made it much easier for a user to navigate around their computer, cell phone, laptop or tablet. Not only did the touch-screen make things more simple, it also made devices smaller and more portable. There is no need for a physical keyboard if you can use a touch keyboard built right into your device. HISTORY E.A. Johnson developed the theory of a touch-screen in 1969. This touch-screen was of CAPACITIVE technology and developed for air traffic control. He also developed a RESISTIVE technology around the same time. The two different types remain the most popular still to this day. CAPACITIVE TECHNOLOGY Capacitive screens are made up of 3 key components: first, a glass substrate surface; then, a transparent conductive layer; and last, a thin transparent surface. Capacitive technology works when a person touches the screen, a charge is transferred to the body and back to the screen. The device recognizes the charge or touch; Then, the processor computes the specific instruction back to the screen of the user. Smartphones and tablets typically use capacitive technology. RESISTIVE TECHNOLOGY A resistive screen is made up of 4 key layers: first, a glass substrate surface; then , non-conductive separator dots; next, a transparent conductive layer; and finally, a flexible transparent surface. When a resistive screen is pressured the top sheet is pushed back toward the...

Pointing Devices

...and the insertion point on the screen. Examples of pointing devices are mouse, trackball, touch pad, pointing stick, joystick, touch screen, light pen and graphics tablets. A mouse is a computer device, which has a ball sealed at the bottom. It is attached with a cable to the system unit. When rolled on the flat surface, the movement of the ball will generate electrical circuits, which are then sent to the computer. The movement of the mouse controls the insertion point and pointer on the screen. Moving the mouse allows user to positions the pointer or cursor an indicator on the screen that shows where the next interaction with the computer will take place. When the mouse is moved to the left, the pointer will move to the left, when the users move it to the right, the pointer on the screen will move to the right. Many users turn to the mouse as a quick substitute for some functions of the keyboard. There are various types of mouse operations such as point, click, double-click, right click, drag and so on. A cordless mouse users infrared remote transmission to communicate with the computer. Normally there is an IrDA (Infrared Data Association) port on the system unit to receive the signals sent by cordless mouse. A trackball is a pointing input device with a ball on the top. It is a type of upside-down mouse. The ball is manipulated by palm or finger. As with a mouse, movement of the ball causes electrical circuits, which are sent to the computer. The corresponding movement of...

Emerging Touchscreen Technology

...Emerging Touchscreen Technology Touchscreen displays are becoming more common than ever before. Almost every type of device you can buy has an option for touch screen; phones, computers, DVD players and also televisions. It is becoming more beneficial to use rather than the old fashion push in button. One of the many benefits of having a touch screen is that it is much more convenient for those with larger hands. Many cell phones that we used to carry had such small buttons; you would literally have to use your finger nails to press them in. Also, there would be complaints about buttons sticking, and breaking off, making them nearly impossible to use. According to the article Touch Screen vs. Tactile Controls, the only benefit the button has over touchscreen is that you won’t have as many smears on the screen. Even though the cost to have a touchscreen is almost double that of a push button, consumers seem to want to keep upgrading their devices, just to have the next best thing. And as more companies started to develop full touch screen cell phones, other devices were stepping up. Touchscreen Today The tablet is one of the most convenient devices you would want to own. Your tablet is like a mobile computer, like a laptop but a little more discreet and easy to carry. Unlike the laptop, a tablet can use 3G to connect to the internet from almost anywhere. A disadvantage of the tablet compared to a laptop, is the fact that you can’t use it in your lap, therefore...

...CIS 375 Assignment 1: Multi-touch screens VS mouse driven screens Frisch Adanou Instructor: Prof. Kourosh Samia 22/10/14 VS VS 1. The design of an application always requires metaphors in order to make the interface easy to use once the user lays hands on it. However, with the appearance of touch-based computers, the regular metaphors built around click and drag have gone through a shift of usage and implementation like you’ll see in the following examples: Metaphors Metaphors Touch Screen Touch Screen Regular Screen Regular Screen Desktop Desktop Scroll Scroll Zoom Zoom Figure 1: Regular and touch screen metaphors As you can see on the above picture, both types of screens share common metaphors but how those metaphors are implemented and used on both screens differs. 2. Different kinds of interaction types and styles apply to both kinds of monitors and here are few: * App startup: Usually, double clicking an app on a regular screen used to help start it up but on a touch screen, everything is very intuitive so since the users already know they can interact with the screen, they can just tap the app and it starts right up. * Navigation: When an app is opened...

Computer

...Input and Output Devices The devices which are used to input the data and the programs in the computer are known as "Input Devices". or  Input device can read data and convert them to a form that a computer can use. Output Device can produce the final product of machine processing into a form usable by humans. It provides man to machine communication. Before a computer can process your data, you need some method to input the data into the machine. The device you use will depend on what form this data takes (be it text, sound, artwork, etc.). Similarly, after the computer has processed your data, you often need to produce output of the results. This output could be a display on the computer screen, hardcopy on printed pages, or even the audio playback of music you composed on the computer. The terms “input” and “output” are used both as verbs to describe the process of entering or displaying the data, and as nouns referring to the data itself entered into or displayed by the computer. Below we discuss the variety of peripheral devices used for computer input and output. Input Devices Keyboard: The computer keyboard is used to enter text information into the computer, as when you type the contents of a report. The keyboard can also be used to type commands directing the computer to perform certain actions. Commands are typically chosen from an on-screen menu using a mouse, but there are often keyboard shortcuts for giving these same commands. In addition...
