Tourism sector in Barcelona

Tourism is something attractive to tourists because people attract people. According to the book
La imagen percibida por los turistas de la ciudad de Barcelona by Espelt and Benito, conveys the idea of

“priori perception is the mental construction that one makes about a place without having a physical connection with it; the in situ perception is the one that the tourist makes mixing the imagined and the reality; and the a posterior perception is the idealized one that we bring with us from the places”

For over 200 years Barcelona was under Muslim rule and following the Christian reconquest it became a country of the Caroligian Empire. From the 15th to 18th centuries Barcelona entered a period of decline due to their economic and political independence management problem issues. A period of cultural recovery began in the mid 19th century with the arrival of the development of the textile industry and finally on the 20th century the widespread urban renewal throughout Barcelona city culminated in its landmark Eixample district as the place of the most distinctive Catalan art nouveau/modernista buildings area. Only 20 years ago from today, Barcelona hosted the Olympic games and this was the key issue to reafirm its potential as one of the attractive touristic city in Europe.

Nowadays the economic crisis is affecting many different business markets and several of the companies are forced to close due to its incapability of maintaining a profitable financial report. This eventually creates unemployment rate to increase and will lead to a limitation on their spendings. One of the first things most of the people tend to cut from their incomes is luxury goods and pleasure services. Nevertheless, the UNWTO (UN World Tourism Organisation) still expects an increase in the international tourism in Europe by 4% from 3% and the number

Issues in Barcelona

...1- Overcrowding the city Barcelona attracts high visitor numbers from within Spain and internationally. Visitors for both long and short city-breaks are most concentrated during the summer peak season. Visitor’s interests are also diverse from the cultural and architectural, to the shopping and beach holidays, and for the young, the thriving nightlife is the key. All these elements combined turn Las Ramblas, the Sagrada Familia and other tourist attractions into a slow moving mass of people. This means that the structure and layout of the city is concentrated in a small central area and produces massive over-crowding in the city, on the beaches and at the attractions. In practice, it is important to ensure that tourism is distributed throughout the city, also because Barcelona cannot tolerate a tourism growth without limits. 2- Environmental damage Tourist activities have always operated in harmony with the surrounding environment. Considering the influence of the tourism sector on a global level, it is unavoidable that his impact, involves along economic benefits and comfort, also the negative consequences of social, cultural and environmental sustainability, especially if the tourist activity is not adequately developed, planned and carried out in the right way. In my presentation I’ll tell you what is gastronomic tourism, link between tourism and gastronomy, facts and stats, main destination and 5 major trends. It is also known as “food tourism”, “tasting tourism” or “culinary tourism”. This means there is a particular audience of people who are willing to travel the world in order to sample and experience authentic international cuisines. Gastronomy plays a major role in the way tourists experience the destination, and indicate that some travellers would return to the same destination to savour its unique gastronomy. Seven of the Hurdles That Need to Be Examined, in a Management Sense, Are

...Seven of the hurdles that need to be examined, in a management sense, are: 1. Cost overruns How much will they actually be and who will pay for them? Past experience says there will be cost overruns; moreover, many of those extra costs are often hidden from the public by being shifted to other budgets. Infrastructure costs are but one example of this. It is important that a tight rein on costs be initiated from the outset and that oversight be put in place. Scrutiny of estimates and the awarding of contracts by outsiders are essential. Another aspect of the issues in this area is determining how to ensure transparency. 2. The future use of sporting venues Using these venues once the games end can pose many problems; for example, some are so large that they will have to be reduced in size if they are to be profitable. Others are specific to sports that may attract little attention. There is a history of Olympic ‘white elephants’ that stand empty for years. Can someone find a way to move these elephants toward social benefit or commercial profit? 3. Transformation of Olympic housing to public housing Questions abound. What planning needs to be done to ensure that the housing constructed for the athletes actually will be used as mixed or affordable housing after the events? Will the housing for the athletes who participate in the Paralympics be set aside as housing for the elderly and disabled? What will be done with the massive cafeterias set up to feed those involved in the...

Views Against/for Bullfighting

...Bullfighting: Remembering Tradition In today’s version of bullfighting has drastically changed, what was once thought to be brave test between man and animal has been shifted to the advantage of man that it is no longer a test but rather a senseless slaying of an already weakened and disoriented animal. Before the bull even enters the arena they are taunted and abused. The naturally nonaggressive bulls are riled up by having their eyes rubbed with Vaseline, wet newspaper stuffed in their ears, and cotton stuffed in their nose to cut off respiration. Even the bull’s genitals are repeatedly stabbed, just to weaken the bull before its execution for the show. When the gates open, the disoriented bull tries to run for freedom but instead runs right into six men whose job is to defeat, or kill, the animal. One man is horseback using a spear; four others have barbed sticks, and lastly is the matador, who wears the iconic red cape (Lau). The bull’s pain continues as it is repeatedly struck in the shoulders and run to the point of exhaustion. It doesn’t take long for the bull to collapse and accept defeat. Finally, the matador reaches for his sword and delivers the final blow, slaying the animal in front of thousands of cheering fans. The treatment of bulls shows the harsh reality of how brutally and unethically bulls are treated today. The protesters believe bullfighting has become a completely different sport, and has lost its cultural tradition. Enthusiasts claim a ban on bullfighting...
