The Digital Age When you browse online, do you know your privacy settings? How important is your personal information to you? When you shop online, visit a social networking site, or just search the web, information such as your purchasing habits, your demographic, and your interests are being collected for marketers. There are those consumers, like Nicholas Carr who wrote “Tracking is an Assault on Liberty,” who believe that online tracking is a real danger is today’s society. He believes that online privacy is just an illusion and that your information is being collected whether you want it to be or not. He argues that personal data that falls into the wrong hands can be devastating leading to financial fraud or identity theft. Then there …show more content…

Search engines such as Google, Yahoo!, or Bing can then provide specific product suggestions that will likely be of interest to you. Let’s say you really enjoy your political debates and frequently search for the latest debates. The next time you are visiting a website you may see a news ad for the most recent debate. How many websites do you visit that provide you a free service? These apps and websites can remain available for free because of advertising. Advertisers purchase space on a website, or video space within an app. This keeps you from paying for services that you would normally pay for. Messaging services and apps like Instagram, Facebook, or Snapchat are able to provide you with a free product because advertisers pay to have their product shown. It all comes down to online tracking. “If Web users supply less information to the Web, the Web will supply less information to them.” (Harper, 537) If an advertiser can target your specific interests then you are more likely to visit their websites or buy their products. This is the biggest payoff to online tracking. There are ways for you to protect yourself while enjoying your personalized

Employee Monitoring

...Employee Monitoring: Employer Safeguard or Invasion of Privacy? Sarah L. Voorhees Employee privacy has been a controversial topic especially with the rise in internet usage, the popularity of social media increasing, and the addition of GPS to mobile devices. With these advances in technology there are numerous ways for employers to monitor their employees’ time at work. According to Evans (2007) as many as eighty percent of the employers, who employ twenty percent of the American population, monitor employees’ telephone conversations, e-mails, and voicemails. Global Positioning Systems (GPS) technology has made tracking the whereabouts of employees easier rather than tracking only information passed between employees and other individuals. The United States does offer privacy laws to help safeguard employees’ expectations of privacy; however, the laws are formatted around the physical realm such as desk drawers or an employee’s home, not an employee’s computer files or even social networking site (Riego, Abril, & Levin, 2012). It has become apparent that social media is here to stay. Social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter have changed how people communicate in their daily lives and even how organizations do business. Employers have begun using social networking sites not only to market themselves but also as a human resource tool, making themselves accessible to potential customers and employees alike. Some of the ways employers have begun utilizing social...

Google and Apple Know Where You Are, Maybe

...Introduction We live in a society where it is simply impossible to live without your smartphone tracking your location. There are various ways that location-based tracking is utilized on smartphones for good purposes; but what about the not so good purposes? People make very good use of the tracking software located on smartphone from looking up directions to a hotel to checking the local traffic updates while in route to work. And when completing these tasks, they may not know that those locations are actually being stored in the smart phone. The stored list of locations can be used to send out local ads or be used to target that individual. One must be aware of location-based tracking software located on smartphones. Location-based Tracking Apps There are many different applications that use location-based tracking. However, I only use two on my Android. The two that I use is GPS Navigator and Point. I only use GPS Navigator when I need directions to a particular place or need traffic updates when I am out of town. I use Point to find local restaurants, shops, movies, and businesses when I travel out of town. I do not use them very often. However, after using those applications, I un-install any updates for those apps and clear all cache on my phone. This will delete any saved information that was logged. ...communication with the driver. Every UPS driver automatically logs into the ODS system first thing in the morning. This allows dispatchers and center management to access the driver via his/her DIAD throughout the day by sending generalized text messages. Virtually all drivers start their day with a list of predefined customer pickup locations for that day. Thanks to ODS, the addition of a one-time pickup can be added to a driver's work list on-the-fly, enabling UPS to take best advantage of the geographic location of its entire fleet for servicing pickup requests. By using the DIAD, UPS eliminates the use of 59 million sheets of paper per year. The DIAD IV is the most comprehensive tracking device in the delivery industry, combining data collection and transmission technologies, digital signature capture, extensive expandable memory and rugged construction to withstand extreme temperatures and hard falls."
