Trail Running as a Hobby

Abstract
This is a short essay about trail running as a hobby. A number of health benefits are associated with running and a related discussion is seen. It also provides encouragement for the reader to try trail running personally.

As a boy I ran everywhere. On the ball court, on the field, to the barn and the pond, I ran and ran and ran. But as an adult, like most others, with the daily the activities of raising a family and making a living, running seemed to fade away. About ten years ago, after gaining twenty pounds since high school, I started running again. Running has multiple health benefits and it’s very inexpensive. It’s my favorite hobby and I’m a big advocate for running.
First and foremost, running is good for your health. It’s well documented that aerobic exercise helps maintain a healthy heart, and running is an excellent source of aerobic exercise. Many people have eliminated problems with high blood pressure by incorporating running several times per week. Additionally, by running one can gain muscle strength and improve lung capacity. These are two of the top ten indicators of longevity, which represents both length of life and level of health.
Running is also an excellent stress reliever. I find that when I have the most on my plate, running allows me to clear the cobwebs from my mind and think more clearly. As I begin to run, I think, breath in, breath out, left foot, right foot and the stress in my body begins to lift. Many times as I run, solutions to the problems I’m facing become clear. The tension that I’ve been carrying in my neck, back, shoulders and face melt away like a cube of ice on a hot summer day. Personally, I prefer to run outside on a trail run. The twists and turns, the ups and downs, the trees and nature create an environment that is not conducive to stress. This is my medicine that keeps me mentally healthy.
So many people struggle with staying in fit and in shape. Running, combined with healthy eating habits is a realistic way to lose weight or simply stay in shape. When one is physically fit, they look good and feel good. It boosts your confidence and self-esteem. How many people do you know who have great capabilities but lack confidence? When I finish a good run, I have an inner pride for my accomplishment and a security to step outside of my comfort zone without fear of failure.
If your health is declining, run. If the bulge around the middle is growing, run. If you’re stressed to a frazzle, run. Run toward health and happiness and don’t look back. The path of a million miles begins with the first step. Step up and be the best you can be. Run.

Creative Writing: The Kite Runner

...Boom!The gun goes off as everyone is staring. Boom! Boom! The sound of the gun echo's throughout the hills, and trails of the course giving me a perception of where I am heading to. The only thing on seen, in the start of the race, are the skedaddle of hundreds of feet running toward a remote place. Heart beats companion the aria of the foot stomps. Cacophonous breathing by my side lets me know that someone else wants to measure his limits. Everyone on the race with the same mentality to give it all. Steve Prefontaine, a National American championship once stated that “ To give anything less than your best is to sacrifice the gift” (Prefontaine) The question in my mind was, why train so hard, and not give it all I had in the race? That afternoon in the hot central valley I learned a lesson that running measures how though one is. A race measures the limits of the human body that only a few are willing to take upon. Runners can experience the receptivity of...

Personal Narrative: My School's National Honor Society

...needed to be myself. That is why I ran for office as the president of my school’s National Honor Society. A few of my tasks included leading weekly officer meetings, organizing the fall induction, cleaning beaches, and hosting holiday gift. I was inspired to become the president because of the powerful impact this club made on the community. I acquired an ample amount of skills that improved myself as a leader. But most of all, I learned the power of doing good for goodness sake. The joy of the people I helped was all the more satisfying. Giving back to the community became a hobby and it filled my heart with glee. Instead running traditional NHS projects, I spiced it up by motivating members to volunteer for causes that I felt needed more direct attention. These causes included raising money for victims of pancreatic cancer, children with leukemia, and providing Christmas presents for orphans in Honduras. Running for president is the best decision I made in my high school career. Through my service, I want to spread my never ending flame of happiness for the rest of my life. Another way I reached out in the community is by joining Junior Achievement. As a member of Junior Achievement, it was my job to attend teach-ins every week where I taught elementary students how to succeed in our thriving global economy. It was the perfect volunteering opportunity. I could receive service hours for having fun with kids! But, there was only one problem; I was terribly afraid of public speaking...

Geocaching Love

...just know me as TrailSteamer. What is this craziness I speak of? Simple, it’s called geocaching. ------------------------------------------------- I started geocaching as a way to lose weight. I have lost a little and I know I am more toned then I use to be. But I am still what people would call overweight. I prefer to be called curvy, womanly, or better yet just down right sexy. There is just more to me to love. I would probably lose more weight if I if I did not make such kick ass food. I currently work at a cupcake shop in the small town I live in. I work there to pay the bills while I’m working on psychology degree. I want to work with women who were in abusive relationships. For some reason I have never told my friends about my hobby or as I like to call it my other life. However, things in my world of geocaching is about to get interesting. Rosie couldn’t believe she had to come into work on her day off to learn how to use a fire extinguisher. It’s not like she meant to set the fire alarm off when she made a run glaze. Worst of all she forgot when she got dressed to go to her Zumba class when, Lisa, her co-worker texted her to remind her. So she had to go to work in a very unusual outfit. She was wearing fitted black sweat pants with a...

Gpp Picks

...Who Wants to Be a Millionaire: Week 1 NFL GPP Picks If you are reading this article, I think it is fair to assume that you are a fan of playing fantasy football in some regard. It’s a fantastic game that has become a hobby for football fans of all ages. There is a copious amount of ways to make playing fantasy football even more fun than it already is, but there are no methods better than introducing money. And thanks to DFS, money is aplenty this football season. DraftKings and FanDuel are both making millionaires out of players in week 1 of this NFL season, and it’s my job here to help you become one of those players. Cash games are great, and probably the smarter method of building a bankroll, but that’s not what we’re here to do. This is for those of you who want to go for it all, like I do. These picks are for those of you trying to turn $20 into $2 million (or $25 into $1 million). They are picks that I feel will have low ownership percentages, high scores, and therefore the potential to give you a greater chance at becoming a millionaire without the help of Regis Philbin. Quarterback: Jay Cutler (DK - $6,800; FD - $7,900) - I’m going to start my picks off with some serious stuff, so brace yourself… The Chicago Bears are going to lose week 1 against the Green Bay Packers. I know, riveting stuff. Joking aside, the Bears are very likely going to fall to the Packers as they so often do, and Aaron Rodgers is going to be really good. That means one obvious certainty:...

Through the Lens: a Different Perspective

...springtime aroma around me, I poise myself to get the perfect vantage point and hesitantly push down the glistening silver button on my camera thinking, “Is this how I want this moment to be remembered?” Through the eyes of many, a camera is just a tool that you point at an object to take a picture; to a photographer, it is so much more. According to Dictionary.com, the definition of photography is, “The process of producing images on a sensitized surface by the action of light.” However, there is one point that this simple definition fails to state, and that is photography is used to capture a single moment in time, in one frame. A single picture can tell a multitude of stories, and can hold countless memories. Whether done as a profession, a hobby, or a creative outlet, the art of photography can appeal to everyone in the world. Known as a “camera obscura,” the first elements of photography were shown in 384 BC when Mo-Ti, a Chinese philosopher, created the device (Camera Obscura History). The physics behind his invention was that when a lighted area was separated from a dark area with only a pinhole opening between them, it created an inverted image of the lighted area. This technology was further improved by inserting a lens to create a clearer picture (History of Photography). Since then, the art of photography has continued to evolve. Many photographers still rely on natural lighting in their pictures, however today photographers choose to use digital photo editing with programs...

Sexism in Politics

...Sexism in the Political Arena: How Gender Alters Political Representation Sarah Moore University of Pittsburgh Abstract: This paper explores the topics of sexism in politics- more specifically, how the underrepresentation of women has resulted both from differences in the genders (internal/psychological variances), and also circumstances that exist in the current political climate. It is important to note that there are two different sources of this problem, if not more. Internal characteristics that lead to the underrepresentation of women include how they perceive their environment compared to men, the fact that women believe they are less qualified than men, and that they are less competitive in a political environment than their male counterparts. In the external sphere, this paper examines how the facts that women partake in more household activities than their male spouses do and that they are less likely to receive political nominations from any of their peers affects their likelihood of campaigning for office. Sexism in the Political Arena: How Gender Alters Political Representation Since the birth of the American political system in 1789, the question of representation has always been one of the most significant topics in political discourse. This According to Gail Baitinger, Jennifer Lawless, and Richard Fox, “when the 111th Congress convened in January 2009, 83% of its members were men. Men occupy the governor’s...

...Professional Presence and Influence - C351 Richard A Kurtz Western Governors University A1. Models of Health and Healing The Era I health model is a “beginner” health model if you will, that uses a mechanical approach to health care, with a vision of you fix this, you cure that type of image. There appears to be no ties to mind/spiritual type healing that is noted in Era II, where self-awareness seems to show its’ face in regards to health and healing. The image that comes to mind is one of hard, cold facts; where reality is what you have, and the affliction of your health is nothing more than that. There will be no prayer or positive thinking that will help the body to become healthy again, and any thoughts of despair or feelings of depression were independent of the physical illness or injuries that are being experienced. Health care is still at its roots, with curing of common infections decades away, and thought of an organized health care system beyond the imagination. In this second era, the relationship of the person/human element becomes evident, and the emotional, meaningful and conscious model that has become so clear today is taking its’ baby steps into existence. The change of thought process as well as considerations of feelings and emotions of the person come into view as an important part of the healing path, and new emphasis is incorporated into the vision of health care. Systematic health care is well on its way, evidence based practice is in use on...
