Trains and their cars are incredibly heavy, easily more so than a regular car. It is absolutely necessary for safety to check both ways on a track, or on several tracks, before crossing. As a pedestrian, it is especially important to be able to hear and see, meaning hoods and headphones off. Even if you can’t see a train coming, sometimes being able to hear one coming makes all the difference. If you have a bike or a skateboard, or something of the sort, do not ride across the tracks. Again, check both ways, and listen for a train. If there is a train, wait for it to pass. Then walk across, emphasis on walk. Riding across can be just as much of a danger.
