Italy has been one of the most visited and renowned countries in the world for thousands of years. We are known for many things, the good food, the good life, the beautiful lands and sadly the mafia. Since the 18th century the Italian Organized Crime have infiltrated the social and economic life of many regions, in particular the South of Italy where the famous Sicilian Mafia was first born. Throughout the years they started to expand towards the northern regions, in particular in Campania. Here, in Naples, the Camorra put its roots in the middle of the 19th century. Soon the Camorra became a very powerful organization in the region and especially after the Second World War they started having a huge influence on the local economies and politics. Camorra is an organization that is both entrepreneurial and criminal. A Sort of criminal cartel which have affairs in all fields of the economy. There are many ways with which these families finance them selves. The most common one is the infamous extortion, an illegal way to get money from common citizens by threating them in some ways, including death. Other illegal fields where the mafia is present are the drugs and prostitution rackets. But the Mafia and especially the Camorra act also on many legal sectors of our economy and politic. Many labor unions are fluttered with “Camorristi” which take control of various building and road constructions all over the country trying to make as much profit as possible. From the beginnings of the 90’s the Camorra also took control of the industrial waste in Naples. They started to decide where and how to collect the trash and where to built the landfills. All of this under the eyes of the Italian politicians and the world. In 2008 a huge environmental crisis exploded based on this issue. Roads all over the city were floated with trash and cars could barely access the center of the city. Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, after his second reelection decided to start a campaign against this huge environmental issue and especially against this group of Organized Crime. The project never really worked. Still today the problem is present. One of the most beautiful cities in the country is getting ruined by it’s bad administration, where corruption is fully present. The problem is that is becoming a vicious cycle. Politics are more and more involved in this “dirty business” and if we, Italian citizens, do not do something, nothing is going to chance. Now with the new Prime Minister, Matteo Renzi, the situation is getting better, but very slightly. Not enough forces are put against the Mafia, which still acts as a total monarch all over Italy. In fact the problem now is not just restricted in the South, but it has expanded also in the northern regions. To recall a recent example, this year during the EXPO in Milan, was found that the “Ndranghete”, a type of Mafia originally from Calabria, controlled more than half of the building construction involved in the event. The force of order barely intervened and as usual the local administrations let go for another time. Although today there is more consciousness among the people about these criminals, while not so long ago was denied by politicians and considered just an urban legend .In fact all over Italy new initiatives anti- Mafia are springing up. Now schools face the problem with specifics lessons about it. But this is not enough to overcome the problem. New legislation need to be done and better administration need to be established. Even if probably the fight against the Mafia will never end we, Italian citizens, with the State and the police forces have to keep fighting in order to prevent them to completely take over the country. (per far sic he non prenda il sopravvento sull’italia)

Historical Research on Waste Management

...Historical Research on Waste Management Sean Depkin Jones International University Abstract Waste management is a necessary industry and has been traced back to 3000 B.C. It originally started off garbage dumps or landfills and has progressed to recycling facilities and incinerators that produce both heat and energy from the burned waste. It has been influenced by both motorized transportation and the advances in technology. The most influential person in the waste management industry in the U.S. has been Wayne Huizenga, who saw how to take smaller, independent companies and acquire them into the largest company in the industry. He was able to do that by using stock in his company to make the acquisitions instead of taking out loans from the banks. Waste management and corruption have always been associated with one another because of mafia ownership and even accounting debacles. It is a business that really did not take much to get into other than some capital and transportation. With the decline of available resources and the demand for fewer issues with hazardous waste, an advanced college degree has been necessary to get into management or in the design of the facilities and treatment of waste. Some countries such as Denmark have even advanced as far as to only use their landfills for about 6% of their waste, recycling and incinerating the rest (Buch-Andersen, 2005). Because of booming populations and economies, as well as the planet running out of room for...

Chuck Palahniuk

...Acclaim for Chuck Palahniuk’s Choke “Just as dark and outrageous as his previous work. … His voice is so distinctive that he exists as a genre unto himself.” —The Washington Post “Palahniuk’s language is urgent and tense, touched with psychopathic brilliance, his images dead-on accurate. … [He] is an author who makes full use of the alchemical powers of fiction to synthesize a universe that mirrors our own fiction as a way of illuminating the world without obliterating its complexity.” —LA Weekly “Puts a bleakly humorous spin on self-help, addiction recovery, and childhood trauma. … Choke’s funny, mantra-like prose plows toward the mayhem it portends from the get-go.” —The Village Voice “Oddly, defiantly, addictive.” happily —Daily News “[Choke] shines a flashlight into America’s dark corners. … As darkly comic and starkly terrifying as your high school yearbook photo.” —GQ “Palahniuk is a gifted writer, and the novel is full of terrific lines.” —The New York Times Book Review “[Palahniuk’s] most enduring trait … is that marvelous quicksilver voice of his. … The exuberance of his language makes it still worthwhile to brave these often chilly and dark waters.” —The Oregonian “Choke is another welcome antidote to antiseptic consumer life, and you can’t blame it for grabbing you by the throat.” —Maxim “Palahniuk is a cult writer in the truest sense.” —Entertainment Weekly “His subversive riffs conjure a kind of jump-cut cinema of the diseased imagination,......
