Trend Article Analysis University of Phoenix – MGT373 Jennifer Choy August 21, 2011

In this day and age there are millions of trends that are present in almost every industry. In order for an organization to be successful it is essential that they follow some of these trends so that their company appeals to people. This proves to be true for the event planning and convention industries. Two articles that pinpoint a couple different trends are “Nifty gadgets taking special events to a new level” and “

The article “Nifty gadgets taking special events to a new level” is a great example of trends within the planning and convention industries. In the years 2001-2004 these industries saw a huge decline in business. The reason for this was the failing economy. Companies and organizations could no longer fit events and gatherings into the budget. In 2005 event planning companies such as Dolce parties finally started to see an incline in corporate parties and events. However, these parties and events were at a much smaller scale. It was only the important people that were being invited to these gatherings because the budgets were still not back to where they were. Since the comeback of events was at a slow pace, event planners and convention industries decided to introduce some new gadgets to attract clientele. According to Stableford ( 2005)“Beyond the typical post-event surveys and evaluation of how many sales leads actually translate into qualified sales prospects and sales, electronics and chips now help companies analyze the effectiveness of their presentations and exhibits. For example, there are radio frequency identification badges to track where participants at a convention go, which workshops they attend and how long they stay there. 'The chips are getting relatively inexpensive, so much so that a company can evaluate which...

Normality of the Future: Trend Diagnosis for Strategic Foresight (Liebl 2010)

...Normality of the future: Trend diagnosis for strategic foresight (Liebl 2010) Table of contents 1. Summary of the article 3 2. Analysis of the strength and weakness of the argument 5 2.1 Strengths 5 2.2 Weakness 6 3. Implications for the top management 7 4. Conclusion 8 Appendix A 10 Appendix B 11 1. Summary of the article “In strategy it is important to see distant things as if they were close and to take a distanced view of close things” (Musashi 2009). * This article focuses on trend diagnosis for strategic foresight in its entirety. The author scrutinizes that although trend is an imperative concept in the strategic issue management, the interpretation of trend in strategic foresight is ambiguous. This paper conceptualizes, from a strategic point of view, trend as an innovation (socio-cultural) and elaborate the implications with respect to strategic issue diagnosis. (Liebl 2010) * * * * * The figure above (Liebl 2010) depicts an elaborate framework for conceptualizing trends. The strategic trend diagnosis has to deal with two different aspects of innovation: invention and diffusion. The invention aspect of a trend is identifying “The New” results from a transgression of contextual boundaries whereas the diffusion is a process of normalization (Normality and Abnormality) – i.e., a new socio-cultural practice becomes a social convention......

...Kuperberg, Arielle. "Westernization and Women's Bodies: An Analysis of Chinese Magazines" Paper presented at the annual meeting of the American Sociological Association, Atlanta Hilton Hotel, Atlanta, GA, Aug 16, 2003. Web. The article says that, in recent decades, Chinese culture has seen an influx of Western influence, following the opening of China to the "West" in 1976. This study examines the resulting Westernization of Chinese culture, specifically the trend toward the Westernization of gender and sexuality ideals. This is accomplished by conducting a forty year longitudinal content analysis of two Chinese magazines, "Women of China" and "Popular Cinema," by which it is determined if a trend toward Western ideals of gender and sexuality is demonstrated, by the portrayal of women bodies on the covers of these magazines. Results indicate that there is a clear trend in Chinese magazines toward Western ideals of gender and sexuality. This is demonstrated by a number of indicators. Chinese magazines in more recent years demonstrate an increase in the depiction rate of thinner models in conjunction with a decrease in the depiction rate of heavier models, a trend which indicates a movement towards bringing models in line with ideals found in Western magazines. Additionally, women on the covers of Chinese magazines in more recent years demonstrate an increased depiction rate of the superior palpebral fold of the eyelid, a feature often obtained through a surgical......

Sport Finance Article Analysis

...Sports Marketing Concessions Market Assessment The article I read for this analysis was Concessions Market Assessment, a brief overview of the current concessions market in sports stadiums. This article was published by the Sports Marketing Research Journal. The approach in this article was from an academic perspective. It broke down the industry under competitors and major suppliers. They estimate that game-day revenue from concessions, merchandise and parking valued 10.7 billion in the United States. The analysis was done on 122 major league facilities, including stadiums and arenas. It was interesting to see that a large majority of these facilities outsource their concession to third party, outside suppliers. Only 14 facilities handled concessions in-house. For those facilities that outsourced 41.5% of arenas and 28.3% of stadiums used Aramark as their food service company. Aramark has a strong lead, with the next closest company being Levy Restaurants. Levy holds 26.8% of arenas and comes closer to Aramark in stadiums, providing concessions for 25.4%. Also, of interest, this article noted the increase in scale of concessions at sports events. Many venues are now offering high class restaurants. This trend shows that people are looking forward to dining at sporting events, rather than avoiding stadium food. The addition of these upscale dining options also creates new opportunities for revenue. As opposed to pizza and nachos, stadiums can now offer high-end......

The psychINFO data base was used to measure the proportion of articles relevant to each school that appeared in the flagship publications. Keyword searches were used to retrieve all articles containing a specified word stems to identify articles within a behaviorist school (as cited by Robbins, 1999, pp. 118). IV. Eco365 Article Analysis

...Week One Article Analysis ECO/365 January 16, 2012 Week One Article Analysis David Colander defines economics as "the study of how human beings coordinate their wants and desires, given the decision-making mechanisms, social customs, and political realities of the society” (Colander, 2010, p. 4). Coordination in this definition refers to production content, method, recipients, and even quantity. To think like an economist one must analyze every situation by comparing the costs and benefits and make any decisions based on those findings (Colander, 2010). The study of microeconomics zeroes in on the individual and analyzes how economic forces affect the choices he or she makes. Economic forces will ensure that what people want and will pay to get will match what is available. This is the concept of supply and demand. If the prices are such that people are not willing to pay it to obtain an item or service, they will choose to buy less of it, not buy it, or buy a substitute. This is the working of the law of demand. The price affects both supply and demand. When prices increase, the demand decreases, and when prices decrease, the demand increases. In the law of supply, however, if prices increase, individuals and companies will increase the supply because the opportunity cost of not producing the product rises with the price (Colander, 2010). There are factors other than price that can lead to changes in supply as well as changes in demand. These could be......
