Setting and Narrator in Neil Gaiman’s “Troll Bridge”

“Three Billy Goats Gruff” has been Neil Gaiman’s inspiration for this short story “Troll Bridge”. However, many elements from the old fairytale has been replaced and Gaiman brings a more twisted and dark version on the table. The main character, Jack, meets a troll three times and, de-spite his selfishness, actually lets the troll eat him the last time. The ending of the story is unex-pected and provides no resolution but is a crucial part to Jack’s development. The story is split up in three parts where Jack is at three different stages in his life. Throughout the whole story, the narrator uses the setting to reflect Jack’s feelings and changes through these three stages.

It is a first person narrator and Jack is telling the story. In the first part of the story, the narrator is describing the setting positively and magical. Jack is 7 years old in this part and is very detailed with his description of nature and his fantasies, for example: “The light that penetrated the leaves was stained green and gold, and I thought I was in fairyland” (p. 60 l. 24-25). This makes the at-mosphere of the setting lively and Jack’s pureness as a child is present through what the narrator describes of the setting.

In the next stage of his life, Jack is 15 and the atmosphere of the setting changes. The narrator starts the part with telling the reader about how the fields in the area started to go as new houses and roads took over – even his own home is torn down (p. 63 l. 23-27). The immediate change of setting reflects Jack’s change as he goes through puberty – the child in him is torn down and is replaced by his new identity as a teenager. At this part, the narrator also starts to exclude things in the story, for example: “I was fifteen: I’d changed schools twice in that time. Her name was Louise, and she was my first love” (p.64, l. 3-4). Perhaps Jack omitted it because he did not think it was important enough to be in the story or maybe he would rather talk about exciting things – like girls. The narrator and setting in this part is all about Louise (his girlfriend-to-be). When they walk on the path he sees “the light of distant houses (that) shone like stars on the ground” (p. 65, l. 4-5) which is an example of how the narrator romanticizes the setting and reflects Jack at this stage of his life.

Jack is an adult in the last part of the story. The narrator becomes more concise than before and the setting has a dark and depressing atmosphere. His wife has just left him and he ends up taking a long walk where he describes his surroundings with “the trees were skeletal black against the harsh grey winter sky” (p. 67, l. 31-32). The narrator does not tell much about Jack’s feelings, but the setting clearly indicates his current state.
When Jack first stumble upon the bridge he sees it has a huge arching arc and he is impressed (p. 61, l. 11-12), but when he finds it again as an adult the bridge is filled with graffiti and trash is ly-ing around (p. 68, l. 17-20). These two settings can symbolize Jack’s development through the sto-ry – how he goes from an imaginative child to a depressed adult.

Jack has been a selfish man throughout the whole story by telling the troll to eat his sister and Louise instead of him. The troll never accepted those though and Jack had to promise to come back every time. The story ends with Jack giving up – he surrenders himself to the troll. The two of them switch bodies. The troll is happy as Jack and Jack feels more at home being the troll (p. 70, l. 4-10).
The narrator uses the setting to reflect Jack’s feelings and changes through the three parts of the story. In the first part, the setting reflects Jack as a child and how wonderful the world is there. In the second part, the setting reflects Jack as he goes through puberty. The setting in the last part reflects Jack as a depressed adult.

...assignment: Troll Bridge We live in a society filled with norms, solid framework and expectations. We are expected not to fart at meetings or to tell every stranger we meet about our sexual preferences. Although it may seem that these “appropriate” behaviors are a pure reflection of our true selves it is not, according to psychoanalytic Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung. All humans have deeply stored inside their brains a subconscious mind, which is where all our truly desires are suppressed. These desires can be expressed differently. To take an example: Writers are often able to access a collective unconscious and use it to create artistic literary work filled with symbolism and features which are interesting to the psychoanalytic critic. One of those writers is Neil Gaiman and in his short story Troll Bridge many psychoanalytical symbols can be interpreted. The story follows the protagonist and first-person narrator Jack and his life development. Every time Jack is in a changing period of his life he meets a troll, who says he wants to eat him. First time they meet, Jack is a 7-year-old boy who is out to explore the countryside. His surroundings change as he goes and he gives a detailed picture of what his curious eyes see. When he sees a bridge he is surprised that there is any token of the existence of humanity, so he must be quite far out. It’s under this bridge Jack meets the troll who completely untraditionally introduces himself with “I am a troll” (p. 3, l. 32). The Troll lives...

...much that they allow it to run their lives. It can only take one troll to make a users life miserable. Although online anonymity has a lot of negatives, it can be somewhat beneficial to users. It can allow the anonymous person to express his or her beliefs and opinions for everyone to see. Having said that, people don’t always use the privilege to speak anonymously. By allowing anonymity anyone can literally write whatever the user wants without any repercussions. Majority of the people are normally just being facetious when commenting on blogs just to get a rise out of some people and gain attention even if it may be negative attention. Cyber bullying can be very dangerous and illegal for the most circumstances poses as a threat. Threatening someone via online anonymously can still get the user in some trouble with the law. It is still considered assault or harassment on someone even when it is anonymous. Law enforcements have a way to track the anonymous attacks down and hit you with some charges. The head of the social media sites should have a higher punishable Consequence to users who do not follow the code of conduct when it comes to privacy terms. ...Market Mix: The Best Bang For Your Buck American InterContinental University April 5, 2012 Donald Buehrig Busn105-1202A-269: Introduction to Business Unit 3 Individual Project Abstract In this paper you will see how you can use the market mix to do research on a particular product. Using the four p’s to narrow down your choice in a flooded market makes you realize that everything that we buy has been thru some sort of research on how to appeal to the consumer. Choosing a product is easy, but choosing the right product takes some time to pick what would work best for the situation. This paper shows you that when marketing a product know the environments the surround your customer. For this paper the product was priced with in the budget, had a reliable product, placed in the right graphic area and promoted to the need of the customer. When choosing a product you must consider what the product means to you. I ask myself this question, “why do I want or need this product” before I purchase any large product. Once I answer this question then I start shopping around looking for the product that fits best. I have been in the market for a new trolling motor and decided on the Minn Kota riptide. Let me explain how I used the market mix in making my decision. First I put a limit on the price I was willing to pay for a trolling Motor. I was willing to pay a descent price for a descent product. Internet Trolls

...Internet Trolls In the past, bullying could be found in schools, in the workplace, and in sports. Nowadays, there is a new form of bullying called Cyber Bullying. Cyber bullies are also known as Internet Trolls. Lisa Selin Davis, an internet blogger, writes about her personal experiences dealing with internet trolls. She states in her blog that all kinds of people can become trolls, according to sociologists and psychologists who have studied online behavior. Three major types of trolls are, The Moral Crusader, The Hater, and The Debunker. All three spend time and energy engaging in virtual hate. A Moral Crusader is a person who thinks his or her way is the right way. They use their beliefs and morals to put others down. They try to convince others that their beliefs are better and superior then that of others moral beliefs. Some examples of moral crusader groups are called, “The Anti-Tobacco Lobby,” “Gun Control Lobby,” “Anti-Pornography Group,” “Pro-Life/ Pro-Choice Movement.” These are all examples of places crusaders like to project their strong opinions onto others. They are social movements which campaign around a symbolic or moral issue. The Hater finds other users with similar views to form a group. It shares views to bond itself. They destroy and attack their target. Haters seek to attract attention by making provocative comments that are aggressive or offensive. They are usually people that greatly dislike a specific person or thing. An example of an internet...

...I must cross the Horace Wilkinson Bridge. One day while crossing the Horace Wilkinson Bridge, I was trapped in 5 o’clock traffic; the bridge was jammed packed with vehicles that were jammed packed with people. I couldn’t help but wonder would this bridge possibly collapse from all the weight it was holding so I decided to turn on the radio to ease my mind. As if a strange act of fate, a song entitled Bridge Over Troubled Waters by Aretha Franklin came on and I took it as a sign to research bridge design and the differences of bridges. In our society, we no longer recognize the importance of bridges, so for my project I decided to stretch the stress of bridges by testing the strength of different variations of bridges. There are multiple reasons why I feel that our society doesn’t cherish bridges as much as we should, such as the fact that I have personally witnessed people littering on the bridge as if it as nothing important to modern society which is exactly the opposite of the truth of the matter. Bridges serve a great cause in our society and are modern marvels that I metaphorically refer to as the key to a modern Pangaea based on the way they are connecting our world, even if bridges are not connecting continents, and who knows, maybe that could be a possibility one day. Bridges are structures that serve the purpose of helping provide a way to maneuver over an obstacle, which can be anything from a stream to a river or a road. Bridges have been a key part of the world’s...

Bridge Truss

...simple bridge truss was the first structure I ever analyzed. The simple combination of beams that could hold cars, trains, and trucks over long spans of water fascinated me. Having the tools to analyze the loads on the truss further increased my interest in structures. I encountered the bridge in a textbook for my first engineering class. Knowing that the professor, Mr. John Doe, was a tough teacher, I asked him for the textbook so I could study and get ready for the class over the summer. Just arrived from Belize, I was determined to succeed. In class we learned about forces on simple members and then we put the members together to form a simple truss. At this point I had almost decided that structural engineering was the career for me. From there the class just took off: We went on to frames, distributed loads, considered friction; basically we were incorporating real world considerations into structural members. I loved the practical, problem solving aspects of the field. At UC my classes were even more advanced. In my analysis and design classes, I especially enjoyed studying steel design because we not only learned the use of the load resistance factor design but also applied that knowledge — I designed a four-story building. The professor was a practicing engineer, and he always related the subject to real life steel structures he had engineered, for example, the SB Medical Center, an all steel building with a base isolated campus. This is the kind of project on...

What a Beautiful Bridge

...Wharton1 David Wharton Dr. Northcutt ENG 1020-04 April 10, 2012 “What a Beautiful Bridge” In the writing of A Farewell to Arms, Ernest Hemingway employs symbolism in many forms. Hemingway uses water in various states throughout the progression of the novel such as the use of rain and rivers to symbolize life and love as well as death and danger. Hemingway uses symbols to allude to the events that will occur in the coming chapters of the novel if the reader is keen to heed them. Hemingway’s use of the “bridge” and the rivers they cross, represent the lives of people and the hazards people encounter when they approach and cross a bridge in an effort to reach what is waiting on the other side. The novel opens with a beautiful description of life and of living our lives. “In the late summer of that year we lived in a house in a village that looked across the river and the plain to the mountains. In the bed of the river there were pebbles and boulders, dry and white in the sun, and the water was clear and swiftly moving and blue in the channels”(3). Life’s river bottom is littered with small problems and with large problems. When things are going well, our lives are blue skies and sunshine and we are eager to have life pass rapidly. Hemingway is making a stand on the political atmosphere that was prevalent in America in the late 1920’s and one which can be applied in contemporary America as well. I must Wharton2 disagree with Thomas P. McDonnell, who wrote in an article for the...

Eng Science Application

...as the construction of engines, bridges, mines, ships and chemical plants. John Smeaton was the first self-proclaimed civil engineer ,and is often regarded as the father of civil engineering. He was English and helped establish the design for bridges, canals, harbours and lighthouses. Smeaton designed the third Eddystone lighthouse (1775-59) where he pioneered the use of ‘hydraulic lime’ (a form of mortar  which will set under water) He is important in the history, rediscovery of, and development of modern cement, because he identified the compositional requirements needed to obtain ‘hydraulicity’ in lime. The role and application of engineering science is important based on inventing and creating new ideas. It is from these roles in engineering science , we develop and enhance answers to our problems. we do this such that experiments are carried out and prove whether or not our predictions were made accurately or inaccurately. Engineering science has a huge role in the history of bridges. Engineering Science has matured bridges into being one of the best creations man has designed. Engineering Science allows engineers to make bridges towards their intention and determine variables which can produce better bridges. The role engineering science has is vital in any form of engineering The first bridges were from nature and can be as simple as a tree falling in a stream or river. Bridges of Chicago

...become an understatement to solely say “things have changed.” Among all these extravagant developments comes the marvel of the bridge. It's safe to say that even centuries ago, the early humans must have created bridges from the simple material they found surrounding them in their all natural environment. Whether it was a 3 by 10 foot log they had so carefully placed across the water way, or piles of smaller wood, closely intertwined and lined by the strongest of branches, the primal people had found a way to gather and hunt across streams and rivers. As the years and population had increased, so had the development and appearance of the bridge. Because of great urbanization and city growth, there was a high demand for a solution to travel in a quicker and more efficient way. One of the cities that rapidly boomed was Chicago, now the third most populous city in the United States. This growth mostly had to do with the rail road and the Chicago River. Because Chicago was fortunate enough to have a natural waterway entwined in the city, it was essential to begin the building of bridges throughout. As architects and engineers from all over gathered to create bridges both beautiful and useful, the city of Chicago continued to grow. Although used by millions of people each year, most Chicago natives and tourist fail to see the true importance of the bridges in this beautiful city. Overlooked is the importance of the...

...Task 6: Crash Testing Plan The final bridge railing systems should be tested according to the MASH TL-3 or TL-4. In TL-3 for example, two tests are recommended:  A 2425-lb vehicle impacting the critical impact point (CIP) of the length of need (LON) of the barrier at a nominal impact speed and angle of 62 mph and 25 degrees, respectively. This test investigates a barrier’s ability to successfully contain and redirect a small passenger vehicle.  A 5000-lb pickup truck impacting the CIP of the LON of the barrier at a nominal impact speed and angle of 62 mph and 25 degrees, respectively. This test investigates a barrier’s ability to successfully contain and redirect light trucks and sport utility vehicles. In TL-4, in addition to the two tests addressed above, another test should be done in order to investigate the barrier’s ability to successfully contain and redirect single unit trucks:  A 22000-lb single unit truck impacting the CIP of the LON of the barrier at a nominal impact speed and angle of 56 mph and 25 degrees, respectively.
