Manipulation through film techniques…
In the film ‘The Truman Show’, director Peter Weir shows many ways of manipulation through film techniques such as camera angles, background music and camera frames. He shows in the film how a viewer can be so mindlessly absorbed by others surrounding them on television. The director also shows how easily our minds can be involved and enwrapped in a storyline or plot, and how this can affect the way we see things and how our perspective on reality can change from this film manipulation.
Some of the films techniques that are used to draw in an audience or manipulate them are screen shots such as close ups, extreme close-ups, mid-shots, long shots and extreme long shots. Generally in TV shows such as ‘Big Brother’ or ‘American Idol’, close ups are used to show deep emotion. For example, in ‘The Truman Show’, Truman is given a close-up when reuniting with his Father after many years of separation. In this close-up Truman appears to be crying with happiness and loss, which in many cases would influence the way the audience feels, possibly making some cry of happiness or making them feel overwhelmed with emotion. Close-ups are just one of the few types of screen shots that draw in an audience and are a much-used technique in the film ‘The Truman Show’.
Another film technique commonly used in ‘The Truman Show’ is music. Music plays an important role in films to lighten, deepen or strengthen the mood of a scene. During ‘The Truman Show’, we see Christof often conducting the background music to Truman’s life, like it was a great piece of art and he was the creator. The director of ‘The Truman Show’ shows how the music in the background affects the viewers of ‘The Truman Show’ in the reunion scene when the viewers’ life’s stand still to see this moment, and the music makes the scene more meaningful and appealing to watch. It even shows people in Japan, from other nationalities being sucked in to Christof’s creation and film techniques. This film technique is also much used throughout the film.
Some other film techniques that director Peter Weir uses as an example of film manipulation are camera angles and movement. Camera movements like panning, zooming, tracking and tilting. An example of when he uses this technique in the film is when Meryl is riding a bike and Truman is watching her. As Meryl rides the bike, the camera pans towards her, as if the camera was following her. This technique makes the viewer feel as though they are also watching Meryl. Another example is when Truman is walking. Often in ‘The Truman Show’ this technique appears and the camera follows behind Truman as to follow him. This is designed to make the viewer feel as though they themself are following Truman. These manipulative film techniques are often displayed throughout the movie.
Another film technique used to manipulate the audience of ‘The Truman Show’ is the lighting. This technique includes high-key lighting and low-key lighting. The lighting in ‘The Truman Show’ is very important because of the day and night aspects of the movie. Often in ‘The Truman Show’, Christof seems to plan the big emotional dramas to be at night-time, to make a suggestion of deep emotion and to cover anything else in the background, making it more appealing to the audience. But for just ordinary day to day routines, Christof has the bright high-key lighting to make the scene more innocent and uncomplicated. Christof uses these techniques throughout the film to highlight different things and perspectives.
The director of ‘The Truman Show’ uses different film techniques through the film to highlight how an audience can be manipulated to feeling emotionally attached to a character. Screen shots such as close-ups and long shots are used to show the audience a deep emotion or a recognition of landscape. This manipulates how the audience is feeling by reaching out to them and possibly making feel the same sadness as the character or attachment. Music in the background are used in scenes to lighten or deepen the mood. This enhances and emphasizes the drama of a scene making the audience manipulated into feeling more engrossed or addicted. There is also an amount of camera angles and movement in the film, including panningand tracking. The perspective and movement of the camera makes us look at the character in different ways, for example if the camera was following an actor, we would be manipulated to feel as if we are doing the same. He shows how the film business works and what attracts us to our favourite television programs. Peter Weir gave all of the viewers of his movie a great insight to how manipulative and cunning show business can be and what to look out for in other television programs and movies.

...Manipulation and Control If people are manipulated and controlled, they will eventually become dissatisfied with their surroundings . I will be analyzing these themes in the Truman Show directed by Peter Weir, the song ‘Power and Control’ performed by Marina and the Diamonds, and my visual representation. The media is a powerful device that can be used to manipulate and control our thoughts and emotions, this is exposed in the Truman Show directed by Peter Weir. As it increasingly becomes clear to the titular character that his life is being filmed and broadcasted to the world, and as a result becomes unhappy with his world and is determined to escape. An example of manipulation is in the dock scene where Truman's best friend Marlon tries to rationalize Truman's feelings. Truman expresses his recent paranoia, knowing something isn't right. The camera cuts back and forth between close-up shots of Marlon and Truman, as he diverts...

...THE TRUMAN SHOW “We are the villains, victims, and hero of The Truman Show. And, ultimately, the only illusion we have to escape are the ones we create ourselves.” When you watch The Truman Show, a satirical social science fiction comedy-drama starring Jim Carrey as Truman Burbank, you’ll get to know how powerful media is, of how it affects individual ideology and of how are you going to relate it on the issues in our society. The movie was directed by Peter Weir and written by Andrew Niccol. It was all about a man who unknowingly lives his life as a reality show-star until he notices. that his environment is not what it seems to be . The cottage at 31 Natchez Street served as Truman home, from where he greets his neighbors with his famous line: “Good morning…and in case I don’t see you, good afternoon, good evening and good night!” The show's creator and executive producer Christof is able to capture Truman's real emotion and human behavior when put in certain situations. He was able to control every aspect of Truman’s life to prevent from discovering his false reality. Until there’s such time that Truman desperately want to leave Seahaven. He overcome his fear in water and sailed away in the town with a small boat. Christof, the creator of the show did everything just to make sure Truman would not leave the town by giving order to the show’s crew to create a large storm to capsize the boat but Truman overcomed it. As Truman recovers, he reaches the edge of the...

Truman

...response paper I will talk about the movie “Truman Show”. And some opinions and results which I got from it and the movies connection with popular culture First of all, I’ll start from the content of the movie. The main character is someone “who has been adopted by a company for the first time”, called Truman Burbank (Jim Carrey), who lives in a giant jar which can be seen from the space (the only building can be seen from space after the The Great Wall) unaware of the World. Truman , who thinks that his little world is “real”, eventually starts to figure out that everything happens around him just about a repetition and everything around him is just about a fiction. However , escaping from his fictional world is not easy as he estimates. Soon, Truman gets forced to face his fears, to go an “unknown” from the world that he is safe inside in order to escape from his “fake world”. In the last scene, director of the Truman Show (Ed Harris) tries to trick Truman (and “of course” the audience).Directors says “ there is nothing better at the “outside”, even inside is better and safe.”. But Truman doesn’t prefer the prison that he is in and escape from it. When I came to my conclusions about the movie is trying to send a message to the audience. For example, in the Truman afraid from sea because he lost her father at sea. Symbolic meanings in any language of the sea means freedom. Truman is afraid of the sea because it is not free. Truman does not exceed the sea following the exit...

Reality

...reality, but one must be realistic about how much of it one can actually control. I will focus especially on the lessons we can learn about this from the movie The Truman Show. At the outset, we need to distinguish between reality and imagination. Our brains have the remarkable ability not only to hold pictures of what has happened, but also to create pictures of what we think will happen, or could happen. This is our imagination. Without imagination, we would not be able to think sensibly about the future. Our imagination allows us to project ourselves into the future. But on the other hand, even though our imagination gives us a mental construction of the reality around us, it is not that actual reality itself. Let’s face it, there are thousands of things happening in the world around us that we do not know about and cannot imagine. Truman in The Truman Show has no idea what sort of machinations Christof is engineering to shape his life. All the people around Truman are acting. His so-called wife is an actress who is being paid to act as his wife. Truman, at first, cannot imagine this is true. He cannot imagine that Marlon is not ‘really’ his best friend, or that what Marlon says to him is actually being set up through an earpiece, with the words first being spoken by Christof in a TV studio. Eventually Truman becomes suspicious about what is going on around him. He has noticed that a studio light fell inexplicably from the sky. He has noticed that rain fell on just him...

Arguments In The Truman Show

...The Puppeteers of The Truman Show In The Truman Show, Truman, and to an extent the residents of Seahaven, are under the control of Christof and the viewers. Like the the prisoners in Plato’s “Allegory of the Cave,” Truman believes his reality is the true reality. Despite the actors and the illegitimacy of Seahaven, Truman does not know anything else, must like the prisoners only know the shadows on the wall. When Truman begins to realize the fraudulence of his world, he begins his journey to enlightenment. Like the prisoner, he exits the dome and sees the real world for the first time long after he has accepted the realities of his world. Adam and Truman

...Blast from the Past and The Truman Show both depict the story about men growing up in an artificial world. Since they are born, they live in a world that is created by others and they do not contact with the real world. However, both of the men in these two movies do not give up their dreams and they are determined. They are eager to get out of the present situation and they have a strong desire to live in the way they like. Finally, through their efforts, they shake off the shackles and both of them lead a free and happy life. Also, there is an interesting thing appears in both movies that the Christian image is mentioned. In Blast from the Past, each time Adam’s family ascent to the ground, the druggies who are religious acolytes are pious and reverent to them, thinking Adam’s family are Father and Son. In The Truman Show, after the vicious storm, Truman emerges from the water in a cruciform position which represents the Jesus after being tortured. Although the style of the two movies is similar, there are a lot of differences between them. First of all, Adam lives in a world full of love and what around him is the beautiful and positive aspect of life. Since he is born, his parents, who are the only person that he can contact with, tell him what the real world is. Moreover, his parents teach him dance, languages and sports. He learns from his parents to be modest, kind and a man of morality. Although his parents create an unreal world for Adam, they are not on...

...“The Carbonaro Effect” is a hidden camera television show where a magician, Michel Carbonaro, tricks unsuspecting, ordinary people. All of his performances occur in ordinary locations such as in stores, offices, or schools, and the people Carbonaro tricks are not aware that he is a magician. Carbonaro’s physics- and logic defying illusions produce hilarious reactions from his gullible targets. While Carbonaro’s illusions are certainly entertaining, I feel there is a damper on his magic since I am aware that I am only seeing illusions. However, much of the entertainment of the show comes from the incredulous reactions of subjects as they stand there wide eyed, and open mouthed, taking in the impossible scene they have just witnessed. The Impact Reality Tv Has on Our Youth

...The Impact Reality Television Has On Our Youth Television serves nearly 30 hours of entertainment to children 8 to 18, weekly. Reality television is a phenomenon that is sweeping the globe. These programs are widely viewed by kids, tweens, and teens. Many of these kids idolize reality stars and mimic their every move and their vocabulary. This alleged reality is negatively affecting the well-being of children world-wide. Kids tend to imitate what they observe on television and these programs typically support the worst attributes of behavior. (Ludwig 2003). While reality television can be positive, parents should monitor the programs watched by their children due to the negative affects these shows contribute to children’s overall health. It is a known fact that television influences our lives and the lives of our children. Today, kids are watching more reality television and revering those they see. They are basing their lives, their wants, their desires on what they perceive as real on these programs. This influence is shown in lower self-esteem, poor level of respect displayed, and the ideals of happiness our youths possess. Research presented by Dr. Helen Street revealed that children who suffer from depression will believe beauty, wealth, and popularity leads to fulfillment. (Genesis Health, 2003). The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) also shares concern that this exposure to reality media carries health risks to children. These risks include violent...

...The Truman show The Truman show is a reality TV show that has a main character called Truman, who has been dedicated to the show. He was shown when he was born and filmed his life until his thirties. Truman thinks that it is the real world but when he becomes older he realizes that there are a few weird things in seahaven. The Truman show uses symbolism, dialogue and music to convey ideas that reality television is not like real life and can ruin lives. There are various issues and themes explored such as, every humans search for truth/authenticity/freedom. Another few ideas and themes explored in the movie is, our dependence on media in our daily lives, also the way people/ the media abuse power over others. The last theme that I think connects with the film is, trust betrayed for personal gain. In the Truman show the most important theme that I have explored is the way people/ the media abuse power over others. This means media will try and take advantage of any thing that gains them money or fame. An example in the Truman show is during the last scene of the movie, when Truman is trying to leave seahaven. Christof tries to keep Truman in seahaven by over powering Truman. Christof does this so that he will keep on getting paid. This is symbolized when Christof speaks in a big and soft voice from the clouds symbolizing that he is bigger, better and in some way a god, when Christof says he is the creator of Truman. He also lies to Truman trying to trick him into staying...

The Truman Show

...The Truman Show There are many different films and genres, but there is one film that both provides a different outlook and is entertaining at the same time. The Truman Show is a movie that is about a man named Truman Burbank whose entire life was televised and set up since birth without his knowledge, which eventually realizes due to a series of events. This TV show was created by a man named Christof, who is in charge of Truman’s life, the actors around him and the enclosed city he built for Truman, called Seahaven. The Truman Show is a good film because of the psychological effect by the idea of the film, the difference between the real world and a perfect world, and the many religious connotations with it and allusions to God. One way this movie psychologically affects our perspective and helps us become a bit more aware because the movie shows Truman Burbank as a normal, regular person whose life was completely setup by a director. Similarly, humans were placed on this earth so perfectly, that everything feels normal with no sign of suspicion that could alter the vision of life. This movie also brings a sense of paranoia, by feeling watched at all times and to confuse the people in one’s life as actors, just like in the movie. Of course, those are just the temporary effects of watching such a movie, as with any other movie that alters the thought process. It seems as if the creator of the show, Christof, really wanted to prove that the world he created is safe and considered...

Truman Essay

...The Truman Show Essay “We accept the reality of the world with which we’re presented.” That is what Christof answers, when somebody asks why Truman never has come close to discovering the true nature of his world. Truman Burbank lives a perfect life in the beautiful and secure town of Seahaven. He has a beautiful wife, good friends and family and is a successful man. But what he doesn’t know is that this world he lives in is a set-up. The life he thinks is usual is actually a studio - a big dome with hidden cameras in every corner. He was presented to this “unreal” world, when he was a child, and was born into this TV-shown. That is of course the world he thinks, is the real world. Why should he believe anything else? Truman grew up in that world, without knowing that every step he took was being viewed by the whole world. All his friends and family plays a role in the most viewed TV-show in the whole world, The Truman Show. Truman accepts his existence in Seahaven. He doesn’t think that anything is odd, because he hasn’t experienced anything else. Truman does not question his wife’s or friend’s unusual behavior, because it is not unusual for him. He doesn't wonder why everything happens at the same time every day, there hasn’t happened anything else. Each person’s reality is their perspective. He accepts the world, he lives in. Christof, the producer and creator of the show, has followed Truman since the beginning. He almost feels like a father to him, but that is also...
