The city I chose to do my project over is a city that I know fairly well, Tulsa Oklahoma. I chose to do Tulsa because I wanted to learn more about the history about the area that I grew up next to. Tulsa is the second-largest city in the State of Oklahoma and 47th-largest city in the United States. As of the US Census 2010 the population was 398,121. (US Census 2010) The earliest known Oklahoma settlers date all the way back to the Ozark Bluff Dwellers. The Five Civilized Tribes; Cherokees, Choctaws, Chickasaws, Creeks and Seminoles, all came to the area in the year 1836 thanks to the infamous Trail of Tears. For the majority of 20th century, the city held the nickname "Oil Capital of the World" and played a huge role as one of the most important places for the American oil industry. (Tulsa info 2015) Tulsa is surrounded by smaller towns such as Sand Springs, Sapulpa, Owasso, and Broken Arrow. I found out that Tulsa is actually younger than these cities. For example, Broken Arrow was considered a town in 1904 so it is actually three years older than Tulsa. The first contract for paving was awarded in 1906. Since asphalt wasn’t invented yet, they had to do the streets out of brick. The bricklaying did not begin until October of that year and happened slowly because local demand for bricks far exceeded the amount of nearby brick plants. Later, streets were paved with concrete or asphalt. (TulsaGal 2010) It has been said that you can't get out of Tulsa without having to enter onto a turnpike and well that is mostly true. You have to use the highways to go to other town like Broken Arrow and Owasso. I personally know these highways all too well. I was born in Broken Arrow and used the highway quite frequently.
