Humor in Television Sitcoms

While watching television sitcoms there are lots of humor in various parts of the episodes. The humor can all relate to communication class in different ways. These include verbal and nonverbal messages, facial expressions, listening skills, diversity with communication and abstract and specific language. Humor in The Office is presented by the use of language, nonverbal communication and listening. These factors that create humor are the main reasons why the show is so popular.
Listening skills are very important along with the others that were stated. It makes up forty-five percent of one’s communication time. Listening is a complex process of receiving, constructing meaning from, and responding to verbal and nonverbal messages (Beebe, 115). There are five activities that factor into listening and they include selecting, attending, understanding, remembering and responding (Beebe, 115-7). Conquering these five activities is important to becoming an effective listener for your friends and others. Also, being a good listener means you have to stop all competing messages in your head, step away from your own thoughts and try to experience the thoughts of others and look and listen with your eyes. Lastly six strategies to improve one’s listening skills are, identify the listening goal, mentally summarize details, link details to major ideas, practice with difficult material, transform listening barriers into goals and listen actively (Beebe, 129-30). This is only one important factor of communication in which humor as an impact on.
There are many types of diversity in humor sitcoms and in humor in general. A lot of people think making jokes about diversity is hilarious but sometimes it is not the case. Culture is the learned system of knowledge, behavior, attitudes, beliefs, values and norms shared by a group. There are obvious differences in verbal and nonverbal messages especially when it comes to humor (Beebe, 9). Not all people adapt in the same way to statements made or jokes that are said. Different languages have different meanings for a lot of sayings (Beebe, 9). People just need to be understanding of their surroundings and realize what they are about to say before they say it, because one never knows when that we affect someone’s feelings in a negative way. Diversity can be a problem when it comes to humor in sitcoms because most of the humor is made based off of diversity situations.
The types of language a person uses especially in humor can be powerful. There are two ways a person can use language such as using abstract rather than specific language. Words affect emotions, actions and thoughts of another person (Beebe, 62). Abstract language is meaning resulting from inability to experience a referent with one of senses and specific or concrete language is related to being able to experience a referent with one of our senses (Beebe, 63). Language has the power to create and label experiences, impact thoughts and actions, shape and reflect culture and can make or break relationships with another person or people (Beebe, 66-8). Yes, language can be used for humor in a variety of ways especially in sitcoms like The Office but sometimes one has to be careful of what they are saying because like stated before it can be a powerful message to another person and can affect many things with a person inside and out. Sometimes abstract language is better to use in some situations but sometimes concrete/specific language can be better as well, one just has to pick the right time to use both types of languages.
In the article, written by Sam Lunt, “NBC’s The Office has Jumped the Shark.” Talks about how this hilarious sitcom has made it past the crucial part of being a television show. The term, jump the shark means that a show that has been past its prime needs to get over the hump to see be a good show and The Office has done that just recently. They actually had to change the humor in The Office while they were trying to “jump the shark”. “The Office has, unfortunately, seen a dramatic shift in the style of everything from the office where the action takes place to the actors’ wardrobe to the humor to the plots of episodes” (Lunt, 1). Before the change is humor the first part of The Office, the humor was understated and wry (Lunt, 1). Although the show has made it over the shark and has continued to be watched by its viewers there is a question about the humor being used in the show. “Each of the characters had their own identity, quirks, and personalities. Now, the episodes feel like any other sitcom” (Lunt, 1). So even over time a show can lose its humor but still be able to last in the show biz. The changing of the humor in this show changes all of the types of messages, listening, and other uses of language that are being used. The writer now has to change everything to cope with the change in humor. So over the time that the show has lasted from season one until season seven, there have been multiple changes in the uses of language to show humor but they are still doing well with the changes.

...Movin’ On Up: Have Black Sitcoms Really Changed the Black Community for the Better? Through time, blacks in television have been able to abolish many of the pervious stereotypes from past generations. However as media progresses and blacks are becoming a more predominate part of American television, the effect of black sitcoms is being called into question when it comes to their effect on the black community. The early 70’s through the 90’s were the golden age for black sitcoms, both the good and the bad. Blacks were still portrayed as both ignorant, poor, mammy and uncle type characters in shows such as Good Times, Stanford and Son, and more recently, Tyler Perry’s house of Payne. However, many shows promoted the educated, independent, affluent black family such as The Cosby Show, The Jefferson’s, and A Different World. Do these shows truly have an effect on the black community, and even more importantly do they effect how the rest of America views them? Nick at Night

...better advantage of valuable satellite time, MTV Networks President Bob Pittman asked Nickelodeon general manager Geraldine Laybourne to develop programming to fill the time period that would be vacated (once A&E became a separate channel in January 1985, Nickelodeon simply displayed a test pattern screen after the network signed off). After futile attempts at original program development, Laybourne asked programming and branding consultants Alan Goodman and Fred Seibert of Fred/Alan Inc. (successful as the original branders of MTV, and for Nickelodeon's extensive 1984 rebranding) to come up with programming ideas. After being presented with over 200 episodes of The Donna Reed Show (a 1950s sitcom which Laybourne despised), Goodman and Seibert conceived the idea of the "first oldies TV network." They modeled the new evening and overnight programming block on the successful oldies radio format, "The Greatest Hits of All Time," and branded the block with their next evolution of MTV- and Nickelodeon-style imagery and bumpers. Head programmer Debby Beece led the team to the name "Nick at Nite" for the new block; a logo originally conceived for the block was based on Nickelodeon's "pinball" logo introduced in 1981, which was discontinued with that network's rebrand. Fred/Alan developed the original logo with Tom Corey and Scott Nash of Boston advertising firm Corey McPherson Nash, creators of the well-recognized Nickelodeon orange logo (Nick at Nite's logo design would maintain a...

Cosby Show

...Cosby Show is because it gave me hope. Growing up in the projects was not a joyful experience, although my parents did a great job with what they had. The Cosby Show depicted family in a very positive way. It provided an alternative to the stereotypical African American family. Unlike other black sitcoms such as “Good Times”, which always left you depressed after watching the show, “ The Jeffersons'', whose nanny was very loud and opinionated. The Huxtables were upper class people. Cliff Huxtable( Bill Cosby) was a doctor and his wife Claire( Phylicia Rashad) was a successful lawyer. The family structure was that of a nuclear unit or modern family. The gender roles of the parents were that of egalitarian. They were a two parent home with 5 children. They both balanced the responsibilities of supporting their children through work and quality time. The gender of the children were 4m girls and 1 boy. This particular sitcom went against the stereotypical gender roles for African Americans, especially the male. I'm sure this influenced a lot of issues. The gender roles of the children were displayed as your typical youth. If I were to read a book called “The Cosby Show” versus watching the sitcom, the nationality of the family would be unknown. Critics considered this...

Oprah

...Oprah Winfrey is one of the most influential African American women in U.S. history. When she was young, Winfrey was separated from her parent and had to live in a poor surrounding with her grandparent. Having to live with many hardships, Oprah Winfrey was able to turn her life over and achieve many outstanding achievements. According to Adler’s theory in birth order, “only child will tend not to lose primacy and power, besides, he or she will mature at an early stage of life and may have certain issues where they are not in centre of attention.” Based on Adler’s theory in birth order, I believe that Oprah Winfrey did not lose faith after all the hardships she had been through. Consequently, this had brought great results in her future life. At a young age, many difficulties were brought upon Oprah Winfrey. At the age of six, Winfrey had to live in a poor surrounding with her grandmother: “her parents were separated from each other and she had been put to a very poor environment with her grandparents when she was six.” But when her grandmother had gotten ill, she had to move to Wisconsin to live with her mother. Thereafter, Winfrey had endured many hardships in which include having to be sexually abused by her male relatives. After Oprah Winfrey finished third grade, she moved out to live with her father and stepmother in Nashville Tennessee. Due to the fact that her father and stepmother were unable to have a child also being that Oprah was the only child, they treated her...

Tesla

...Strategic Perspective and Ethics Key Issue The key issue involving Tesla Motors is the organizations approach to marketing their product and social mission. The fundamental idea behind the company’s existence is to create vehicles that require sustainable energy as oppose to fossil fuel dependency. The demand for their products is built on the zoom out, bigger picture idea that consumers will eventually switch from the current fossil fuel powered cars to alternative energy powered cars in the future (Kanter, 114). The founder and current Chief Executive Officer, Elon Musk, created this organization based on his long term vision that the future of automobiles requires a less oil dependent vehicle. Tesla Motors has consistently reported losses since implementation but the growth and popularity of the organization is based on the future potential and not present success. Shareholders and those involved will eventually want to see real results for them to continue to support Musks bigger picture (Kanter, 114). By non-GAAP standards the company has reported an expectation to create positive earnings and cash flow by early 2016 but previously the company has failed to meet short term expectations (https://hbr.org/2015/05/teslas-not-as-disruptive-as-you-might-think). The lack of profit stems from a combination of dismal efforts to reach more consumers and generate awareness, the costs associated to purchase a vehicle and Teslas approach to marketing and generating sales. ...analysis of acquisition prospects. She had pressed for such participation and now she had to deliver. Because of prior work on frozen fruit juices, Joyce had some knowledge of the gourmet frozen market. It was pioneered by Stouffer, who introduced the Lean Cuisine line of entrees in 1981. Since then, other firms have entered the industry with complete gourmet dinners (including Swanson’s Le Menu and Armour’s Dinner Classics). The distinction between entrees, dinners, and the three main types of food offered— conventional, ethnic (i.e., Benihana Restaurant Classics), or low-calorie (i.e., Weight Watchers or Light & Elegant)—define relevant submarkets. Joyce hypothesized that the gourmet frozen food buyer differs from the buyer of conventional “TV dinners” in several respects. The gourmet frozen food buyers are generally young, upper-socioeconomic-group people who probably have microwaves, are more health conscious, and are likely to be working women and others who want sophisticated cuisine but lack the time to prepare it.
