Media Violence: Television shows are part of the American culture. Unlike early times when a TV could only be afforded by the upper class and were seldomly tuned into, Americans today use TV as a main source of entertainment. The age group of people who watch TV encompasses all ends of the spectrum. TV programming exists for just about any age and genre. Television can be a powerful influence in developing a person’s value system and shaping their behavior. Unfortunately, much of today’s television programming is violent. The reliance on violence as an entertainment stimulant cheapens children’s views of human interaction, leads to aggressive behavior and fosters the acceptance of violence in our society. A young child who watches violent shows is unable to differentiate between fact and fiction. As a result they are inclined to imitate the acts they witness on TV and view them as acceptable means of behavior. Violence is a prevalent theme seen on children’s TV shows and this exposure starts at an early age. As former FCC commissioner Nicholas Johnson said in 1971, “All television is educational television. The only question is, what is it teaching?” (Johnson) If children are being exposed daily settings of TV at the age of one and what’s being depicted is violent then that child is beginning to understand the nature of violence at an early age. At such an early age, toddlers are not able to distinguish what’s made for entertainment and what applies to reality. Children can be described as sponges, constantly absorbing and making sense of new information and the world around them. Violence is not something that a child needs to be concerned with. Brand S. Centerwall described this exposure to violent behavior by stating, “Infants have an instinctive desire to imitate observed human

Tv Violence

...Media Violence Essay The violence and content that the media of the United States displays to children causes hidden irreversible damage that most deny. What it would take to minimize the spread of school shootings is simple and the results would surprise the American society. The content of movies, music, and other forms of entertainment have a serious effect on children specifically because media inadvertently trains their minds for violence and needs to be stopped. History shows that some of the first violent acts were noticed in the 1950’s. They say that even back then, a lot of television was filled with destructive acts. From talking to my grandparents, television was not as much of a necessity as we believe it to be today. Being the society that has to be entertained around the clock, we just do not think about what is going into our children’s minds from what they watch or see on TV. It seems to affect children more, because their behavior patterns are still developing. They are very vulnerable, and we don’t want them to develop into what they see on TV. Children who watch television a lot of the time become less sensitive to the pain and suffering of other people around them. If they are always in front of the television and soak in all of that negativity they are seeing, they become not as aware as they should be. In addition to this, they form an opinion that this behavior is normal and accepted. When terrible acts of violence happen in a child’s life that...

“Tv Violence”

...PAPER OUTLINE “TV Violence” I. Introduction II. Body 1 According to American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Many people believe that television violence has a negative effect on society because it promotes violence. This statement is true. Children in America watch about four hours of television a day. Television can be a major influence in behavioral growth and forming values. Sadly, more than 60 percent of television programs contain violence. Studies show that both children and teens are affected by this in a negative way. III. Body 2 According to New York Times When a child or teen watches a violent program they become more aggressive. Seeing repetitive violence without a consequence lets children think they too can get away with violent acts. Less that 5 percent of violent programs show a consequence of using violence. A 9-year-old boy surrendered after the robbery of a midtown Manhattan bank. His lawyer claimed his crime was influenced by crime programs on television and that he was only playing when he pointed a toy gun at a teller at the bank and demanded money. IV. Body 3 According to turn off your TV by Ron Kaufman “What a child learns about violence, a child learns for life,” says ACT Against Violence. When a toddler watches television they don’t know the difference between fantasy and reality. This causes the toddler to think what he or she is watching is okay and happens all the time. As children get older from ages 6 to 11 their views on...

Agression/Tv Violence

...Shumryia Neal Social Psychology Agression/TV Violence Prof. Zaleski 6/26/14 Television has its good side. It can be entertaining and educational, and can open up new worlds for kids, giving them a chance to travel the globe, learn about different cultures, and gain exposure to ideas that may never encounter in their own community. Shows with a prosocial message can have a positive effect on kids’ behavior; programs with positive role models can influence viewers to make positive lifestyle changes. However, the reverse can also be true: kids are likely to learn things from TV that parents don’t want them to learn. TV can affect kids’ health, behavior and family life in negative ways. The Amount of Violence on Television According to the renowned psychiatrist Karl Menninger, "We not only tolerate violence it is part of our life. Why over one third of our television programs use it for amusement. There are more than 200 million television sets in America. The average American watches over seven hours a day. For many children, this is more time than they spend in school. The world of television has been alternatively called entertainment and a vast wasteland. It serves as a model of the world around us.       What kind of world does it depict? The message is often one of violence. In 1973, the Annenberg School of Communications at the University of Pennsylvania, devised a "violence profile" to measure the amount of violence shown on television. The analysts watched over...

Is the violence they witnessed on television and in video games last night responsible for their aggressive behavior today? Violence, drugs, and murders are common words heard daily in our rugged environment. Our society today has become increasingly violent with children exhibiting more aggressive behaviors. As if that alone is not scary enough, the age of the offender is becoming younger and younger. What influences children to commit violent criminal acts? Tv Violence and the Future of Our Children

...TV Violence and the Future of Our Children In recent years, the news has seemed to mimic violence that appears in television and in movies. Several incidents support the majority of people's assumption that TV violence effects a child's behavior in many ways. A child's judgment is hurt badly by viewing TV violence, which can have some serious long-term effects. First of all, when children see characters on TV or in movies triumph by using physical force, they begin to see violence as an acceptable way of resolving conflicts. As a result, children use physical or verbal abuse toward others on the playground or at school. Some parents often worry that their children will not fit in with their friends if they do not watch popular children's television programs. The same 20-year research tell us that children who watch more violent television are actually rated more poorly by their peers. Also, according to Dr. Jeanne Beckman, children who spend more time watching violent TV programming are rated more poorly by their teachers, their peers, have few problem-solving skills, and are more likely to get into trouble with the law as teenagers and young adults. Take for instance the young boy who opened fire at his school in Pearl, Mississippi. The movie the Basketball Diaries had the most effect on this boy. Children who view too much media violence may have more difficulty getting along with others. If children do not see acts of kindness between other children and adults, they...

Oprah

...Oprah Winfrey is one of the most influential African American women in U.S. history. When she was young, Winfrey was separated from her parent and had to live in a poor surrounding with her grandparent. Having to live with many hardships, Oprah Winfrey was able to turn her life over and achieve many outstanding achievements. According to Adler’s theory in birth order, “only child will tend not to lose primacy and power, besides, he or she will mature at an early stage of life and may have certain issues where they are not in centre of attention.” Based on Adler’s theory in birth order, I believe that Oprah Winfrey did not lose faith after all the hardships she had been through. Consequently, this had brought great results in her future life. At a young age, many difficulties were brought upon Oprah Winfrey. At the age of six, Winfrey had to live in a poor surrounding with her grandmother: “her parents were separated from each other and she had been put to a very poor environment with her grandparents when she was six.” But when her grandmother had gotten ill, she had to move to Wisconsin to live with her mother. Thereafter, Winfrey had endured many hardships in which include having to be sexually abused by her male relatives. After Oprah Winfrey finished third grade, she moved out to live with her father and stepmother in Nashville Tennessee. Due to the fact that her father and stepmother were unable to have a child also being that Oprah was the only child, they treated her...
