An over indulgence in carbohydrates leads to weight gain and other potentially serious medical conditions such as type 2 diabetes. This type occurs when the body resists its own insulin production to control blood sugar levels. Known as an “old person’s disease”, Type 2 diabetes symptoms do not generally arise until at least middle age; however, there has been a dramatic increase in the number of children and adolescents becoming diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in recent years. Multiple risk factors exist for type 2 diabetes including family history, sedentary lifestyle, and diet (especially when diet leads to obesity). School lunches, often high in carbohydrates, are a key factor in contributing to the increase in childhood type 2 diabetes,

...Diabetes Type 2: Diabetes is a disease, which causes your blood sugar levels to be higher than normal. This can also be called hyperglycemia. Type 2 diabetes is when your body doesn’t produce enough insulin to keep up with the blood sugar levels or your body isn’t responsive to insulin. This is called insulin resistant. Insulin is a hormone produced in the pancreas after you eat to bring blood sugar levels down to normal through converting the extra glucose into glycogen in the liver and muscle cells. What happens after you eat sugary food? As blood sugars rise, the pancreas produces the hormone insulin. The blood with the insulin and glucose travel to the liver, where the insulin stimulates the liver to produce enzymes such as glycogen...

Insulin is a hormone that gets glucose into body cells after glucose is extracted from food molecules. In type 1 diabetes, insulin is not produced or produced in a very little amount, and cannot respond to all insulinogenic stimuli. In type 2 diabetes, insulin is not made well or used well by the body. A third type of diabetes is existent in which there are defects with beta cells or insulin. ...Diabetes is a devastating disease that causes chronic problems globally. Diabetes comes in different forms; type 1 diabetes is caused from the pancreas inability to produce insulin. Insulin is a hormone that acts as a key that opens the cell to allow sugar inside to process into energy. Type 2 diabetes is caused from an insulin resistance, the cell becomes misshapen from an increase in adipose tissue that will not allow the key insulin to open the cell and allow glucose inside. This causes the glucose to be trapped in the blood stream. The blood of humans is thin like water, but as the glucose builds up in the blood stream it becomes thicker making it harder to transport through the various body systems. ...Diabetes A curse becomes a blessing when Tom Thompkins was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. Usually, many people with diabetes find the condition to be upsetting and life changing. When people are diagnosed they like to know the kind they have, treatments, and relatable stories of others with diabetes. First, according to Diabetes Forecast, “Type 1 diabetes occurs when the body’s immune system attacks insulin producing beta cells” (#). Beta cells make insulin and are found in the pancreas. Damage to the beta cells from Type 1 throws off the process. People with Type 1 keep their blood glucose levels in a healthy range by giving themselves multiple injections of insulin each day, following a meal plan, exercising regularly, and monitoring their glucose levels. Medical nutrition therapy performed by a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) plays an important role in helping patients understand their risk factors and incorporate lifestyle changes in which they can adapt to lead healthier lives. Early diagnosis of prediabetes and treatment of type 2 diabetes using medical nutrition therapy, physical activity, and medication may help reduce the mortality rates and the economic burden of diabetes. The Research Process

...The Research Process HCS/465 November 2, 2012 The Research Process In the research process, many questions must be answered to provide validity in the article being read. Evaluating quantitative research and qualitative research is the beginning of the process. Supporting evidence is a way to validate the creditability of the content read. Three types of literature typically reviewed are theoretical literature, empirical literature, and the use of primary and secondary sources. The hypothesis must be stated in the article and must be categorized as null, directional, or research based. The hypothesis statement must contain variables. Variables in the content of research can be defined as confounding variables, environmental variables, and demographic variables. Sampling is also used to collect data for research. With the above taken into consideration, this paper will evaluate a journal article based on diabetes and reproductive health in women. Improving Compliance in Dm Patients

... 13 References 15 Appendix: Table 18 Improving Compliance to Treatment Plan in DM Patients INTRODUCTION The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) (2011) identified diabetes mellitus (DM) as a major public health disorder in the United States that results in one’s shortage of insulin or one’s inability to utilize insulin. As the insulin hormone is necessary for the conversion of glucose to energy in somatic cells, ineffective insulin activity in DM causes increased glucose residues in the blood, which tends to harm organs (CDC, 2011). The CDC (2011) has identified three primary types of DM: (a) Type 1 DM results from an inability to generate insulin in the body due to...

Epidermiology

...Epidemiology Paper According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Center for Health Statistics, "[By 1993] death certificates listed diabetes as the fifth leading cause of death for Blacks aged 45 to 64, and the third leading cause of death for those aged 65 and older in 1990” (Bailey, 2007, p. 1). These statistics show how serious the problem of diabetes has become in the black community. Epidemiological studies can focus the efforts of the healthcare community to effective interventions aimed at lowering the prevalence and incidence of diabetes among African Americans. Epidemiology Paper Roles This paper will explore the role of epidemiology in the surveillance of the incidence of diabetes in the morbidity and mortality of Americans of African descent. This paper will also discuss the definition and purpose of epidemiology, epidemiological methods, the epidemiological triangle and levels of prevention that is related with diabetes in the African American community. Definition and purpose of epidemiology in epidemiology paper The definition of epidemiology is very important if one is to use the definition to describe its purpose. “A common definition of epidemiology is the study of the distribution and determinants of disease frequency in human populations” (Savitz, Poole, & Miller, 1999, p. 1159). A better description of epidemiology is the analysis of the incidence and spread of disease within populations, with the aim of establishing...

Diabetes

...Diabetes: the most common disease that runs in my family A Research Paper Presented In partial Fulfillment of the Course PE 211 04 Health Principles To Professor Earl Henry December 4, 2013 Health Principles December 4, 2013 Abstract Diabetes is a disease that runs on my mother’s side of the family. This paper will pull out the different types of diabetes, type 1 and type 2. Each type has different symptoms that will show the requirements of receiving diabetes. Diabetes can be treated but it can’t be necessarily be curable. It is important that to motivate people to start taking care of their body’s. Young children around the world, especially in America start getting treatments for being diabetic. It is devastating to see young children suffer at young ages because of the foods they eat and not getting plenty of exercises. Having a good health is very important and for young children there should not be any excuses. The reason why I picked this topic is because my mother’s side of my family are diabetics and it is very common to them. My grandmother has to take medications everyday for her diabetes. My family has the decency to take care of their body’s, but it’s a disease that runs in our family. There is a great chance for me in the future to catch this disease if I do not pay attention to my own health. Everett Grant Professor Henry Health Principles December 4, 2013 Diabetes There are many risk factors for type 2 diabetes, it goes through family history...
