1. AT Form Factor * The AT form factor is the oldest and the biggest form factor. It was popular until the Baby AT was released. * IBM 1984 * Also known as Full AT, it was popular during the era of the Intel 80386 microprocessor.

2. BABY AT * It is still being used today, usually in Pentium class products. * IBM 1985 * The reason that prompted the Baby AT was the width of the AT (12") and the fact that the board was difficult to install, service, and upgrade. * It became popular due to its significantly smaller size.

3. ATX * Intel 1996 * ATX was developed as an evolution of the Baby AT form factor and was defined to address four areas of improvement: enhanced ease of use, better support for current and future I/O, better support for current and future processor technology, and reduced total system cost. * It is the most popular form factor for commodity motherboards. Typical size is 9.6 × 12 in although some companies extend that to 10 × 12 in.
Conclusion:

4. Mini-ATX
This form factor is basically the same as ATX with a smaller allowable board size. * Mini-ATX = 11.2" x 8.2" * AOpen 2005 * Mini-ATX motherboards were designed with MoDT (Mobile on Desktop Technology) which adapt mobile CPUs for lower power requirements and less heat generation, which may be beneficial for home theater PCs (HTPC), in-car PCs, or industrial use.

Conclusion:

5. HPTX * EVGA 2008 * A large design by EVGA currently featured on two motherboards; the eVGA SR2 and SRX. Intended for use with multiple CPUs. Cases require 9 expansion slots to contain this form-factor.

These motherboards replace the older at form and it is also smaller, it has better organization and more variety of I/O devices. The ATX motherboard supports the P1 power supply witch can be the 20 pin or the 24 pin type, it has PS/2 and USB slots and both AGP and PCI memory slots. It also has 2 IDE connectors and at least 4 SATA slots. It has a soft power button on the front of the case that you can configure so when you press that power button is going to allow the computer to shut down normally and let the operating system reboot normally, and on the back there is a power switch that when press this is going to cut all the power of the motherboard. This motherboard has better air flow and intake front vent, a back exhaust vent and a parallel air flow to the CPU. The second motherboard that is show in this video is the NLX motherboard The NLX motherboard also known as the daughter board has BUSES on the back of the motherboard. Most of the time these BUSES are made of cooper and their jobs is to connect the components and alow delivery of power and data. The System BUS connects the mother board to the CPU. It supports a P1 power supply the 20 pin type or the 24 pin type. This motherboard can support the 40 pin IDE connector, a 34 pin floppy drive, SATA connectors and 50 or 68...

...INTRODUCTION Computers continue to become more a part of everyday life. According to the census conducted in 2013, 86% of households in the U.S. had at least one computer, and it is likely that number has gone up in the last two years. Many families have more than one computer in the household. The cost of a computer can range from a couple hundred dollars to a couple thousand depending on the criteria the customer gives for the specifications of the computer. In computers there are three main options, first of which is to buy a branded computer, such as apple. The second option is to have a custom computer build by a company, such as ibuypower.com. The third option is to build your own computer with your own specifications. As far as cost goes, usually buying a branded computer is the cheapest option, and building a computer is slightly less costly than having a custom computer built. If a consumer is not saving money building their own computer, then why would you go through the hassle? There are many advantages to building you own computer, first amongst them is the consumer gets exactly what they want. Building your own computer allows flexibility that isn’t there otherwise. The consumer can adjust the parts to fit a specific budget and can build the computer with a specific goal in mind, such as a high-end gaming computer, or a family multimedia computer. When buying from a company, you get exactly what they make, there are not many variations or customizations in...

Motherboard

...Motherboard, Short answer, 5/14/15, Ikhlas Abdulsaid, Daniel Witzel The motherboard represents the logical foundation of the computer. In other words, everything that makes a computer a computer must be attached to the motherboard. From the CPU to storage devices, from RAM to printer ports, the motherboard provides the connections that help them work together. The motherboard is essential to computer operation in large part because of the two major buses it contains: the system bus and the I/O bus. Together, these buses carry all the information between the different parts of the computer. The location and orientation of these buses varies depending on the type of form factor used. The form factor is the design of the motherboard, which the case and power supply must comply with. Motherboards can come with integrated I/O ports; these are usually found as a rear port cluster. The motherboard also has memory slots, which enable a user to add sticks of RAM, thus increasing the computer’s total resources. Of course, the motherboard also has expansion slots most commonly used by audio and video cards, although the slots can be uti- lized by many other types of cards as well. You also find mass storage ports for hard drives, CD-ROMs, and DVD-ROMs on the motherboard. Upgrading only the motherboard will improve the performance of the computer system limitedly because if you motherboard is pumping info at 100mph and your CPU and busses only max out at 50 mph, you will need to upgrade...

Exploring Motherboard and Busses

...Farhana Haque NT1110 4/21/15 Exploring the Motherboard and Busses The motherboard represents the logical foundation of the computer. Everything that makes a computer must be attached to the motherboard. The major components of a motherboard include I/O port cluster, memory slots and expansion slots, and mass storage interfaces. All of these components work together to make the computer run as efficiently as possible. The integrated I/O port cluster can be located in as many as three different places. All motherboards feature a rear port cluster, and many motherboards also have additional ports on the top of the motherboard that are routed to header cables accessible from the front and rear of the system. The most recent motherboard include serial (COM), parallel (LPT), PS/2 mouse, PS/2 keyboard, USB 2.0, Ethernet, audio, FireWire, VGA, and HDMI ports. Integrated ports provide efficiency when it comes to performance and installment, but may provide problems when it comes to repair. Modern motherboards include two or more memory slots. Memory slots vary in design according to the type of memory the system supports. Each memory slot includes locking levers that secure memory in place. Motherboards use expansion slots to provide support for additional I/O devices and high-speed video/graphics cards. The most common expansion slots on recent systems include PCI, AGP, and PCIe. Some systems also feature AMR or CNR slots for specific purposes. Mass storage interfaces include...

...in the motherboard of a computer. Chipsets are usually designed to work with a specific family of microprocessors. Because it controls communications between the processor and external devices, the chipset plays a crucial role in determining system performance. The chipset normally consists of two major microchips. These are known as the North bridge and the South Bridge. Developments in chip technologies have meant that chipset and CPU manufacturers are changing the way the chipset layout works, for example some CPU's come with a built in memory controller taking that job from the North Bridge, some chipsets have incorporated the north and south bridge in the same chip. The North Bridge Handles data for the graphics port whether that be AGP or PCI express and the main memory which includes the FSB (Front side bus). Although both chips are required for the PC to work the North Bridge handles most of the very important tasks such as the connection between the CPU and main memory bank. The South Bridge handles data from the PCI x1 slots and can also have integrated components such as Audio and/or onboard graphics. The North and South bridges will have different chip names even though they are very often paired with the same opposite bridge to come under the collective name of the chipset. Below is a diagram of the KT600 chipset from VIA technologies. This diagram shows how the components of your PC are connected to the chipset. Motherboard Bus The motherboard bus is...

Nt1110 Unit 4 Assignment Video Summary

...Assignment Video 04/14/14 Motherboards come in several form-factors. When building a system, it is important to know what it will be used for before purchasing. Two of the most important parts need to be considered before the system is built – the CPU and the motherboard. There are several different types of CPUs and motherboards, so care should be taken that the CPU can be seated on the motherboard. Also, think about what the computer will be used for. General users will not need a top of the line system for browsing the web, email, social networking and word processing types applications, so a “bare-bones” type of computer may be a better selection. Systems used for gaming, video editing or high end graphics will need to have other considerations such as a higher end graphics card, more RAM and better than average cooling. Video 1.04: Motherboards: Most important considerations: Motherboard CPU Form Factor: ATX form factor motherboards Replaced the older AT form factor. ...mixed and matched in millions of different configurations. This allows people to customize their PC to meet their exact needs. In this paper we will discuss and identify the major components that make a computer function. The motherboard is the spine of the computer. The motherboard is sometimes alternatively known as the main board, system board, or, on Apple computers, the logic board. It connects all the other components of a PC together. The motherboard holds the CPU, RAM modules and most of the circuitry (What are the Computer Parts?, 2008). Adapter cards also plug into your motherboard. There are two major types of motherboards: integrated and nonintegrated. On a nonintegrated system board each major assembly is installed in the computer as an expansion card (Doctor, Dulaney, & Skandier, 2007). This includes video cards, disk controllers, and other accessories. On an integrated system board most of the components are integrated into the motherboard circuitry. Most motherboards now a day are integrated. These boards were designed for simplicity. You don’t have to worry about installing extra components. The downside to integrated motherboards is if something breaks, you have to replace the whole motherboard. With nonintegrated motherboards, when something breaks, you just have to replace that part. How to Build a Barebones Pc

...printer, etc. Software is a program or set of instructions or rules that control the operation of a computer. The most obvious hardware component is the computer case. The case is where size comes into play. A bigger case allows more room for components. A bigger case is most often used for servers. For basic home computing needs, a small or mid-sized case is most common. Cases also come in many colors mainly for user preference. The most important component for a bare bones PC is the motherboard, a printed circuit board where the processing components are connected. The motherboard itself is just a piece of fiberglass. It's actually the hardware mounted on it that does all the work in the computer. The motherboard connects directly or indirectly to every other part of the computer. IT is the "heart" of your PC. It handles the CPU and all system memory. It accepts expansion devices such as sound and network cards, and modems. Without the motherboard everything is useless. The motherboard receives its power from the power supply. The power supply is the metal box usually found in a corner of the case. The power supply is visible from the back of many systems because it contains the power-cord receptacle and the cooling fan. This is what tells the PC to turn on or off. The cooling fan that is found at the power supply is used for cooling purposes. It draws cooler air into the case from the outside, expels warm air from inside, or moves air across a heatsink to cool a particular...

Motherboards and Busses

...logic motherboards and busses week 4 Tuesday class 10-8-2013 unit 4 The title of the videos I watched were: An overview of motherboard types and also the video motherboard expansion slots and bus speeds. The two videos covered expansion slots the setup of a motherboard as well as bus speeds. The types of typical motherboards are standard atx and micro atx there is also mini itx nano itx and pico itx these last three are smaller to fit in smaller computers. They are mainly the same having similar power as well as similar mounting but have less expansion slots then the atx versions. Atx stands for Advanced technology extended and was standerized by intel in 1995 and can added and removed as needed. Atx boards are powered by a 20 or 24 pin connector. There are over 40 different types of motherboards but these are the most common now days. Expansion gets its on clock one MHz is equal to one million cycles per second one GHz is 1000 MHz. clock speed does not necessarily equal transfer rate. Throughput varies by bus verions 133 MB/s is 32 bit at 33MHz 266 MB/s is 32 bit at 66MHz or 64 bit at 33MHz and 533 MB/s is 64 bit at 66 MHz. These videos taught me a lot as I did not know any of this info. The videos taught me that although the cpu does most of the processing the motherboard handls thing such as memory espansion slots for grap hics video and so forth. What I have found confusing is why do they make different motherboards that...
